Also a great idea to turn OFF memory compression after the upgrade. You do this in the control panel/Hardware and Power and reboot. 8GB is plenty of RAM so you no longer need to tie up CPU cycles with compressing and uncompressing items in RAM. You should retag this video with the 416Play as well to get more views. It is IDENTICAL inside.
Nearly 4 years later and still a super video. I just increased the RAM of my DS916+ by following your video and it worked like a charm. Thank you for this fantastic tutorial. I also followed the advice from WFP below to disable the memory compression in the settings. Hope that these two steps combined will give my Synology the performance boost I am hoping for.
Just purchased a secondhand DS916+. I followed your guide and successfully upgraded from 2GB to 8GB. I found I had to bend the steel bar slightly with a flat head screwdriver to unlock the plastic case. I cleaned all the dust out with a toothbrush and isopropyl alcohol, and it still runs, bonus!
Worked perfectly. I wasn't able to open the case - cut my fingers completely but then I asked my wife's help and she opened it in 2sec after watching your video. The rest of the update was a walk in the park. This memory update is really important these days since the introduction of the DSM7.0
Awesome guide. Just upgraded my DS416play from 1GB to 8GB. Disabled Memory Compression afterwards, since there’s no need to use CPU power to compress it when it now has plenty of RAM.
Excellent tutorial ! Managed to upgrade my DS916+ in about 10min. One thing to note is that on first power up the blue power light seemed to flash longer than normal, took about 5 mins to boot. Other information seems to point to the system checking the newly installed ram.
Almost Exactly the same as my DS416play, the differences made no real difference to there process and it worked like a charm. Memory usage down form 75% to 10 nd the response times from the NAS are significantly better. Thank you so much for this video.
Excellent - 20 minutes work and my ds416play is transformed. Getting the casing off was a little tricky but everything else was easy. The server was starting to become unusably slow but is much responsive now. I'd recommend this upgrade for any ds416play. Thank-you for the video.
This was really easy-- great instructions. More important is that 50€ of memory very dramatically improved performance. I can't get over the difference. Thanks so much.
Thanks man. Just followed your guide and everything was really clear. The only part i was strugling with a little bit was in the beginning where you have to pull the metal bar over the handles. That was a bit better explained in another video v=eHCf51AytLM. Anyway, big thumbs up!
Thanks so much. My DS416play is running so much better now...100% improve. I was suffering all this time. I didn't realize it was so easy. Appreciate it!!!
Great video, upgraded my 416play to 8GB of RAM as I had one lying around. Its way smoother now. It worked fine in DSM6 but DSM7 just slogged before upgrading.
Great video! Thank you! I had a bunch of Rams lying around. I decided to pop one of my 8GB RAM into my DS416, but it didn't work. Fans and disks were spinning, but the device wasn't booting up. No lights and no error noise. It didn't respond to pings, and web dashboard didn't come up either. I went thru the process again and put in 4GB RAM. It worked without a problem. There may be some compatibility differences. Idk. My ram was the same size, a little bit slower. My DS416 had 1GB ram so 4GB is already a big jump so I am not going to mess around with it anymore :)
It is amazing how faster it runs now after having turned off memory compression. Thank you guy, your tuto is awesome; I will now add a virtual machine and my home automation system as I was expecting. 😀
I just did the upgrade on my 916+ but I must have a Version 2 or something. I had two extra screws. One to hold the cage near the daughter board. And then another to hold the daughter board at the top. Great Video
Great video. Took 20 minutes. Only comment is getting the case off was not possible with just my bare fingers. Had to use a flat head screw driver to move the metal bar over the plastic catches. Fortunately nothing broke. Other than that it was easy. Also consider running a memory test on your new memory using the Synology Assistant. Be prepared for the test to run for a long time - it's been going for hours on 8GB on my DS416, and it's not finished yet!
Just popped a Hynix 4gb strip in my 416 Play...all good. Definitely worth doing to give your Play a boost, i gave everything a good clean at the same time, took less than an hour all in. It's eased my urge to upgrade....for now lol.
Thanks Juraj. By far the clearest 'how to' for ram upgrade. Even got the same ram as you (from MSY Technology in Australia, if people are trying to track down some - $87).
Thank you for documentation. Replacement done with Synology DS 416. Before changing RAM my NAs was very slow, after replacement RAM 1Gb to 8GB it works very, very well. Thank you so much! Regards P.
Thanks a lot, it very much helped me to upgrade my NAS that was getting a bit old since several updates ! :) We'll see what improvements will come next.
Great video and details. I wonder if you did any performance testing before and after. Also, do you think it’s worth it to pay 30% more for 1866 speed over 1600 RAM?
@@juraj_b thanks. I suspect the performance is negligible. I read an article about latency speed differences and it amounted to about 1% in overall speed in an otherwise highly optimized system. If the rest of the rig was not high performance it might be zero. As for the benchmarks of moving from 4GB RAM to 8GB are there any available that you can share?
Great. I just followed this to do my DS416+ play. Just rebooting after turning off memory compression now. Had a brief scare with the flashing blue power button just after reconnecting it, but it booted up fine within a minute. It could just be me, but it has booted up much quicker.
Following up. About a week after upgrading the RAM, I've noticed that the machine is certainly snappier - I can see the directories quicker when accessing the folders from my Mac. Transfers seem a bit quicker, and Synology photos seems to work better. Streaming from the NAS to the TV is much smoother now; also - and I don't know if it's related to the RAM - my smart TV used to take ages to refresh the contents of the video folder of my NAS (I'm talking hours/days). But now it's pretty instant. Yay. Thanks again.
Awesome video! I need to upgrade my RAM if I want to switch to DSM7 and I have a DS416j. Do you know if this RAM is compatible with DS416j? I think 4GB is enough for me, is the "Crucial RAM CT51264BF160B 4GB DDR3 1600 MHz CL11" model compatible? Thank's for your reply
Clearly there is a benefit to doing this however, never a fan when the memory modules require all this effort to access. Is the performance difference between what's installed and 8GB that large?
You should see a difference if you run apps other than just file sharing. Plex, Photo/Videostation and Docker all work more snappy. It is hard to put an empirical measure of the difference as thre are not any speed tests set up got Synology.
I'm trying this on a 916+ There is no catch inside the casing to release the two parts of the outer casing. There are two plastic lugs towards the open end of the case that significantly impede the case moving past the strut. I will need one pair of hands to lever the strut past those lugs and another pair to simultaneously push the two pieces apart. It makes me wonder whether Synology have modified the case to prevent people upgrading? Thoughts
You should be able to slide your fingers in and push with your thumb against it while holding the chassis from inside. I had a look and it's still the same. In the future iterations, like 918+ they actually made it even easier to upgrade and open the case. You don't even need to remove the motherboard as you need with 916+
OK, I will try again in the morning. I hung back because even applying some leverage with a flat blade screwdriver I could not get those lugs to clear the metal strut, and I did not want to damage the unit. The side of MY case is very stiff.
I wouldn't use a screw driver as you would need two of them at the same time and it's a hassle to manage. Your hand is just so much better tool for it. Hope it goes well!

thank you very much - i have successfully upgraded today my Synology DS416play from 1GB to 8 GB!
Thanks for this video ! Took maybe 15 minutes to do the upgrade and has already made a noticeable difference to my DS416 play. Cheers :)
Great video! Thank you!

Gold dust. Thanks so much for putting up this video. Clear instructions and i just replaced the RAM in my DS416Play with no trouble!

Fantastic Video and worked like a charm. Followed all the steps and just turned off Memory Compression per the WFP post ;)
Great guide! Just updated my Ds416play with cheap timeteck memory from amazon and it works wonder!
Thank you - seems to have worked like a charm for me on my DS416play!
Thanks for the tutorial, its easy to follow. I got mine upgraded with a used Samsung ddr3l, it works great.😎
Thanks, those are good instructions. Especially to try to unlock the plastic pins from the inside @1:37. That helped a lot.
My god it's like I have a new NAS. Thank you very much
A very good and useful video. My DS416Play is faster than ever now. Many thanks!
What improvements did you find after the ram increase? Thank you
Best regards. Perfekt introduction. Thanks a lot.
Thank you for this very helpful video - Did an upgrade to 8Gb following this - very nice :)
Great video and details. I wonder if you did any performance testing before and after. Also, do you think it’s worth it to pay 30% more for 1866 speed over 1600 RAM?
You can have a look at various benchmarks but to me the benefits didn't outweigh the cost so I went with cheaper 1600 RAM

Perfect!! thx works 416play with 4gb instead of 1gb. Much better. incl memory compression off (WFP comment).
Thanks man! Now, there is 8GB in my 416Play :)
thanks for the tutorial. is there any settings we should change after that? I just upgraded.
good guide. made my ram uprade a breeze
Awesome video! I need to upgrade my RAM if I want to switch to DSM7 and I have a DS416j.

Thank's for your reply
FYI, after some research and testing, on my DS416j there is 512gb of built-in DDR3 ram which is soldered to the board so there is no room for upgrade
Thanks - exceedingly helpful.
Well explained process. Thank you for the upload.
In DS416 (without play in model name) the motherboard looks exactly the same as in the video...but there is no ram slot :(
Hi Juraj, do you know if this 8Gb of RAM is compatible with DS415Play?
Clearly there is a benefit to doing this however, never a fan when the memory modules require all this effort to access. Is the performance difference between what's installed and 8GB that large?

@@wfp9378 gotcha, that makes sense. Thank you.
Am curious to know what the other un-used connections on the board are for.
Great video, does anyone tried to upgrade DS916+ to 16GB RAM, is it actually possible?
Thanks a lot, it really helped me
really very helpful video. many many thanks
Thanks a lot, a perfect guide!!!!!!

After some arm wresting the cover finally came off. After that everything else was a breeze! I got me 8GB RAM!
Excellent! Glad to hear that :)
For the DS416 V1 this tutorial does not work because there is no RAM slot! FYI
Why not 16Gb ram?
Some have tried 16GB sticks on the Synology forums, but it did not work for some reason.
Thanks man!
Do you think I can same the same thing on my DS415Play ?
Nope. The DS415play has the memory soldered on
Thanks this was very usefull :D
Could you share the spec or a link to the RAM module you have used?
Paul Alexandrescu I used Crucial CT102464BF160B. Thanks for watching
Can someone put a 16gb + ram stick in there ? Or is there no point and is it not supported ?
Beyondesp not supported
did 16G on 916+
Great
1:37 most difficurt part.. it takes 30 minutes for me
helpful!!
ESD protection!
