How to work in K-pop industry as a foreigner: Ex-HYBE hiring manager

- K-pop is not all about singers ― there are countless unsung heroes working behind the scenes to produce and promote albums who dedicate their sweat and tears. And with K-pop sweeping the world off its feet, more people are craving to carry out such a mission at K-pop record labels that incubate and manage stars.
There is good news for them: music powerhouses here have ramped up hiring as they balloon in size. In the case of HYBE, home to phenomenal boy group BTS, the company currently has more than 60 job openings. In fact, the total number of its employees is 456 this year ― a leap from 73 in 2017.
With many companies expanding their businesses overseas, an increasing number of opportunities are now open to foreigners, says Lee Sang-hwan, co-founder and CEO of Conexus Lab, which was founded in 2019 to provide educational resources for those seeking jobs in the lucrative K-pop industry. Prior to establishing Conexus Lab with his partner Kim Sung-kuk, Lee worked in human resources in many companies ― including HYBE, CJ ENM and JTBC ― for more than a decade.

I think the power these companies have over you once you sign the contract is underestimated. With working with the most famous groups, it would seem like a very fun job but why would be so many people complaining about it? A big portion of this video is him addressing those complaints. Never mind him saying that the job is like normal production, the real thing here is that work its not 9-5 it’s basically 24/7 and the salary is low. Plus this is Korea, labor laws are different. All in all, it sounds like a pretty bad deal.
Funny how he talks about salaries in the industry being low, and “if you wait a few years, you’ll get a raise.” 🤦🏻♀️ The problem is still there: companies should appreciate their new hires and young talents more. Instead, they’re asking for patience and loyalty. 🙄 Come on, if these young professionals cannot have a decent wage now that the industry is booming, and the top executives are getting rich, when will they? Ridiculous!
@btsbloopbloop It’s not like the work culture in Korea, duh! If you knew the strict hierarchy that rules all aspects of life, from society to family, all relationships, and work environment, you would have understood what I meant with my comment.
I totally agree
that's how korean boss are 😂😂😂

Imagine working for one of the big 4 and living in downtown Seoul. Thatd be so cool
low wages and mad hours. Sounds cool bruv
@@imjk11 haha sign me up

@@KM-ne1ft the big 4 kpop labels
Isn't it Big3? lol
Sometimes I dream about working in Seoul. Other times, I think how terrible it would be considering how strict the work environment is and my lack of focus and if I have ADHD😅
A point to consider- when they say foreigners, they really mean people from other Asian countries...
Actually they do hire foreigners from non-East Asia , particularly from America but I think it's mostly choreograpers and music producer.
Ohh so all East & south Asians have a high chance or everyone that’s able to fluently speak Korean
That's not entirely true, as they need people with linguistic and cultural ability in many of the larger markets, including those outside Asia.
They prefer people who are Korean over others, that's true but it's not like they don't hire other foreigners but even so the scope of jobs are very limited for foreign applicants. Even the foreigners who are hired are chosen after rigourous process and after all that hardwork you'll realise you're paid less than the average salary other people get in Korea (this is not because you're a foreigner but most employees working in entertainment labels are paid less compared to other industries)
I mean like if any Indian or Indonesian idol comes, it's like a really big deal
But I think it is a Lil great too
Because most companies use some plastic surgery on trainees ( only taking bout them)
And if they have an almost different face structure it'll be hard to " modify their face"
Like take Oli london for example ( no hate)
This was such a helpful video.... I'm going to look at their course material right away!! Thank you thank you 🙏🏻

I want to do makeup, I an OBSESSED with makeup and anything with it really, I just need to get the stuff, learn a makeup trend in South Korea and be able to do it, sadly the thing abt not getting payed well is a problem, I'll be a foreigner, I'm already one cuz I'm not from the USA! And my family is already poor here, I need loads of money, or enough money for me to get a big house, and if they are complaining, Maybe I will at some point, idc if its hard, Cuz I live doing work or anything that makes me feel important, but not getting payed enough while working in such companies is absurd n
yeah true, but u better not give up mate , give me updates when u can
same here! i wanna be a kpop stylist so much, let's work hard together and see u soon in Korea!
Hybe is my inspiration to work hard and achieve my dreams
I like hybe too that much that I want to work with hybe too but seeing him say that the salary is low disappoints me. I want to live in Korea but with a RICH PAY and HIGH STANDARD OF LIVINGS. I like this field of work but I don’t want a bad pay.
Maybe I should search something else.
@@asmiivarshney3380 In S Korea, most jobs don't pay well, the work life balance is all over the place, you're owned by the company and at their mercy, you're also supposed to please your superiors because of the hierarchy. Women also get treated differently as they're often considered as liability as pregnancies and so. Workplace harassment is a thing but many people don't get to complain because that'll affect their work life. We being a foreigner also causes issues as they think we don't understand the culture and as most men in Korea has been through military the ones who have done their services definitely get along more, you being from the same university or school as your colleagues or higher ups definitely help and yes you should be good looking as well
@@Lian_kun thanks for the advice.
that hybe labels peru thing is a fanbase and just fan made account that seems to not even be in use now

is it possible as a foreigners who doesnt look asian to work as a stylists for. a kpop group?
That’s possible you dont have to be asain for being a kpop staff
but in your choice kpop stylist or makeup artist it doesn’t matter as long as you have talent
@@yourlocalgeniussssss Are you being fr? I always though they prefer East Asian staff?
You usually need to have a lot of experience and in some companies, be married.
When it comes to stylists, they usually look for married women
@@chee518 They prefer Korean staff because of cultural and language barriers but for stylists if you're already fluent in the language, good at your job then it doesn't matter problem tho is that you're paid very less for way too much work.
Hmm, I've had enough K-pop as it is but it's intriguing nonetheles...
I want to be a kpop training and I really need help
If you are here to be kpop trainee then its not ri8 place!!
I wonder what i need to be a bodyguard for an idol
You'd need to be accepted into the Bodyguard Association in Korea.
First get accepted into the association, you should have a license to be in the security industry, you'll also need a background from martial arts to add in your CV. Most bodyguards in Korea have atleast 2 martial arts degrees
@@Lian_kun In my limited experience with professional bodyguards in Korea, most of them are at least 3rd to 5th degree blackbelts, and even though TKD is the most common martial art in Korea, since it's really more of a sport, I found that Hapkido was a really common background.

Is there any chance to become k-pop idol at24or 25
Rn the idols in 5th gen are teens. Like 16 to 20, at least for big groups. But I do feel maybe some open minded company but the chances are slim. Also it is a risky move because if you put money on that and did not get to debut then that money is in the drain.
