Great review! I finally got my grand Highlander platinum hybrid max after about a 6 month wait. It's awesome and I can tell you one thing, I won't be driving it up the side of a mountain after paying almost $70k 🙂
Great stuff as always! I’m pretty sure the new Land Cruiser will use the same max hybrid system but with the torsen full-time 4wd drivetrain. I wonder if that will experience overheating issues due to the hybrid powerplant …
TLDW, No it isn't good offroad. If one wheel is slipping, the powertrain controls are not capable of putting down much of any power......and the hybrid system overheats quite quickly.
It is not entirely fault of the car but you really need better tires that can bite onto gravel and dirt. Those tires are meant for cruising comfortably on pavement.
I’m watching this video bc I’m that 1% Lol! Coming from a 3rd gen 4R and a GX470 I off-road occasionally and now I have 3 toddlers and in the market for a more efficient 3 row SUV that can still take the family disperse camping or to play in the snow.
I think it is an excellent everyday light off roading suv and family hauler and reliable
Solid effort guys, well done!
Great episode, I bet this thing would be a rockstar in Canadian weather!

Is that in USD or CAD?

New Land cruiser can not possibly use the same hybrid system as other is fundamentally incompatible with 4wd drivetrain
The appropriate test is whether it can drive across a damp soccer field.
Oh good point. We are going to have to modify our CUV testing.
What about regular gas with awd!?
Need the Honda IVTM in a PHEV grand highlander and that would be the perfect vehicle
4Runner is waiting for the same power train

Who’s buying a GH for off-roading ?
Awesome test, well this HybridMax powertrain could certainly use some modifications & reinforcements from the factory
How?
The tires is everything.....

tires would have made a difference
I would like to see how it does with real off road tires.
Not good when only two will spin.
Leave traction control on ding bats. You only turn that off for wide open throttle events or stuck in snow. JFC.
Reduced abality and double to triple the price of a true limited slip differentials
I think the Honda Pilot is the best so far
I guess that’s a fail. Honda Pilot is still the best of the bunch.
99% of owners won't take this off road
Fact. 1% might, and we test them all if the marketing materials suggest it can. Plus we want imperial comparative data.

I am canceling my reservation after watching this video. Getting a used LX570 instead.
woow.. this vehicle is so stupid even with mild offroad challenge
