Hey, just found the podcast and had to backtrack from the loml one to see what you said on this one first.
-For me the opening is an environmental setting. The church bells that she could hear, the mist she was sailing trough with the fairy lights being the one hour of sunshine she references in fresh out the slammer. Kept calm and carried is a reference to a famous WW2 London poster (Keep Calm and Carry on) that was supposed to encourage people just to carry on what they were doing in case London got bombed. I think it paints the journey, the battle she went trough (in her mind) to try and make the relationship work.
-On the speculation 15:32 this coming from a man's pov. Joe has a career that could be hugely impacted by a break up and Taylor writing him into the ground. Maybe he wanted it to end but knew he could not end it and just decided to let it peter out until she gave up? Most people now see him as boring, bit brooding maybe a bit depressed but nothing to bad that would prevent him ever being in a movie again for fear of Swiftie riots outside of movie theaters when they wanted to show a movie that he was in.
-Two graves one gun fits in the whole verse for me. She ripped apart the relation that was kept together with stitches from how often it needed to be patched and killed both versions of London off, him and her home there. One action 2 linked outcomes because the next line is ill find someone. This is also why i do not like the murder suicide explanation myself. This verse continues the journey on from the first travel verse to deciding to end it.
-My favourite line is "And I'm just getting color back into my face"
-This song for me is the third in line of a trilogy: Exile, You're Loosing me and So Long London. That is why I do not see it as a really sad song but more of the finally taking the step to move on song. I think it's a fitting track 5 not for the immediate emotional impact like loml that was more of a stab in the back or the much more general How did it End but it was the slowly ripping apart and thinking about ending it over time that made it painful.
-It's my favourite track on the album.
