That could never happen in small town United States today, where they've got the Bill of Rights condensed down to freedom of religion and freedom to bear arms, and where the local school board make sure it gets passed along to the next generation.
What a fantastic episode! A damn sight more intelligent than most TV made now, and goes into issues which the USA (and many other countries) seem to be dealing with right now also. In terms of what rights do we have, what is the role of violence, when can it be employed and be who...of law, of due process before someone is punished...free speech, the role of the press... the role of education... the power of those with money to supress ideas they do not like...tolerance of ideas you dont agree with...and of the ability of all, regardless of age or gender or race or class, to take part in how their society is run. All happening in ONE room. Amazing stuff! The book refered to is 'An Almanac of Liberty' , also 1954, by William O. Douglas. "Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas, in a series of essays, traces America's great movements to their political, social, religious and legal sources. He illuminates the significance of such matters as the influence of the Stamp Act on press censorship, Lincoln's stand on the ethics of slavery, and the Supreme Court's decision on segregation in the public schools."
Yes. Communists calling the kettle black. After the Cold War, it was confirmed that Stalin had America crawling with Communist spies and operatives. And yes, they did carry Communist cards. I met an elderly American Communist woman who confirmed this to me personally and was proud of the fact that her family carried these cards, which ultimately originated in the USSR. Today we are living the results of those years.
"A man loses a fraction of his freedom every time he's attacked like that and so do we. And when we try to trample down freedoms that have taken centuries to establish, well it's like time is moving backward instead of forward..."
The drama misses the point entirely. The bill of rights does not protect anyone from a brutal mob, that is the purpose of law enforcement and criminal law. The bill of rights protects the people from the whims of a rampantly out of control government, presumably, even when that government has the will of the majority behind it.
Then as now, only the elites' thoughts have meaning and value with little consideration for women, the black-brown, or poor folks - can our humanity change?
For those who choose not to see........... Well of course, they will see nothing. Everyone may have the right to speak, but no person has an obligation to hear.
His initials were "JC", they beat him, accused him and struck him some more and all he did was love them and to say things in love and truth that they did not want to hear. I'm sure you all recognized this of course.
“You don’t have to think just follow me”.....message of this time. Love one another. Love one another. 2021.
Keep on loving 2023
Just imagine...if we could still buy quality refrigerators that lasted 40yrs like those ones did
Sears salesman told me 15 years ago appliances built nowadays to last 3 to 5 years max as opposed to 30-40 years years ago.

This was as close as Hollywood could come to criticizing McCarthyism at that time.
And here we are now with a brand new era of McCarthyism happening before our very eyes.

Opening statement by narrator mistakenly calls Douglas' book "An Almanac of Freedom"

Those were the days.
This episode is really relevant given what is going on with the WOKE/PC/CANCEL CULTURE in the country today.
Have you been cancelled yet? I'm 65 so I'm cancelled due to ageism. Lol

Guess all the demon rats who happened upon this movie is now just a small melted spot of goo on the floor after watching it.
The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.
This is talking about far more important things than that.
@@boychildnew1 , it is the absolute FOUNDATION on which all the other rights stand. Without it, none of the others are safe.
