- Delve into the dramatic story of Canadair's super-executive jet, the "greatest idea ever built with Canadian dollars." A totally new type of aircraft-faster, cheaper to fly, and more comfortable than any other business jet-was ready to compete with its American counterparts. But would it make it off the drawing board and into the air? The film captures the spirit of the Canadian air transport industry at the height of its innovation and supremacy.
Directed by Stephen Low - 1980 | 57 min

Made back in the day when documentary producers gave viewers credit for having some brains. No infuriating camera work. No brainless narrator. Not one reference to weight by comparing to elephants or volume by comparing to olympic swimming pools or height by Eiffel towers. Love this.
I see what you did there lol.
Leave it to the National Film Board Of Canada to make such a fine documentary about a somewhat niche topic.
Im an American who has spent much time in BC and Ontario. Truly a wonderful country and people.
This is my idea of a perfect documentary.
Excellent film, all original footage. Having flown the Challenger more than 2,000 hours and counting, I can attest it is still a great airplane. A reliable workhorse of the VIP charter industry, with very good range. These people built something unique!
I worked in the engineering dept as a summer student in 1978 and 79. It was an amazing place.
Like many here I applaud everyone involved in this documentary. It is just simply brilliant . A proud time for Canadian Aviation.
Awesome documentary on what I consider to be one of the 10 best-designed airplanes ever. I've spent the last 15 years flying Challengers and they have earned a special place in my heart!
Flying the Challenger must be such a treat! 😀
What an EXCELLENT piece of history that was. Thank you so much for sharing it. Challenger is a Robust airplane. Very well built.
Amazing airplane and was very innovative for it's era...versatile, robust and reliable
I recognize the sound of those engines. Those are Avco Lycoming ALF502 geared turbofans, the very same ones used on the British Aerospace (BAe)146 feederliner.
I like the American marketing guy. He explains the concepts very convicingly. Video at around 18:00. Love the guy's accent too.
Me too. His is indeed a master of sales! I couldn't even imagine how these guys were able to sell a plane on paper. Without which there would be no funding to this beauty. Brilliant!
RiP Canadair...merci, great ride!
It's hard not to be romantic about an airplane. With all the trouble Canadair and Bombardier Dehav have given to the taxpayer,it sure is great to see the challenger, CRJ, dash8/Q and CS (A220) fly. Good for the gov of quebec to step up for the CS. I hope it pays off. Major assembly will remain in mirabel even when Mobile AL opens. Shout out to Cretien.
Canadair. Created an aircraft that the customers never really thought they needed...until they saw it.
I had two job interviews with Canadair in the early 80’s. The job would have been digitizing the Challenger’s engineering drawings. The day I was going to give my notice I got a call from personnel at Canadair saying there had been a sudden hiring freeze…don’t quit your present job! Never heard from them again. The aviation industry, especially in Canada, has always been boom and bust.
Please do this for the Global Express.
31:00 that minister of commerce sounds like the Green Red show.
CRJ- 200 is a close relative
Wonderful documentary, congratulations to all those involved.
I need some of those 16th century trumpeters at my next product launch….so tasteful!!
An excellent film.
Cannon in D fantastic
Chretien seemed very swayed by Lear. Surprising.
Its funny seeing Cretien so youngish!
Classic liberal. When they had class and balls. That's all been washed out now. Faded and limp.
Remember his response to Nardwar regarding the pepper spray of protesters "I don't know.. pepper?... I put it on my eggs" legend.
Good One well done
There's beauty
The CRJ 100
“Kearn” That name was on an important document, to this day, is still very confusing & no one could make since of it. I’m not familiar with that name nor Airplane’s.
The only Challenger I’m familiar with is Life & My 2015 RT Dodge Challenger which was totaled within 2 months in May 2017.
nice aircraft tail @ 36:24
😂
Hey, Chretien takes a big chance on the Canadair Challenger and craps all over the EH 101. This is 2020 and we still haven't fully replaced the old Sea King. What's all that about?
Seems they forgot to mention how one of those three test planes crashed into the Mojave Desert, killing one of the pilots.
+cyrex686 It happened to Gulfstream recently
***** Good point. Seemed like it was made later to me. Still, could have added a dedication at the end.
They don't mention the April 3, 1980 crash of a Challenger, in which one of the three crew died.
From 53:16 have hankies on standby.
How to test aircraft parts, throw them on the ground and stomp on them.
i thought they lost one to deep stall
they did ! due to a faulty AOA indicator on the test probe
I’ll admit, it is a sexy airplane. However, in my humble opinion, it handles like an old dump truck or an old pickup truck. Great documentary though.
Probably because it's a comparatively large body with small wings.
$600,000,000 worth of orders at launch for a $200,000,000 investment. That's not bad. It's just a shame that after all this Canadair and later Bombardier became wards of the state with a dismal financial record and massive government bailouts. I sighed in relief when Airbus acquired controlling stake in the company (50.01%).
Chalk boards, what the heck...? Oh, ok 1980
Not a Falcon
All those people working at that place with no safety glasses makes me just cringe
I like the old guy in the machine shop with a dart in his yapper. Just making some turnings...
it wasnt big enough
canadians said "if its so good an aircraft why arent americans building it first". canadians live and think inside a box. its not a country that prospers in major markets. most companies operating in canadian are american anyway. that speaks for itself
