    In Africa we know the difference between yams and sweet potatoes because we grow them and they are grown differently. Sweet potatoes in a hip of soil and yams in a wetland. That confusion is American. Thanks for the video.

    My favorite is sweet potato pancakes. Use the white-fleshed Japanese kind (the orange kind makes wetter, flatter pancakes), separate eggs and beat the whites and yolks separately. Little salt and cinnamon and on the griddle... Piece of cake. I eat them almost every day!

    I literally eat about 10 sweet potatoes a week. as a new Vegetarian they are my staple foods... just pop them in the oven for an 1 and wait for them to cool, and eat the whole thing by itself. lol. I also enjoy them in the morning with oatmeal. :) nice information BTW

      Poke 5 holes in them and cover in a damp paper towel. Microwave for 5-8 minutes. They will come out great! We have these as a side to most of our meals. Super healthy and super inexpensive.

    A disproportionate number of the nutrients ARE in the skin, but not all, or even most. Still, it's totally worth eating the skins when possible. We occasionally drop bits of steamed sweet potato, skin and all, into our morning smoothies. They blend really well

    Sweet potatoes are a great food and so very cheap...many times a year, they cost around 49 cents per pound! I can usually buy them at the Farmer's Market here in FL at 3 for $1... NO waste either...the peel is VERY nutritious and has fiber and vitamins! I eat them all year round...I like them for breakfast too! Sprinkle some cinnamon & ground cloves on them for added antioxidants...no butter needed!

    Are all or most of the nutrients (vitamins, manganese, etc) in the skin like a regular potato is? It seems that every time I read an article on sweet potatoes they never mention whether or not the skin is included in the nutrition info. I know they add fiber but can you clear this up for me? Am I doing myself a disservice by removing the skins?

    Common misconception: Just because some has lots of nutrients does NOT mean the body can (fully) absorb them e.g. grains. A lot of people still believe that peanuts (which are NOT nuts by the way) or milk products are healthy.

    While we appreciate that you believe what you believe, we respectfully disagree with a lot of what you're saying. Yes, we're the only species to drink the milk of another species, and we think that's a little weird.
    That aside, in our research (and trust us, we do a ton of research) we've found you're right. That the countries with high milk consumption also have high rates of colon cancer, breast cancer and osteoporosis. But we also know that one thing doesn't cause the other.

    (pt 2) The countries with high milk consumption rates are also the countries that tend to have generally wealthier populations with more advanced medical care and diagnostics, so more people will be diagnosed with those diseases.
    No, milk is not all good, especially milk that's pumped full of hormones, but milk, as a whole, isn't the enemy. The body doesn't absorb ALL the calcium in milk, but it does absorb some of it (more than it absorbs from other sources). Still, folks shouldn't go nuts.

    Why are yams shown?

  • @watchsuperfoods
    @watchsuperfoods  11 років тому

    That's because peanuts and milk products (in moderation) are healthy. Peanut butter has good fats that the body actually needs, plus 2g of fiber per serving. Yogurt (milk product) contains gut friendly bacteria. Plus, milk products add valuable calcium to the diet. THe body definitely doesn't absorb all the nutrients in foods, but that's not a reason NOT to eat nutrient rich foods.

    21.5lbs would last me maybe 7-10 days - I am sitting in front of 3lbs of steamed sweet potatoes right now :-)
    BTW: Sweet potatoes AND potatoes are both very good for you. Actually, almost all (unrefined) carbs are good for you almost all the time. Just avoid all the fat and low quality (animal) protein that is usually served along with it and you have a fine meal!
    BTW2: Potatoes as a source of simple carbs??? That needs revising ;-)
