  • When we're running the LHC at CERN, muons from cosmic rays are pretty annoying and we have to remove their tracks from our data. But when the LHC is off, they become useful to us. Watch this short to find out how!

On a general point. I think CERN should have its own UA-cam. No matter what keywords I searched the only videos that came up are CERN apocalypse for Horse Man of Physics. Ancient gods and portals. Black holes and evil governments. It is nearly impossible to find a serious physic video with CERN in its title.

CERN does have its own UA-cam channel. It's here: ua-cam.com/users/cern
Unfortunately, you're right that there are many conspiracy videos that fill up the search results, so it's hard to find the genuine videos.

This short is taken from a live tour of the ATLAS Experiment cavern in March. I was joined by my colleague, Dylan van Arneman.

How do you cater for muon interference/noise on the detectors? Is it a pretty constant flow so you can account for it?

It isn't, unless you're stood right next to it when it's running. Which is one reason we put it 100m underground with lots of access restrictions. The collisions that we're doing are at much lower energies than particle collisions in nature, also we have a lot of fail safes in our equipment, so if it broke it would shut itself off.
