HOW TO DRIVE A ROUNDABOUT

  • A roundabout is a circular intersection where drivers travel counterclockwise around a center island. There are no stop signs in a modern roundabout. Drivers yield at entry to traffic in the roundabout; then enter the circulatory carriageway and exit at their desired street. Roundabouts decrease severe injury and fatality collisions and can enable drivers to get through intersections more quickly.

    I have never seen a spiral roundabout. It makes infinitely more sense than the normal one. Multilane roundabouts are very dangerous, most drives encounter them once or twice a year and have no clue what to do.

    But wait a second - how come your roundabouts lanes are laid out in a spiral instead of concentric rings? This makes it so much easier to distinguish when and where you're supposed to drive

  • @MrSaemichlaus

    Innermost and outermost lanes should be preferred because they clearly indicate your intention to other traffic. The middle lane should be used when there is lots of traffic in the other lanes (possibly queuing up before the roundabout) or before exiting the roundabout. The outermost lane should not be preferred when you stay in the roundabout, because entering traffic won't be sure where you're going (indicators are not always trustworthy). Whatever you do, go at your own pace, don't do things you haven't thought about first.

    •  Рік тому

      Look at the video again - this is a turbo roundabout with spiraling lane design. You automatically change lanes as you progress down the roundabout, and direction of travel is predetermined on entrance. On this roundabout, going round in the rightmost lane requires lane change to the left after every exit, as the rightmost lane always leads towards the nearest exit.

    one little correction. Left turns can perfectly and more efectibly be done using the left lanes (that is why they are there) including exiting to the external left lane. It makes the roundabout much more efficient, all lanes are used, and due to the correct use of lanes plus the rights of way it is all much safer and fluent. There is a video in UA-cam from Kenia that explain it correctly, and many more from arround the world. just do not see the Spanish ones...please.

    •  Рік тому

      From the video I saw, the intention is that you drive in a spiraling motion when on a 2+ lane roundabout. This is a good technique, as well!
      (as in, for left turn, enter innermost lane, then change lanes after each exit to indicate proximity to where you will get off)
      Spain is building a lot of new roads, so it makes sense that they try to futureproof their driver education. I just drove there a week ago, was awesome.

    • @afd3206
      @afd3206 Рік тому

      @ spain is caos if we talk about roubdabouts and nowadays many other things. But no, in Spain you find yourself all the time with driver cutting off your exit driving them on the outer lane, plus if you crash with them is your fault (that is the number one cause of accidentes in roundabouts in spain) and it happens because driving schools teach that it is correct to do so, when acctually it is what causes the crash.

    •  Рік тому

    I do not see why this is so confusing. Right lane entering must make an immediate right turn, middle lane can make a right turn or go straight or make a left, and the left lane entering the circle can make a left turn or a full u-turn. If you follow these rules you can't hit anyone because you are never making a lane change after choosing a lane while entering the darn circle. This idea keeps traffic flowing and only in America do we struggle with it.

    The turbo roundabout is an intersection model introduced in the mid 90s in europe.

    1:22 this car is unnecessary blocking the ones who are about to enter roundabout, he should drive in middle lane and change lane only after driving past last entrance. And no, entering cars won't interfere because either they will accelerate out of the way or will enter too slowly so won't interfere when changing line.

    •  Рік тому

      You don't take an exit from inner lanes on turbo roundabout. The whole idea of making the lanes spiral is so that you can carry higher speed while on it, so the cars entering WILL pose a risk, hence why you must close off the lane and they must yield properly (without inching forward).
      If you change lane immediately after the last entrance before your own exit you are cutting off anyone who just got unto the roundabout under the premise that you let them in. If the roundabout is large enough you might just have enough space, sure, but this is not a good idea for the reason I mentioned above.

    • @otofoto
      @otofoto Рік тому

      @ As I said you won't cut anyone if he is accelerating fast then brake and go behind, if he is slow to accelerate then cut him as you go faster and no interference.

    •  Рік тому

      @@otofoto That's a lot of guesswork for something as simple as a roundabout entry and exit. I suggest you check out defensive driving style and space management. This roundabout is designed with that driving style in mind.
      If any driver has to make evasive action (brake, accelerate, steer) to avoid a possible collision, that's hindrance. What you just described is setting yourself and another car for trouble, all with intent to let him in three seconds sooner. If he accelerates hard and you must brake behind him, then he failed to yield. If he enters slowly and you cut him, then you cut him off, which is also hindrance (failure to safely change lanes).
      Cars that have to yield will have to yield, that's just that, they must enter when there is enough space for them to build speed. Don't "let people in" when there's no congestion or zipper merge, just go about your way.

    • @otofoto
      @otofoto Рік тому

      @ Relax it is not as complicated as it sounds. But yes roundabouts train spatial awarness so require practice. That is main reason why US are slow adaptors.

    •  Рік тому

      @@otofoto It's not about complication, it's about necessity and risk. Turbo roundabouts carry higher speed, so your suggestion of letting people in is simply unnecessarily dangerous, when you can just exit at a steady speed and they will enter without having to think about you.
      The difference between standard circular roundabout and turbo is that you don't need to screw around and can simply enter the correct lane for the exit you'll take.

  • @RichardMasoner
    @RichardMasoner 8 років тому +2

    Modern roundabouts in general can get a lot of traffic through a busy intersection, but this one with low-radii entry & exits, wide medians and absolutely no provision for pedestrians needs to be fixed before it's built if Qatar plans to put this in the residential neighborhood suggested in this animation.

    •  Рік тому

      A roundabout is all about keeping traffic flowing, and you suggest adding pedestrians?
      Also, what made you think this is residential? Do you frequently see a road with more than 2 lanes traveling in the same direction in residential zone?

    • @etou1146
      @etou1146 Рік тому

      @ Traffic obviously includes all forms of traffic, be it motorized, on foot or on bike. The animation clearly shows residential buildings and parks across the top and bottom street, which means that the roundabout lacks distinct and necessary features for non-motorized traffic.

    • @MrSaemichlaus
      @MrSaemichlaus 6 років тому

      I'd take the 3rd lane to make a U-turn to prevent exactly that. The 1st and 3rd lanes should be preferred over the middle lane. The middle lane should be used in a high traffic density situation, where your decision to take the center lane would most likely occour before the roundabout where it's about reducing the length of the queues and saving your own time.

    •  Рік тому

      Since both of you need to cross your paths (you need to go left, he needs to go right), you have to coordinate a lane switch, just like on highway where there's sometimes a merge and exit lane at the same time. Indicate, equalize speed, give a bit of room, and dance with the other car.

      This is a turbo roundabout, it's a safer and faster design than the standard circle.
      The first problem with standard circle rounabout is that you don't know where any car will go, unless it is indicating right in the rightmost lane.
      The second problem is the "slingshot maneuver" where people go straight on a rounabout by entering immediately into the inner lane and then exiting from it, this cuts off everyone in the outer lanes.
      On a turbo roundabout, both problems are solved - you enter the lane which will carry you to your exit, and you know by looking at the lane any car is in which exit it will take, unless it made a mistake and needs to change, for which it will turn on its left signal!
