Appreciate the vulnerability in this and have gone through similar things and came to the same conclusion. Collecting is beautiful and complicated and evolves.
Here's the way I look at it - 100 really great Jazz albums could offer lifetimes listening, because the music is infinitely deep and just keeps revealing more with every listen. That would be a great core collection. From there, really I'm following my curiosity when I add, and I'm totally agnostic on if that's an early pressing or a high-quality recent re-issue.
Rich, I appreciate your perspectives and change of psyche. Your journey is inspiring. New to the channel and your research, learning a lot from you, thank you. God bless
You shouldn't lose money if reselling and may even make a nice chunk. I only collect cds but go deep in jazz and soul. I'm 40K titles deep and am shocked that the standard has changed back to vinyl. I think UA-cam, Instagram, and social media in general have led to the uptick because it looks much cooler to show something that is 12 inches than 5 inches. Don't compare yourself to others especially regarding your taste.
Dude, props to you for putting yourself out there on UA-cam. I'm taking that as an invite to perhaps comment and help you overcome this issue. I say you have an issue because somewhere in there your wires got crossed up on what the most important thing of collecting music is. It's the music itself! Not the pressing, rarity. cost, etc. You said you can put on a record from these legendary jazz artists and somehow come up dissapointed? But it's not based on you didn't like the music itself, it's based on how much you spent for the record, and the fact that any little pop or tick makes you regret spending so much money? That's tough man, because music has the opposite effect for me. I came home from work yesterday feeling terrible about the work day I had. I put on music, and it snapped me out of the funk I was in and brought me back to where I needed to be. That's what music should be doing for you. I hope you can find that again.
Thanks for the thoughtful comment. I have found that the majority of collectors have a tendency to get caught up in the materialism of collecting from time to time, and in the process we take a step away from giving the music the attention it deserves. If that never happens to you, consider yourself fortunate. I appreciate your sympathy, but to be clear, I'm not looking for sympathy here. My challenges with collecting have not made it impossible for me to enjoy music, and I get comfort and joy from music the same way you do.
@@dgmono I'm glad you took the time to respond, and took my comments the right way. I was concerned after I wrote it you might have taken it as an attack. I understand where you are coming from. I've been collecting things my whole life, and constantly have to remind myself not to let the process of collecting override the reason you love what it is you are collecting to begin with. I'm going to keep checking in on your videos on your journey.
@@dgmono Decades ago people were satisfied with the current pressing. The OG fetish is a bit of a new phenomenon. People use to use equalizers but that device got run out of town because of someone's opinion in stereophile. Thirty years ago people were taking record collections in solid shape and throwing them out. Almost everybody loved cds but now they're in the same dumpster as the equalizer.
When you see those giant collections of top shelf jazz OGs I’d wager most all of those are full of crackle and pops too. Most of those guys just want the LP and jacket for the collection. I bet both of us would be annoyed with those too. Lol. My budget on any used LP is about 50 bucks.. I’ve been so disappointed with collectable OGs that I no longer even seek them out unless one falls in my lap and unless I can hear it first I will not buy it.. there are a couple exceptions but basically I have to hear it first. Also- with all of the awesome BN Classics/TPs, APs, Acoustic Sounds Series, Speakers Corner, Craft, etc etc, I’ll gladly take those - over a high priced OG in similar NM condition - how much is a NM Miles Davis Smokin OG cost? Or Jutta Hipp Zoot Sims OG in NM shape?? Too much for me! Yeah I could buy a “Good” rated copy, but the listening experience will be terrible. The brand new quality remasters on the aweome vinyl, w/ pro mastering, and packaging, it’s too good a deal. Another huge bonus is being able to get a new copy so easily if the LP has non-fill, or scratches, and warps. Through Amazon, Ive done a replacement or two and the process incredibly easy I had Acoustic Sounds send me FOUR REPLACEMENTS of KOB UHQR before the final one was ok. Thats pretty awesome. They were great to deal with. So yeah.. I’m done with used OG collectable jazz.. tooooo frustrating. Very good video btw
I've been trying to keep my distance from the hard core collecting community, it's the same no matter what you collect, a bunch of people with endless amounts of cash posting their stuff online and I'm just not in that league. In the past few years I've been slowly moving over to the audiophile reissues that are coming out which I enjoy listening more than an ultra expensive original and I like the people more that collect those. I also spend lots of time outdoors hiking and bicycling so my listening time has gone down but I'm much happier.
@@LagunaRider1961 Some have deep wallets but many bust it for the few they don't have to complete their collection. I do that with cds all the time. You go after the core titles in the catalog and then branch out into the non-peak periods, early stuff before fame, and imported or live recordings. Very cool. Hope to see more videos. I'm almost always more happy with the sound quality of a newly pressed record that is remastered from the original tapes. These too become collectible and expensive. I've resigned myself to finding cheap records and 78's at flea markets, etc. and hoping that i find a few gems among them, while being a bit pickier with what I end up buying. But I also feel that when a record is worth a lot, I'm more critical of it and then I have more of an urge to just sell it. What's the saying "you should never meet your heroes"...
Thanks for sharing. Very honest video. Appreciate that. Many good points made. Glad to hear you found a good balance and are in a good space with the hobby. I look forward to the next one. Peace - Kieran
Great video Rich! I love my MMJ of Candy...but I know the critique or angst of investing in an OG was real for you! This hobby should be fulfilling not stressful. Great insight from you on this.
I have the Disk Union DBLP mastered by KG from the original full-track master tape. It's my go-to copy :) I actually had the mono MM 45 at one point and remember it being equally good. Did you get the 45 mono or 33 stereo?
Hey Rich! nice to see you posting video blogs! (We've chatted on SHF). I'm right there with you, record collecting has to be fun, and give us enjoyment, not be a source of stress and regret. I think different people will find their own path, but this is a valuable topic to discuss. We should all be keeping in mind, is this still fun? For me it's the limited editions that have been getting hard to grab, and i feel like letting go. I know what criteria i'm focused on with my collection, and need to stick to it.
Refreshing take on collecting. Thank you for sharing.

Some of that stuff was acquired when the titles were current and in print. They didn't pay collector's prices just yesterday for all their stuff.

The best part of collecting is buying expensive stuff and instantly regretting it. That’s life in general though 🤡
