  • Welcome back to my taxidermy series!
    In this video we mount the red fox skin that we tanned in the previous video.
    We go through form preparation, sewing, hide paste options (I used DAP latex chaulk with silicone), pinning, drying, sculpting with Critter Clay, eye positioning, lip tucking, blow drying, washing the mount with shampoo and conditioner, reference usage, airbrushing, covering slippage and detailing with Mod Podge for the wet eye and nose look.
    Manikin, earliners, eyes and Critter Clay purchased from Van Dyke's/McKenzie Taxidermy Supplies. A lot of tools, such as latex chaulk, rasps, and sculpting tools, can be purchased from crafting or home improvement retailers.

    What an interesting video, I grew up in east Texas where everyone has a few dozen deer heads and bass and catfish mounted on every available surface to show off their relative prowess at hunting, my uncle even had a couple of menacing looking bobcats that did a great job at keeping kids out of his office, but i'd never given a thought to the mounting process itself. Very impressive work, your fearless curiosity and wide ranging creative talents along with your unflappable no nonsense delivery makes this my new favorite channel!

    I've never done taxidermy, but I've had fur coats and stuff. To freshen the fur without washing, I used dry shampoo/mousse and it worked really well. The fur was still soft and fluffy

    Please do more taxidermy videos! Your videos are the best and your voice is so soothing. Out of all the videos I watched, none compares to yours. Going to mount my first ever red fox next week following your video 😆 Any plans on what your next animal will be?

    Great video and well done - that Fox looks very impressive and I would like to try this myself. Where did you get the zipper type knife for splitting down its back. Also, the wood base oval please? well done.....

      @lacrymastory  Рік тому

      Thank you! Look for skinning or gutting knives, some of them come with a hook like that. That specific oval base was just a wooden plaque I ordered from Amazon. I have another video where I painted it and added the rock base and moss if you want to check it out!

    If that's your first fox (maybe you said it at the start but it's 12 am here and had it muted lol) that's fantastic. Ears are a pain I agree, imo it's not worth the extra trouble of painting the insides of them if you're a beginner. Difference it makes is negligible- that is for Irish foxes anyway, not sure about the ones you have across the pond, maybe they've pinker ears! Also avoid the temptation to put too much clay either side of the nose as this is the main culprit for the 'cartoon' look! Not necessary to put caulk on every inch of the form however it's actually really handy for moving skin around. It slides smoothly around like on a living animal and stays put wherever you taxi it. Before sewing your main incision up just squeeze some caulk down into the legs and spread it by feel after. Obviously legs sewn up beforehand.
    If you really want to get good at taxidermy and have the time you may consider having a go at wrapping your own bodies? Teaches you a heck of a lot about anatomy and how the animal works. Best of luck in future projects!

      Thank you for the tips! This was indeed my first fox and I have received a lot of improvement suggestions which I try to keep in mind next time I work on a fox again. I just finished two squirrels with wrapped wood wool bodies and sculpted foam skulls and they turned out better than any of my previous mounts. Wrapping was definitely educational!

      @CC-gl2pn Рік тому

      @@lacrymastory great well done! yeah takes twice the time as foam but worth it. So much technology in taxidermy available in last few decades, but some of the most incredible historic taxidermy was wrapped! Like every art its the skill of the individual rather than the tools/ materials used. Keep at it!

    • @lacrymastory
      @lacrymastory  Рік тому

      Thank you! I agree, the forms are expensive and the shipping costs too. For that reason I have recently tried to wrap my own forms from wood wool (excelsior). I would still suggest starting with a foam form because wrapping is difficult, haha. Squirrel forms are usually around $20-$30 and they are easy to mount in case you get a chance to work with one!
