      @@TheHonestAudiophile Just set it up last night and listened for a few hours. WOW. In comparison to the SU-1 (rest of system: Wharfedale D320, Emotiva BASX A2M, WiiM PRO), noticeably improved imaging, instrument separation, holographic soundstage, tonality, better bass definition, and a smooth yet detailed top end. Guitar strings, kick drums, and piano key heft like I've never heard on my speakers. Everything is just better. I am very happy and surprised that this little DAC has improved my bedroom system this much. First time I've had to read a manual in a long time, but fairly easy to set up. Nice display, RGB lighting on top of the unit is really cool and I also like the volume knob. The headphone amp sounds good with my Sennheiser HD599SE and HD560S, which are driven easily. I can't believe this DAC only costs $160!!!!

    Agreed. Great bass on the R2R. In regard to detail and air, personally I don’t miss it when using the R2R compared. I don’t know why. It’s a relaxed sound. It’s quite a bit more engaging for music in my opinion compared to the K11 Delta Sigma. Teams very well with the SR11. Very good interpretation of the R2R, thanks. I have all my gear on NonOverSampling these days…

    Hey there. Thank you for your hard work producing this video.
    I had the Fiio K11 for my Apos x Audio-Technica ATH-R70x Refine (99 db/mw sensitivity, 470 ohm impedance). Felt it was zero difference between that and my PC motherboard audio. No more clear. No change to the sound.
    In your opinion, what would be a good pairing for a DAC / amplifier from a power requirements standpoint? It would be my first DAC / amplifier (aside from the returned K11) so basically I guess I’m asking for your recommendation for a “newcomer” looking for their first dedicated setup. Source audio would be my PC (Spotify and gaming).

    • @TheHonestAudiophile
      @TheHonestAudiophile  22 дні тому

      Interesting 🤔
      First, what's your budget? Next do you want separate DAC and amp or an all-in-one? Next, what sound signature do you seek?

    • @mhm35
      @mhm35 22 дні тому +1

      Given that $150 on the Fiio felt like I didn’t add any benefit, I’m wondering if it’s underpowered or inadequate components for meaningful improvement, or both. I see people consistently insist that the R70x needs amp to properly drive them. I used the balanced output on the Fiio K11.
      Given that it’s just going to sit alongside my existing PC and speakers, a DAC/Amplifier combo is ideal, but I’m flexible.
      Biggest concerns are power, balanced output, and I prefer a warm sound (which the headphones already provide). I don’t think I’d spend over $500, but I’m new to the hobby.

    I have the HIFIMAN HE400SE and Letshuoer S12 Pro, both running on my FIIO BTR5. Would this DAC deliver more power than the BTR5, and will it drive these effectively? Any feedback on performance differences would be great!

    • @TheHonestAudiophile
      @TheHonestAudiophile  11 днів тому

      Sorry I have no experience with the BTR5. Balanced the K11 R2R has 1300mW and the BTR5 has 240mW. So in theory, the K11 R2R should drive the HE400SE and S12 Pro better and potentially improve the sound presentation.

  • @jchambo86

    Before I purchased the FiiO K11 R2R, i was running a pair of Sennheiser HD6XX's out of a JDS Labs Atom AMP and I had plenty of power to drive them from PC to AMP. When I swapped the Atom out for the K11 R2R I needed to max out the volume (99) to come close to the loudness. So I would say another AMP is a must if you really crank your headphones. I use mine for music and gaming as well. I have a new pair of the Apos + Audio Technica R70X Refine coming in March (limited run / shipping in batches) so it will be interesting to see how those fare being 470 ohms vs my 6XX's being 300 ohms. I have since created a stack between the K11 R2R and Atom AMP for now.

    Well presented review. Would have been good to know how it compares to other r2r dacs, obviously more expensive than this. Also, as compared to other dacs in general especially because r2r dacs are usually liked for their natural tone and timbre, realism etc (albeit at the expense of detail retrieval, airiness etc) say in comparison with other benchmark dacs like the Mojo 2 for example? Thanks in advance, cheers.

    Excellent review of the R2R and comparison between the K11 original. From an FPS gaming perceptive where directional positional accuracy and precise spatial audio queues are important, would it be correct to assume that the original Fiio K11 would be the preferred choice.

    Thank you in advance for your answer :)

      The Para is a harder to drive planar headphone but the R2R does drive it with hi gain and balanced. I haven't heard the Edition XS but briefly at Axpona 24, about7 months ago.

      @@TheHonestAudiophile Hello, I already have the headphones, this is not my first contact with Para, I must admit it ;) the headphones are great, I can't take them off my head for hours. It's a pity that this particular piece has a problem with the clamp, it doesn't exist in this copy, it irritates me, but I don't want to bother with returning it anymore. As for the listening experience, let's say I'm a basshead who fell in love with music again thanks to these headphones :) I was tired of listening to music all the time - bass boosted, and this Moondrop cure me.

      Similar in a lot of ways, differing in power output, filters and extras like xbass and xspace. As for sound, the K11 R2R is a little more euphoric in presentation, a little more immersive sounding, the V3 may have a slight edge with detail retrieval and resolution. Overall, similar but the K11 R2R sounds more rich and accurate tonally. Personally, I would pick the K11 R2R over the Zen 3. But neither are a bad device.

    Hello. I know that we have already exchanged after my old comments on this subject, but I ask the question again: what is the use of a today's MacBook owner (with M2 or M3 chip), including MacBook Air of the same generation, of spend money on an external dac (or a dac + amp stack) since the internal DAC that equips these MacBooks of the Apple Silicone era by default is ALREADY itself of very high quality and compatible with high impedance professional headphones? I can personally testify to this since I was able to compare for months the internal DAC of my MacBook Air M2 with that of different quality external DACs, on the use of my Beyerdynamic DT-990 Pro headset with 250 ohm impedance (whose sound I really like). For a Windows user it’s perhaps necessary, but for a MacBook M2 or M3 owner it is not at all significant or essential. Obviously I'm only talking about the precise context where the headset is only used on the computer, I'm not talking about the context where the external dac/amp will be used on large speakers for listening to HI-Fi living room music.

      As I've mentioned in the past on numerous occasions throughout my channel history, I have no experience with MAC/Apple devices when it comes to my audiophile experience. I owned an Apple dongle a long time ago and it sounded awful with my Samsung phone and it was given away to a friend who had an Apple phone. As for using a MAC/Apple headphone output with headphones, no experience so I can't advise as to what benefits an external DAC and amplifier would make. All impressions made in my channel are made from Windows, Linux, Android devices connected to externals and an Allen & Heath QU24 used at my church. I don't use the headphone output of my laptops often but I find them to be sub-optimal in comparison to the externals. Obviously my phone doesn't have a headphone output so I use USB C dongles. If you don't hear a significant difference and don't see a reason to upgrade, then don't if your content with your MAC headphone output. I would think that with certain headphones there maybe a benefit but I can't confirm that as I don't have experience with MAC/Apple. You're question is valid but needs to asked if reviewers who use Apple/MAC devices and if I were you, I'd get a lot of responses to help you find the answers you seek.

      I am extremely surprised, almost astonished, that you use Microsoft or Android products rather than Apple's which, not only for audio, but also for video and professional photography, are vastly superior in terms of equipment quality. I know it : I spent 26 years on Windows, I can tell you that Apple is like migrating from $800 equipment to $5,000 equipment but for a lot less money to buy.
      I will rephrase my comment by asking the question differently: how do you explain that you resisted the temptation to try Apple computers to this extent? All current MacBooks are like NASA machines compared to Microsoft's. Believe me, I experience it every day (and they are of course much more beautiful and durable). MacOs, in terms of overall ergonomics and infallibility, is a pure diamond in comparison.
      The only 2 reasons to buy a Windows PC computer is that almost all video games are designed for this OS.
      The other reason is that they are much less expensive : which is actually false in use if we are willing to accept to consider all the extremely sophisticated software presence that is included by default + the long active life assured by MacOs + the incomparable quality of construction + the quality of the screens (of the image) which, itself, is a constant on any Mac computer.

    • @TheHonestAudiophile
      @TheHonestAudiophile  Місяць тому

      @paulwoaert @paulwoaert I actually use Apple computer at church with the Allen & Heath QU24. I find the OS to be difficult to understand.
      As for superior in audio and video, I disagree. Both have advantages and disadvantages. But I am not a professional with training with all the different audio and video applications.
      Both MAC and PC can be expensive and quite competent processing.
      As an amateur user with limited technical knowledge, I find that a PC and it's OS and applications are more user friendly and more than capable for all my needs.
      All my videos on UA-cam are recorded on my Samsung S24 Ultra with a USB microphone. I don't do any video or audio editing, the only editing I do is adding links and chapters. The jumps you see in the video are from me pausing the recording during the session, it isn't splicing or stitching videos. All audio is recorded with the Rode Podcaster USB microphone.
      If a Macbook is provided to the channel, I'll gladly do a comparison between it and my MSI laptop. But for now, I am sticking with my MSI as it is what I am content with.

      I'm not going to argue the point that power supplies can't make a difference. But in my honest opinion it is ridiculous to pay nearly 4x the cost of the K11 R2R for the power supply. The Sotm SPS 500 costs $550. The stock power supply of the K11 R2R is more than plenty good enough for most listeners.

    Dac of the week club …disposable equipment? Unless you can use some of the parts ? This technology is not stable it will change by next week? And that’s the problem with digital, just anything digital it’s only around for a minute,operating systems,connections ,chips , opamps ,all have the life of a house fly… it doesn’t inspire buyer confidence at all ! This stuff wouldn’t last as long as a lunch break for the employees at McIntosh! This is not equipment that has any staying power or value after.
    The volume control is the best thing about this? That’s the R2R ! If you could replace the volume pots on your pre amp with R2R you could have something useful …also silent videos suck ? This copyright Yoo tube thing is bullshit ! You must hear these components in some kind of way ? We can’t go to the HiFi stores and listen, so talking about equipment is weak and lame , and totally useless to make any buying decisions based on conversation? Definitely not your fault…I should start a site where music and equipment can meet ?
