I ended up switching to Control D last month since I got the deal for $40 for 5 years of Control D, and I absolutely enjoy it more than NextDNS, especially since it supports Hagezi’s TIF, and reasons such as how the folks at NextDNS seem to be fine with keeping a bunch of 2-4+ year old inactive filter lists while not listening to the community who want them to add Hagezi’s TIF filter list!
What "smart" phone would you recommend for someone who wants good camera and privacy? I get the impression it's hopeless comparing to desktop and even laptop PCs.
Phones are super personal preference, just make sure you know the pros and cons of whichever OS you’re on. If it helps I made a recent video breaking down iOS vs Android. If Android I really only enjoy pixels and fair phones to be frank 🤷 ua-cam.com/video/mzI0s7G6yJE/v-deo.html
@@techlore What about Android custom ROMs? What are the drawbacks, aside from being locked to narrow group of phones like Google Pixels? I've watched some of your previous videos, but they might be outdated now. As lifetime desktop user, I find it ridiculous that phones basically don't belong to their 'owners' and prevent from uninstalling some of preinstalled apps, and that's only tip of iceberg. New phones offer "AI" features, which almost certainly just send stuff to "the Cloud", making the whole situation worse than ever before.
What's the point of recommending *Ente Auth* if you also recommend a password manager? Surely any reputable password manager that tracks a login and password for an account is going to also let you generate the next TOTP code associated with it? It sounds very tedious to me to have to enter login+password from one app, and the code from a different app. The password manager I use will fill all 3 fields if you activate it on a login form (username + password + TOTP code), and I can't imagine using a password manager that doesn't even do that.
Ha, we actually get some debates over this on our forum :) I don't think either option is *wrong* and if you're using a reputable password manager with unique passwords with TOTP inside the same app you're not really missing out on anything substantial. *BUT* just out of principal the concept of 2FA is to introduce something you 'have' in combination with something you *know*. Keeping them in a different place (especially if one is offline entirely) adds an additional step of security, but not one that's likely to ever make a real impact. For me I've always kept them separate and it feels weird to keep all credentials for every account in the same place and it feels too centralized to my liking. That + the principal of keeping them different things is why I use them. However, unless you have a crazy sophisticated threat this is unlikely to ever be the reason an account of yours wasn't broken in to. The most likely scenario is a password gets breached, and having 2FA in your password manager will still prevent that scenario. So yeah, keep rocking it! No correct answer here as long as you understand the pros/cons of your workflow!
I have one question about aliases: if i get to proton plus, with my own domain and only want to use aliases for privacy, but some platforme doesnt accept it as registration, what should i do?
I’ve been using Wipr since it came out on iOS and MacOS for years! I always get 100% on Adblock tester on safari when using Wipr alone, but I recently got the AdGuard Premium Lifetime deal on stacksocial this summer and just like how I can add custom filters and blocklists (e.g. Hagezi, OISD, TIF, etc.) on AdGuard Premium. I still have Wipr installed on both iOS and MacOS just because it’s so small and efficient (less than 3mb) :)
Brave is just a bloated mess. Firefox can be configured to be much more secure and does not feed into the chromium monopoly in the browser market. Loved the video btw
Of all the chromium based browsers, Brave is probably the best. Always good to have a chromium based browser on hand for certain things. I needed one recently for Wootility (to configue my Wooting 80HE keyboard), cause Firefox hasn't implemented WebUSB
I can’t use Firefox as my main browser because Firefox on iOS still doesn’t support any adblocking filters nor custom filter lists, so even though I have a custom DNS service configured with Hagezi Ultimate, OISD Full, and TIF, it doesn’t completely get rid of the cosmetic ads that uBO and browsers such as Vivaldi, Brave, and Safari support on iOS. I don’t know why Firefox for iOS won’t even add a default adblocking filters list or custom filter lists; practically every other iOS browser supports filter lists, so why can’t Firefox? There’s even this browser made by Kagi Search called Orion browser for iOS and MacOS, that actually supports installing full-on Firefox and Chrome extensions, including uBO. I know that Firefox on Android supports extensions such as uBO, but after trying Android on various high end devices over the last decade, I still don’t like Android and won’t switch to it.
How would you harden the proton ecosystem? Its esentially emails, passwords, totps, and recovery codes in one place. How do you mitigate this risk. Any suggestions please :)
