100% right Vito. I remember when I first got my W115 240D. The people at my work said no way you will be able to drive a car that old everyday. They said you should get a new car. I told them my old 76 Mercedes would still be going when their car was in the crusher. Time had proven my right. The most reliable car I ever have owned is my 44 year old Mercedes.

I 100% agree with every statement you made!! Alot of people junk them because they don't think they have any worth. It's sad man , I even get upset when I see a classic Benz that had potential to being something unique just junked and looked at worthless.

Everything you said is true and I am very sad to see some mercedes owner leave their cars under trees or behind their house. When we offer to buy them and intend to restore them the price they offer is ridiculous. But prefer to let their car rusted and abundant them rather than selling it to us cheap. I still own a w123 280TE 1984, W126 280SEL 1983, AND R129 SL320 and I love the all. Thanks for your nice video. I am from malaysia

I run into several issues, I either have the time to work on my cars, or I have the money to purchase the parts I need.
There also is a point of no return with a vehicle. Where saving it isn't really feasible. I've purchased more than one Mercedes from a junkyard. Often times you just need to ask, I saw a half decent 300d in a yard once, went to the front desk and said listen, I want that whole car, whats it gonna cost me? They said its been here a week, we're crushing it tomorrow, the trans is bad, if you can get it out of there by tomorrow we'll give it to you for $300, thats what we'll get for the scrap tomorrow when we crush it. They handed me the keys, I filled the trans with fluid, I started it up, cycled the shifter, topped up the trans, and drove it to the front building. handed them $300 and drove home, my dad drove that car for 3 or 4 years with basically no issues.
A sadder story of where saving one isn't practical: I was given a 95 E300D, and after spending about 5 grand on parts (No labor cost, I'm a full time mechanic, so no shop was involved) I had been able to drive the car for about 3 weeks out of the entire year, every single time I'd get it fixed, I'd take it for a drive, and it would break down and leave me stranded somewhere. Towards the end I was getting frustrated, I was dealing with suspension parts snapping in half when I found that the front spring perches were rusting loose from the car, and also cylinder 5 and 6 valve seats were receding into the head, along with a laundry list of other major issues, while all the silly creature comforts worked fine, heated seats, power locks, sunroof, windows, central locking? yep, all worked, but the engine and chassis were falling to pieces very quickly, at that point I still didn't scrap the car, but sold it along with all the receipts, spare set of wheels and tires, a whole trunk full of brand new parts and full disclosure of the issues it had, but it did run and drive, the gentleman that bought it was debating between fixing it, or buying another identical car and using all the new parts I had on that car turning "black" into a parts car. Either way it wasn't wasted.
Around then I purchased a 82 300D, it had been shiestered up a bit, fresh paint, they hid a lot of rust, but the car was ok for the most part, since then I have done a 4 speed swap, 2.88 diff swap, k26 turbo and a mountain of other improvements and while in that process of fixing up "grey" I was given another 82 300D which had some engine issues, needed a new cam, followers and some other top end stuff because the turbo drain was leaking and it ran low on oil.

great video, you’re more than right. i’m such a huge fan of those cars i can’t explain it more. recently i had a lot of situations where i had to leave a note on the car because i felt so bad for the cars that were just sitting there. i left one at a 190e as well, a beauty. they at least contacted me back, they are going to restore it and told me they had it their family for 30 years.
Then a while after I found 3 w124’s all in pretty bad condition that have been sitting there for over 2 years. I had the chance to talk to the owner that dropped them off. When i asked him to sell me one of them for me to restore it he told me a ridiculous high of a price. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to pick it up. I wish.

Hey Vito, I recently purchased a 91 300e, 120000 miles, been sitting for around 3 years. I knew the car didn’t start when I purchased it but I couldn’t pass on the deal. Anyway, the car cranked but didnt start so I bypassed the fuel pump relay within the MAS module, now the car starts but runs pretty rough for about 10 seconds and shuts off. Does this mean I need a new MAS module ? I’m planning to check the fuel pump pressure and possible change injector+spark plugs and few other things but should I replace the MAS first ?

    • @Cruiser203
      @Cruiser203 Рік тому

Commenting again to add a bit more detail. I’ll most likely replace both the fuel pumps since the car shuts off after a few seconds, and drain out the old gas, do an oil and filter change before replacing spark plugs /injectors. Hopefully this fixes most of the issues, bought the car for $1000 Canadian, hoping I can get her running smooth for another $1500 or less

Agree, a few weeks ago i brought my kids to the doctor, spent like an hour, when i came back, the guy that controls the parking lot praised my 98' C250 TURBODIESEL WAGON, he said that these cars were built to last, not like these new junk korean, brazilian (very popular here in Paraguay) and japaneese cars that fall apart at 100.000km (wich i agree), i told him the car has 391.000 kilometers and the guy loved it even more
I agree with the brazilian cars opinion, my friend has a 06 VW GOL (not GOLF) that's a entry level economy car here in south america, now iy has TONS of electrical gremlins, the connectors are disintegrating, fuses blow up pretty commonly, they are CRAP

Most of the Classic Benzes were made for you to cruise with luxury on the autobahn and to feel like a king. You also forgot about amazing big tank W140 S600 and all the options it has. Now let me laugh when you put this car next to your Skyline!

Come on man, let's argue about this. I'll throw you another car. W126 560SEL.
Finally, I want to put a W123 300D next to your Skyline and guess who's gonna win? The one who will go a million miles. And that'll be a W123

Buying a cheap old mercedes is expensive... if you pay a mechanic to work on the car

It’s still cheaper to pay the mechanic and to have a reliable car forever than paying payments for a new car that will barely make it to 100k miles..

When you finish restoring the 190. Which you won't, you'll understand.

@@vintage76vipergreenBeetle i won't finish restoring? Just wait buddy, it'll be done! It'll look fantastic! I'll damn outchallenge you. I am gonna be honest with you, you're getting on my nerves. Not trying to be mean, but I run away from people who are negative and who discourage me from doing what I love and from loving these cars.
