The day beautiful and ocean calm
Several ships riding waves
To a family picnic, my friend, I bring
My best friend for all to see
"Mother, you haven't seen her in a while', I say with a smile
With a grand ocean view,
My friend, helpful, filling everyone's cup
"You're too close to the edge', we warn.
Smiling and conversing, we continue
But fate had other plans
Suddenly, my friend disappears
One foot follows the other
A fall, we could not stop
As I peer, I hear 'Get away from the edge!'
But I see my friend below, not moving
Darkness draws near as I close my eyes
I, too, am hospitalized
With my mother, aunt and sisters, I hear
'She may not survive the night'.
My best friend, I wish I could reach for her
As I lay immobile with a future uncertain
A sister near me, takes my hand
Asking, 'Are you alright?'
A hidden truth, no one tells
My friend is gone
'Wait for her to recover' I hear
Suspicious, I ask
'What's wrong?'
My mother shouts 'Don't say'
'Is she - gone?' I inquire
All heads down,
Silence answers as tears fall
I lost my friend, a part of my heart is gone
Author's note: In the chapter section in the science fiction source, the person who falls is an alien who is a friend of the human family. They are in her world when this happens. Since her consciousness persists after her physical death. Specialists could locate her and draw her back to a new body they created for her, so she continues to live.
