- The God Machine was an alternative rock band active in the first half of the 1990s. Its members were all from San Diego, California, U.S., but they all lived and performed mainly in the United Kingdom and across Europe.
The band consisted of three members, Robin Proper-Sheppard (born Gary Sheppard) (guitar/vocals), Jimmy Fernandez (bass) and Ronald Austin (drums), and they first performed officially under the name The God Machine in 1991. They released an EP, Purity with the record label Eve, and were later given contracts with the label Fiction.
They released two albums in their career, both with their trademark dark and industrial-sounding alternative rock, before Jimmy Fernandez suddenly died from a cancerous brain tumour. Robin went on to form The Flower Shop Recordings label, and bands Sophia and The May Queens.
Their second album, One Last Laugh in a Place of Dying, was recognized by Alternative Press as one of the "90 greatest albums of the 90s" in their December 1998 issue.
Their San Diego incarnation was called Society Line and also featured guitarist Albert Amman, who left the band before its move to London.

I am forever 14 with this song. Sitting with my headphones on, realising that pretty much everything I listened to didn;t really matter any more. 20 years later i'm still gazing into the distance. Best album ever for me.
What we need now is the deserved deluxe reissue of their 2 excellent albums...
I spoke with Robin (the singer) at a recent Sophia gig and he told me that it might finally happen soon (on vinyl at least).
Oh wow, that would be amazing. I have both albums on CD and would love to see deluxe versions being available. If only to introduce this amazing band to more people.
How amazing thus sounds❤
Saw them live back in 1993 or 1994 in belgium festivals ! was Epic , powerfull , intense and incredibly deeply felt within my core !
1993... Pukkelpop.
1993... Pukkelpop.
yes, they were the opening act back then, first band of a fantastic day...
dour
Tragic the demise of God Machine the best trio ever and to this day 2 of the finest albums recorded. Hardly ever off my turntable all these years later.
Jimmy Fernandez R.I.P:(
A masterpiece..
this is a great song.
great thanks. Love that band. 'Scenes' is my fave
I find Sophia to be more of the same genius, more of the same pain/darkness... just presented differently. I prefer God Machine to Sophia, and if I'm listening to Sophia I prefer it when it's not balladry and has more electricity to it... but I think it's all good. How God Machine never found a wider audience is beyond me, and I'm also puzzled about why Sophia isn't better known. Love all this stuff!
maybe Sophia was more accepted and didn't touch the right spot to many .. The God Machine is too much real for the commun mortal it will scare you and make you change .. and people don´t like that .. at least the majority this is not music for the masses for me they are more like prophets of life has many others you name it doesn't matter the musical gender in music all is said and taught
I´m almost 40 now i listen them since the 90´s still has it was the first day :)
This song rocks
Thank you this has been added to a playlist...

Sweet
Amen.
Reminds me of Prague.
Norway... don't know exactly where, but I expect this is the Hardangervidda plateau between Oslo and Bergen. Great video for a great song, although the train is moving a bit (...) faster than in real life
truly fucking awesome!!!
Fab
@freebirdrecords
Maybe so but it fits the rhythm of the music so good
What would the videos for Scenes be like?...
you're welcome
Who made this video?
Wasn't this footage first released as a show on Norway TV? I may be wrong but I think it got one of the highest viewer figures ever?
Yeah, 2009 actually! Was the first in a long row of similar minute-for-minute programs🤣.
@@MusicChristo This looks to be the train going from Sweden/Bjørnefjell to Narvik, perhaps?
I suspect it's actually out of the back of the train and is reversed. No headlights!
I hope not. 2minuts and 20 sekunds in the train pass a green light for go!
Anyone else find Sophia horribly underwhelming? But then again, how on earth do you follow this...
Nobody does.
