      Gotta say, following all these sponsorships I've now tried Kryonaut and Aeronaut. Both were very disappointing. Kryonaut got my GPU into the mid 80s after a year and Aeronauts max temp was already at 81°C. Both were significantly worse than the cheap chinese stuff for under 5 bucks in a huge tub (GD-2) which got my GPU down to 77°C max. Even tried them back to back on the same day cause I couldn't believe it. I originally bought the GD-2 for my 3D printer but it ended up trumping both of these very expensive Thermal Grizzly pastes on my PC as well. Turned out to be quite the waste of money when I thought these ought to be excellent.

      Your last vid reminded me that I'd missed the efficiency deep dive, so I went back and watched it-it's really good! Nice to see the uplift-or lack thereof-expressed concretely as frames per second per Joule-per-second (this is cheeky but not sarcastic-that is the *objectively correct* unit).

      @@GSBarlev This September coming up and it's 5 years since I last upgraded, by far the longest I've not upgraded which is usually every 3 or so years.
      But the irony is in all this, my hardware isn't really struggling with new games and I see little reason to need to upgrade and I'm not going to upgrade because they want me to upgrade, there needs to be a solid reason to upgrade with software doing things we can't do on older hardware, but I will admit, I will have upgraded by now if these companies didn't get so greedy over the last few years, especially in the gpu market, and it's probably that greed on why hardware is lasting much longer as far more are holding onto there existing hardware much longer and developers will always target what most can afford.
      To be fair, 4k/120 is helping a lot when I'm fine with playing games at 1080p/60, it also helps with all these upscaling tech and frame gen, but that is another avenue to extend the life of my PC, but in any case, I suspect I've got another 2 years with this rig before I have to upgrade if I want to play the latest games.

    My hypothesis with AM4 is that motherboard manufacturers wanted revenge on AMD for keeping such a long support of AM4 platform and made AM5 motherboards ridiculously overpriced which greatly hurt AMD's CPU sales. AMD got angry so they keep releasing AM4 CPUs as revenge to their revenge.

    • @Audiosan79
      @Audiosan79 2 місяці тому +5

      So, A motherbord manufackturer can sell the same bord at the same price for 5 years, is worse then selling it for 3 years? Were did you get that logic? They do have a cost of developing the boards. And after they made that cost back, it's pure profitt. It's better to keep selling those boards then to start over again. If you buy a new board with your upgrade, then you're selling you're old board. The person that buys your old board will not be buying a new board. So sales wise, it is 1-1=0.
      Also. Where i live, AM4 motherboards are often as expencive or even MORE expencive than the AM5 conterparts.

    • @ilove2learn783
      @ilove2learn783 2 місяці тому +9

      @@Audiosan79 You can sell new shiny stuff with higher margin or old stuff with lower margin. The logic is simple.
      MOBO manufacturers tried to force AMD to NOT prolong AM4 support what didn't happen. Pricing now is much better than it was 2 years ago. But at the beginning pricing was crazy for far too long (over a year AFAIK) hurting AMD and at the same time MOBO manufacturers. They didn't play it well and AMD outplayed them. In the end they want to make money so they WILL sell those AM4 motherboards because now they have to keep cash coming in somehow.

    • @Audiosan79
      @Audiosan79 2 місяці тому +4

      @@ilove2learn783 It normal that new things are more expencive when it first hit the marked. But it has little to do with margins. It has to do with development cost and the timeframe they have to make that money back. Also, it was the exact same thing with DDR5. Do you want to use the same exuse on that one too? Or maybe that was a revange act aganst Intel for supporting both DDR4 and DDR5 for 2 gens? Get real.
      If motherboard manufackturers were to force AMD off of AM4. they would keep there AM4 boards high and lower there AM5 board prices. Not the other way around.

That’s pretty disastrous, as the entire batch is said to be good for nothing but being replaced. I can see which GPU's I'm using, however they're all tagged as 4080 in logging and identity software. As a test I decided to run a few tests and check the speccing, and surely enough the specs were perfectly in line with data-center oriented GPU's, not 4080. So it's most likely the case that for whatever reason the software that reports the tags is making a mistake. And those are just L40's, L40G's, and L40S's. Especially the latter might be tagged as 4090D.

      Yes, the doubled throughput for avx512 in zen5 comes at a power cost, so avx512 both explains the uplift, and the reduced uplift when the TDP limits things. People have commented on, and tests have redone on, power efficiency, but I'd much prefer benchmarks at similar TDPs. People looking at high CPU usage like video compression will use PBO anyway.

      Eh, it used to be simpler, but Windows does lots of fancy pants stuff to the bootloader these days and that's before you get into secure boot and TPM shenanigans, so I expect it's as annoying as dualbooting an Intel macbook to run Linux used to be.
      "Oh, Mac OS has updated and I now have to rebuilt the whole bootloader again, yay"
      I expect they want something as 'zero touch' as possible for consumers, so they're probably looking at ways to integrate into what Windows does as cleanly as possible, without compromising the Windows side, either.
      Be a bit embarrassing if a Windows update broke SteamOS on a ROG ally. If SteamOS breaks Windows though, that might be legally actionable on Asus' part, in terms of clawing back costs of lost businesses if they refuse to do warranty repairs on them, or something equally Asus-like.

      @@Audiosan79 I think the point is that the 5500 wasn't just a down-rated 5600. The 5600 was the usual dual CPU/IO dual-die part, while the 5500 was a 6-core monolithic APU die with a failed GPU and only half the cache that was just sold as a regular CPU. It was salvage from a completely different product altogether with a confusing name, which is even more confusing now the X3D variant of that confusingly named 5500 failed-APU part actually IS a down-rated 5600X3D.... or is it? The 5600X3D was salvaged parts, but the production lines for those are likely so mature by now that AMD would need to just down-clock and laser-cut two cores off of otherwise perfectly healthy dies in order to satisfy global demand if they don't restrict availability...

      I am not flexing, I was explaining from the other side about using the inbuilt speed control to solve your problem.
      I like to consume lots of information fast, because then I can consume more information in my valuable time. If he talks slower it will take longer to watch his videos.
      I don't like that, that is why I watch them faster. And that is why I asked him to not do what you asked.
      You already have your solution to run the video slower if you actually need to, you are just lazy to use the option. And as I said you will likely improve with time.

    Use case, compile and run in fat docker containers with separate builder and runner containers. So think build a virtual environment of coupled components inside containers and inter container across multiple running alongside an entire dev environment. We use multi core systems to build and smoke test this way. Compilation tests and concurrent container environments.

    Wow, good to see a single use-case where you get a substantial improvement switching from Ryzen 7000 to 9000, but I wonder what drives this massive uplift in 9950x - 7950x was 32% faster than 7900x, somewhat linear to core count increase, but 9950x is 55% faster than 9900x and 33% than 7950x, while 9900x gets only 10% increase compared to 7900x. I would guess that TDP comes into play - 9950x, 7950x and 7900x have 170W TDP, 9900X has it clipped to 120 W. Perhaps you might consider 9900x results as "nerfed" or rerun this with normalized TDP (all set to 120 or all to 170) to compare apples to apples.
    I'm down for 5500X3D, if it comes to Poland, that would be a hell of a fun to bench.

    On the 5500X3D: while I definitely don't have any insights into the real AMD production constraints, I can imagine that while CCDs and IODs can be kept around without packaging for a while so volumes can be shifted between EPYC and Ryzen parts a bit after the initial waves have been made and sold.
    But the decision between making a CCD a V-cache enabled part needs to be done a little earlier, especially since TMSC is doing that part, too, while packaging is done elsewhere, potentially far away in distance and time. I also keep hearing that TMSC is often enough storing dies that aren't quite finished for their customers and potentially for a rather long time in order to optimize money flow e.g. for taxation reasons or stock market reporting.
    So if these are stored dies manufactured long ago or if these are batches of wafers newly started, if these were already packaded or freshly made... I'd love to know just out of curiosity, but that's obviously privileged information. The really cool aspect of how AMD does its business is that they have plenty of options and a large degree of flexibility, but also plenty of places where things can go wrong or bottlenecks can pop up. the logistics around product launch and supply have gotten way more complex than with monolithic dies!
    And actually I was surprised to see that 6-core V-cache CCDs were actually made... First off AMD most likely needs to start with some of the best (voltage) bins for V-cache CCDs, because they need all the thermal headroom they can get. Now if these lesser V-cache CCDs are then the result of non-perfect cache die mountings ruining some previously near perfect chips, or if they are in fact lesser chips originally allocated to go into some custom EPYC niche, I simply have no way of knowing. But at scale quite a lot of niches have customers ready to pay a bit of premium and rumors has V-cache really make a difference in some HPC workloads.
    Somehow it doesn't seem all that likely that they set out to create 5500X3D chips from the start, to me it really looks like leftover inventory being swept up and out where packaging and thus the choice between EPYC and Ryzen is something they can do much later than die manufacturing and where niche V-cache EPYC parts are much less likely to have market value (while stock guarantees needed to be met until around now).
