- I take you inside the service delivery collapse and decay of the small Eastern Cape town of Grahamstown (Makhanda).
This is a pilot episode for a new proposed initiative that'll be called the Mazakhele Series!
Mazakhele is a Zulu word for "build it yourself", and this series will see the Big Daddy Liberty Show travel the country to bring you stories of South Africans who are doing just that, in the face of government failure and collapse.
In this episode, I show you how residents have tried to take charge of their town, and are starting community-based initiative to stand on their own and BUILD IT THEMSLEVES!

It breaks my heart to see how useless my country has become.
Our government officials are not ready or willing to take the necessary actions to
protect our people. But when it comes to stealing public funds, they simply waste no
time to empty our nation. Our leaders are power drunk and simply act like gods over
the people they're meant to govern. May God help
I know the only way to get things done in certain areas is for residents to do it themselves, but bliksem it makes me spit poison that municipal employees are stealing our rates and taxes.
As a rate and tax payer, I am so GATVOL of paying double for things government should be providing. Sick to death of this 🤬 government!

Man I like your show. South Africa is such a great country. Such a wonderful history and charming people. It's so sad that Mr Ramaphosa and his associates, don't seem to care about any of that.
Ramaphosa inherited Zuma's corruption. I don't think he is moving fast enough. But I think he is trying his best. Remember Jacob Zuma wanted his wife to be president. I think all the corrupt cANCer comrades like Ace are fighting hard to undermine Ramaphosa.

From that view Grahamstown doesn't look like a "small dorpie" haha. It is small, but it's actually quite an important town! I've only been there twice. The neglect is heart breaking. But you know even here in Simon's Town where it's quite upmarket, everything owned by the navy or national government is in total ruins.
Does that include the frigates and the submarines ?

Big Daddy ... Please cover Ekurhuleni. We sit without power for days (almost a week) at a time. Late trash collection... Blocked sewerage drains, no streetlamps... And as soon as they get fixed they get stolen or vandalized. We just don't know where to go or who to speak to anymore.

Root cause is that the ANC Mayor of Ekurhuleni is basically a power hungry anti-minority racist!

BDL needs to come to Pietermaritzburg in KZN to see a similar situation what also once used to be a historic town. The reason for this chaotic situation is the government's policy of cadre employment and not employing qualified skilled people to the various disciplines in the municipalities.
Totally agree with you, PMB is totally disgusting and in total state of ruin.
Municipal (so called) manager must be ousted immediately, and someone compensate employed!!

Instead of the EFF spreading hatred and division amongst South Africans, their time could be better spent doing work for the people to make a difference for all citizens. Currently only political leaders, politically connected benefit while others wait on empty promises to materialize. The ANC & DA definitely should be doing so much more than talk

Until competent leaders step forward who are willing to help without self enrichment, little is going to change. The lure of obscenely high salaries for mayor's and councillors attracts the wrong sort of people. Government is full of such people. The mayor used to earn just a nominal wage...now he gets > R1M irrespective of his/ her competence. That's the fundamental problem.
This is disgusting the municipal manager should be kicked out he is useless.
Please go to Bedford,EC about 100km from Grahamstown, they have massive issues with the rubbish dump. Always burning trash which releases dioxin.

South Africa should really take steps and start to invest in biodegradable packaging because the garbage get dumped everwhere and it is a Safety Hazard.
The only way is to withhold taxes.
