I got my Yaris Cross on tuesday, hussar for that - I love it. I think I have watched 15 reviews from australian to french over to dutch even though I do not speak the latter two languages. This review is the best, everybody else than you complains about the noice from the 3 cylinder hybrid engine, you do not - however you do point out that the wheel wells is somewhat noicy in which I agree. Also the automatic highbeam is much better that the normal Yaris (which I had before - no hybrid thoug), and the microphone via aple car play (phone conversation) is much better than the old Yaris - it must still stand the ultimate test where I call my mother, but that has not happened yet. Cudos!

Personally, I rather like that little throaty 'thrup' of the Yaris Cross engine on acceleration: it's hardly 'noisy', and lends the vehicle some welcome character. Having personally driven the thing (and now an owner), all this talk about engine noise is very misleading. Unless you like listening to classical music at low volume in the cabin while continuously pedalling the shit out of the vehicle, the 'noise' issue is completely moot. It's a pretty well refined/smooth (and largely quiet) driving experience.

Excellent review. The car works surprisingly well in plain Silver and gold. Red with black roof is also excellent. Avoid the claustrophobic dark roof lining - go for the light grey. This car is a no brainer - the only problem is the 6 month waiting time for delivery and it is expensive. But mpg is so impressive; it is worth the wait, it is worth the cost and it is even worth going for the 4wd version - you will get a remarkably versatile & practical vehicle that will handle slippery winter roads. The corolla cross is larger and may come to the UK next year but I sense the Yaris cross is really spot-on for the British market. Just a matter of joining the queue for one.

Excellent review. I am considering this as a replacement for my ageing Honda Jazz, but I think I prefer the new Jazz Mk4 (also hybrid). As you say, the hybrid drive is excellent.

I have tested this car too. The most complete version. The weakest point is the engine. Starting 60 km/h and higher it makes noise during the acceleration. It must be a stronger engine for this car weight.
Yes, I found it very noisy and a bit rough, but then I’m not really a fan of three cylinder engines.

You're right , but plug in option or pure EV would raise the price.
When the UK get the Charging Infrastructure right it will be time for a Toyota EV’
Right now I have just bought the Yaris Cross Hybrid ‘Excel’ as it seems an excellent
SUV and the test drive was perfect
I can wait for my Excel Model to arrive on March the 1st 👍 🇬🇧

street full of EVs all with home chargers is impossible to maintain ‘
unfortunately by the time they stop kicking that Can ‘ down the road ! Most people will have purchased a Hybrid Car Fact …..
EV’s still in their infancy, long way to go yet. It’s no fun running out of charge and the car being put on a low loader to the nearest charging point. Toyota has got this correct hybrids at the moment are the best option.

what do you say about climbing hills , does the engine exert itself too much that the noise is annoying ? Can it maintain highway speeds even on hilly terrain ?
Hi, first of all this is the fourth generation of hybrid drive after another modification . Toyota did great job and you don't have to be worried about noise which we known from previous generation, btw even I don't have this noise in my second generation of Prius , driving hybrid you need to catch some experience after that you will drive in the silence

I have just ordered one of these but my greatest reservation is that it does not have a sat nav. You are supposed to plug in a phone. I dont use a smart phone. So, I now lose sat nav now. It wont work with my Garmin.

@@AutoStartTest Apparently not. You have to use a smart phone and connect to google maps or whatever. I don't have a smart phone, so I wont be able to have a sat nav. Thats what the dealer told me when I ordered the new car yesterday. That now goes for all Toyota, not just the Yaris Cross.

How is the engine sound not annoying?? Don't get me wrong, the car is great... but the sound isolation is terrible.
The noise is coming from the transmission not from the engine. BTW with some driving experience this sounds will disappear.

Sorry but that brown interior is horrible, also can’t believe it only has one usb socket, a lot of cheap feeling plastics, some poor interior design and the specifications on the trim models is annoying.
It's a all French. Don't knock it till you've tried it. Once you've tried French you don't go back
