This is awesome, I wish we would have more "experience" games like this released here. Like ABZU, etc. Sometimes just exploring and wandering is all that's necessary.
I had no idea that this game had such a cult following. I played and finished this game around 2007 when you could convert PSX games to PSP executables. And I reached the ending around day 283, so this pretty much invalidates the authors theory that the ending is related to Japanese Hatsuyume. I reached the ending by filling all the RED dots on the dream matrix which you see after each dream sequence. And at around day 250, I actually had figured out how to roughly control where the dot lands on the dream matrix(in other words, I understood the underlying mechanics of the game logic), so from there it was a breeze to reach the ending which was a huge accomplishment for me at that time. So yeah, i’m very surprised to see that this game is still such a mystery in the gaming community and it’s too bad that at time I didn’t cared about the gaming community (I honestly still don’t do), because I definitely would have shared my findings on how the game actually works. If you think the acronym really isn't a reference to the drug, you've never done the drug. Giving those sorts of words as "what it stands for" is right in line with the LSD experience.
Is this the same F-Zero anime that made it to the states too? like, on the now defunct Saturday morning block "FoxBox" right? Wasn't this the same time as that Kirby show and Sonic X? F-Zero GP legend on Game boy advance had characters from the show in it and was essentially one giant episode for the show..
2:10 That's just weird. 4:26 That's what I found surprising. When I first heard about this in I believe 2014 I felt very sure it was a drug reference. Boy was I shocked to find out it wasn't XD
A couple corrections: It is intentionally named after the drug LSD. Here's a quote from an interview with him: "A big thing also was that I was able to release the game with the name LSD without a single complaint from anyone. At the time I thought that having that name LSD would catch people’s eye, like “Hey, what’s this now?” LSD goes back to that LSD, the one that was popular in hippie culture in San Francisco and so on, like what we all said the Beatles used. I was kind of shouting out to the psychedelic movement in a game. The psychedelic movement and PC culture were also pretty intertwined on the West Coast in the US." And the lack of localization was not Sato's choice, it was Sony's. Here's a quote from the same interview, just 2 lines down: "I had hoped to release LSD in the US, too, but that didn’t happen." To be fair, this interview occurred a year after this video was uploaded. However, I think it's a bit daft to think that the game wasn't named after the drug. Even the cover art for the game is clearly meant to be blotter art.
You realize the true reference to the drug is always obscured by other potential acronyms to keep things legal, wholesome, and a bit theatrical, right? ESPECIALLY in the cases of The Beatles' song and this game lol. Or maybe you're just playing along to keep the dream loose and sneaky yourself....
I played the heck out of this game on emulator. It was interesting for the first few hours, but after a while, it started feeling horribly repetitive. I mean, on VERY rare occasions I would still find something I hadn't seen before, but even that wasn't too interesting because I knew it would do the same thing as everything else: Touch me and send me to an area that I've seen a thousand times already (And usually with randomized textures that I'd seen before, too). It got to the point where the only thing keeping my interest were the occasional video dreams, and those are few and far between when you get late into the game (Not to mention a bunch of them are just text, which I can't read, which makes them useless to me). I mean, it was fun to find out what the ferris wheel did, and I was scared the first time I had the gargoyle attack me or had the weird looking tiki guy throw his head at me, among other things, but at this point, I feel like I've seen everything worth seeing. The goal of "Play through 365 dreams" was just not enough for me. I think I got to something like day 150-200 before I decided I was too bored to continue playing. But as this game has a bit of a cult following: Am I missing something? Because it just feels boring walking into things and finding the same things over and over again. Like, it's worn out its welcome. :p Maybe it's just not my type of game, or maybe most players DO get tired of it after a while?
I'm surprised he didn't mention that people thought Osamu Sato died for the longest time. It was only when someone saw his new instagram account that he resurfaced, waay after LSD's release
I remember in the early-mid 2000s this game used to be pretty obscure and there were always interesting discussions about it online that were kind of like talking about spooky urban legends in the 90s. Nowadays since every streamer and youtube has played this, this game is nothing more than a meme for people to make fake reactions over facecam to
The ones mentioned in this video. Specifically Eastern Mind: The Lost Souls of Tong-Nou. Can't speak for the sequel as much, but I watched a full LP of that one. All characters you find in the game are just a bunch of basic 3D shapes stuck together basically, but arranged in ways to make truly unique and bizarre creatures. It's a point and click adventure game if I remember right, so it's got a whole story and everything.
Chu(u)-Teng was considered lost until just a couple of years ago, but it's basically the same as Eastern Mind. I think some people were working on a translation, but I don't believe it's gotten anywhere.
W. Durrsly Huh, that's new. Last I checked they were still discussing how to output the text files, because they're all saved as images. I guess it's been about a year so it would be pretty far along now.

why do these dream games always perceive dreams as trippy and weird and logic breaking I mean my dreams are not that way dreams are just things you have seen or you know and your brain just uses some of those things randomly and makes a story out of it! I don't think these people had ever dreamed before
Had a dream last year that I was sent to North Korea as death penalty for hacking Trump’s twitter account. I made a game about it. It’s called Sly Devastator
Your personal life experiences =/= everyone elses. My dreams actually happen to be incredibly similar to what this game portrays. Stop thinking you're the center of the world. Your comment was so obnoxious to read.
I'm pretty late here, but there are some factual inaccuracies in this video. For one, the remixes in LSD & Remixes *are* the tracks in the game. The originals are nowhere to be found on the disc, as far as I'm aware, or at the very least aren't accessible in-game. On a similar note, Lucy in the Sky with Dynamites is definitely not the soundtrack to the game. A few other things in the video are debatable or "close enough." Interesting video for someone who's never heard of LSD; just don't take it as being 100% true.
I can tell you why it wasn't localized in america... News at 11... Does sony want your children to use LSD? one mother thinks so after her son purchased L.S.D. Dream Emulator on the PSN store... Mother: I just think its sick that children could be allowed to purchase a game which promotes drug use... what kind of sick individuals would make such a game to target CHILDREN. We reached out to Sony who delivered this statement "Were sorry, our intention was never to get kids hooked on drugs as such we have refunded anyone who purchased the game and since taken it down from our online store". That's why... because factual evidence isn't relevant to American News, Parents don't keep track of there kids and need others to blame, and companies have realized its easier to simply avoid the controversy all together and play it as "safe" as possible to avoid such controversy.
I was utterly fascinated with this game in my early yt days. One of the first LPs I had ever watched was of someone playing through LSD. I believe they said that the game was a mixture of a dream journal and someones recording of an LSD drug trip so im glad to know it was only half true.

Very impressed by the quality of content in these videos. Great job following up with the creator. I look forward to more of these.
Can you please do a video about F-Zero climax, F-Zero anime, F-Zero toys and F-Zero trading cards that where released ONLY IN JAPAN?
ShadowFalconPictures Unfortunately, the anime bombed in Japan worse than the fire emblem shin megami tensi game.
Or so I'm told.
ThePowerletsplays I know and the last episode was the only good episode in that F-Zero anime.
The anime bomb because they reveal Captain falcon's face and he was not manly enough. Also he dies.
GDKsan They also reveale Captain Falcon's face in F-Zero X.
Thanks for taking me on this little LSD trip, Region Locked.
2:10 That's just weird.
4:26 That's what I found surprising. When I first heard about this in I believe 2014 I felt very sure it was a drug reference. Boy was I shocked to find out it wasn't XD
A couple corrections: It is intentionally named after the drug LSD. Here's a quote from an interview with him:
"A big thing also was that I was able to release the game with the name LSD without a single complaint from anyone. The psychedelic movement and PC culture were also pretty intertwined on the West Coast in the US."
And the lack of localization was not Sato's choice, it was Sony's. Here's a quote from the same interview, just 2 lines down:
"I had hoped to release LSD in the US, too, but that didn’t happen."
To be fair, this interview occurred a year after this video was uploaded. However, I think it's a bit daft to think that the game wasn't named after the drug. Even the cover art for the game is clearly meant to be blotter art.
I thought this game was about acid
It is this is a terrible video
What? LSD was never directly referenced in the game
It doesn't have to be.
THIS IS COMPLETELY AN FUCKING AESTHETIC SIMULATOR ON PS1.
never heard of this ps1 game aaaannnddd... underrated.
06:22 I had that same dream once, with people hanging from light posts.
Wish more games like these would be present!
I literally have a board on my Pinterest titled: “LSD: Dream Emulator” and it’s an actual PS1 video game. That’s incredible
She had a "dream diary". So she had a yume nikki?
that's future diary man
@@AaronKaiMCDNLD Mirai Nikki means Future Diary, Yume Nikki means Dream Diary and is a Japanese RPG Maker game
dazz's pronunciation of cho aniki's name is majestic.
Keep doing Region Locked, it's really good
4:43 That thing scared the absolute hell out of me
YES! This continues to be one of my ABSOLUTE favorite games of all time. So glad to see a video on it.
I'll be keeping an eye out for this on my next trips to Book Off and Mandarake.
I wanna see a 2020 remade version of this that would be amazing
ikr? I'd really like to see something like that.. maybe the developers behind the revamped version of LSD will do something in the future. who knows
"talk about the game mechanics of LSD"
Well... I never thought that would be a sentence I'd hear.
OH SHIT LSD EMULATOR WAS SUCH A TRIP. good to see people remember it
I'm surprised he didn't mention that people thought Osamu Sato died for the longest time. It was only when someone saw his new instagram account that he resurfaced, waay after LSD's release
Okay dude you just spit out fire japanese with that game title. I'm impressed
I remember in the early-mid 2000s this game used to be pretty obscure and there were always interesting discussions about it online that were kind of like talking about spooky urban legends in the 90s. Nowadays since every streamer and youtube has played this, this game is nothing more than a meme for people to make fake reactions over facecam to
Please talk about the Japan exclusive *Godzilla: Kaijuu Daikessen* on the Super Nintendo sometime on region locked
"Unintentionally" Suuuuuuuuure.
Fun Fact: a pop alternative band alt-j used screenshots from this game for their album covers
Isn't it an emulation glitch that has the water be the cause for an epilepsy warning?
Yes, water shouldn't blink on real hardware or an accurate emulator.
@@indask8 I was wondering why it blinked in let's plays but not in my copy
Personally, I find Osamu Sato's previous games to be much more interesting.
What game would that be?
There's actually an almost-complete translation.
W. Durrsly
Huh, that's new. Last I checked they were still discussing how to output the text files, because they're all saved as images. I guess it's been about a year so it would be pretty far along now.
Also you might find that a lot of the acronyms used parallel the descriptions other people have given for LSD.
To clarify, this game wasn't meant to be a game, more so an interactive piece of art.
Lucy in the sky with diamonds wasint an unintentional name. Even Though the Beatles said it was during one interview.
Do Princess Crown on the Sega Saturn next!
Here's a link to FiggleWatt's blog which you can follow for updates and download links!
blog.figglewatts.co.uk/
There should be an update coming out soon which will include a level editor!
why do these dream games always perceive dreams as trippy and weird and logic breaking I mean my dreams are not that way dreams are just things you have seen or you know and your brain just uses some of those things randomly and makes a story out of it! I don't think these people had ever dreamed before
What I can remember of my dreams is usually pretty weird, but certainly not on this level.
Maybe if I watch enough footage of this game it'll happen.
1:13 Osamu "The Rock" Sato
I'm STIIIIIIIILL IN A SNAAAAAAKE, DREAM EATER!!!!!!!!
You need to talk about kao the kangaroo 3 which was exclusive in Poland and never got translated to the u.s
An hd remaster of this is needed
