This song is NOT about acid. Its about how music can move you. "I like to dream right between the sound machine. On a cloud of sound I drift in the night. Any place it goes is right. Goes far, flies near to the stars away from here." He's talking about letting music play while he's sleeping and letting the sounds of the music guide his dreams.
Well, when I was a kid in the 70's, we referred to this kind of music as "acid rock." Psychedelic rock was intended to enhance the meditative or drifting experience of those on a "trip" with or without the acid.

Back when “ hi-fi” was a new and shiny thing hi fi speakers where the thing to have, everyone can hopefully relate to either a home or car system that rocks

The singer John Kay's real name is Joachim Krauledat and he was born in Germany and came to Canada through his mother's marriage to a Canadian. The piece is quite psychedelic but Kay was always a big opponent of drugs and even wrote an anti-drug song "Snowblind Friend" for Steppenwolf. “The Pusher” by Steppenwolf is also a song against hard drugs.

Magic Carpet Ride was released in 1968 and was a favorite of soldiers in the midst of the Vietnam war. The war was so brutal that soldiers used music, weed, LSD, and recklessness to cope with their existence. Magic Carpet Ride was featured in the 1979 movie "Apocaplypse Now" and the scene where it is playing in the background while soldiers in a PBR rushing down the Mekong River river being shot at and shooting Viet Cong will make you feel what the song was about. This song is not just a song - it is an expression of the multifaceted 60s experience.
Combat vet here; LSD was pretty hard to come by in the country. The guys abusing drugs were using grass, heroin or opium. This song is about the joy of music and really has nothing to do with combat in Vietnam. Incidentally, “Magic Carpet Ride,” doesn’t appear at all in the film ‘Apocalypse Now.”

Steppenwolf and Iron Butterfly are credited with ushering in the words and music that is heavy metal. Lines from Steppenwolf's song Born To Be Wild "I like smoking lightening, heavy metal thunder"... were key to the new term. If I remember right I read that in a Guitar World magazine back in the day.
