When i was in the business the foals used to get iodine on their umbilical cord. Is this not standard practice now?

I thought it was bad to pull them unless its emergency

You pull when she pushes. You're not eally pulling, just gently helping it out.
      I've helped with birthing.

Can I ask why the assistance if the presentation is normal? As far as I understand it the presence of the thorax in the birth canal stimulates breathing so there's no need to unnecessarily quicken that process?

Just because a head and feet are presented doesn’t mean you won’t get problems and even when you get the foal further out it’s important to keep going because the foal can get it’s hips caught

To assist. And there is muncus in the nostrils. Plus cut & disinfect the umbilical cord. You don't t just let the mare alone. Problems can occur.
I was there to make sure mine was OK. And she gave me a beautiful foal. A colt.
