A beautiful composition. Regarding the expense of good watercolour paper, while it is expensive for a full sheet of Arches, it is actually very good value in my opinion. From a full sheet, I would make 4 paintings about the size of this one. That would take me several weeks. I'd go slowly and carefully and I'd be happy with the results, because the quality of the paper makes it so much easier to get the effects that I want. So that's weeks of painting pleasure for £6.80 - the price of 2 coffees at Costa.

Stunning piece Anna! I too LOVE my Arches paper!😉 I 've only used the 300lb HP paper once, all I can say is that it's a wonderful paper especially for those of us who LOVE tons of glazing.

Absolutely beautiful! I think I would have been afraid to add that top layer of blue on the background! I would have been frightened of ruining it, but it turned out beautifully, very brave! I disagree about the swan behind the other needing to be darker, I think they both look just right. I have recently been painting unicorns, using negative painting and am quite pleased with the results.

Love your paintings…. I Enjoy listening to you explain your process of painting. These swans are stunning. I would paint more if I could afford to buy the paper I like to use. To be able to practice techniques on good paper would speed up my watercolour journey and my skills. 🙏🏼✨🎨💕

Yes, the price of watercolor paper is too pricey! They could actually make more money if we all could afford to buy MORE!

You are so right Ashley!!! It would get more people more excited about the possibilities of the medium, and to paint more… therefore to buy more paper 👌

So as Louis Vuitton could sell more but they choose not to. Michaella Pitterson had a guest ones; he perfectly explained this ideology. By making it scarce it is even more desirable. I love learning marketing. By the way there are planty of cheap paper. This year I was doing watercolor a lot and actually learned I do not like Arches that much, I was using Arches almost exclusevely. So I bought Montval hate it first, then fell in love with it. It doesn't have to be Arches people just prefer it. 🤭

I have tried so many different papers, and like them all, but only discovered the 'whiter' versions of some of them in the last twelve months. I definitely prefer the brighter paper! I don't understand why more aren't a brighter white. Especially when it's the 'white of the paper' that we as watercolourists use to depict something in white! I want my white flowers and buildings etc, to LOOK white not beige! Not aware of a whiter Arches paper, but I could be wrong. I like Arches, but it isn't anything special as far as I am concerned. I bought some Hanhemuellhe Collection paper (spelt wrong lol but sure you will know which one I mean), on a recommendation and I have only just got around to taking a sheet out of the pack. Already I love the look and feel of it, and can't wait to start laying down the paint! On the subject of less expensive paper, I found Daler Rowney's Langton Prestige (100% cotton), is a lot less pricey than the rest. I use that for practice and 'thumbnail' pieces, before deciding to do a larger version on my more expensive papers. Clairefontaine is slightly less than such as Arches aswell, and is a good paper. What I have found is that none of the none cotton, or even cotton mix, papers are any good for watercolour. They are yuk! Like everything, it's trial and error until we find what we like, and that includes the price lol!

Maybe this is obvious (so apologies in advance). But I buy the biggest size pad and cut it into smaller sizes. Saves a lot of money. Not great if you want to carry around a little workbook but I just take a few pieces inside a folder.

The Chinese are makinh Baohong watercolor now, available in cellulose and full cotton. In my country we usually use them or Canson montval. Baohong artist cotton paper is good.

Lovely painting Anna! Yes wc paper is outrageously expensive and I love the 300lb paper especially but can’t afford it for what we get paid as artists. I wish that buyers even understood this , that even $15 dollars more can make a huge difference. I dearly miss how much layering I could do on thicker paper making my paintings resemble oil paintings but I push the 140lb to the max likewise. Thank you for sharing your painting and I am planning on trying the Chronos brushes soon. I hope that they last longer then the versátiles, I use mostly Escoda and really wear out my brushes.😂

Love your tutorials and your recommendation of the Escoda Chronos brushes has been a game changer. They just do what I want! Question for you . What do you use to transfer the reference photo? I'm looking into a projector or Da Vinci Eye. And wondered if you use either or a grid method etc? I can draw but it takes so much time that I would rather be painting. I bought a roll of Arches and when you compare price to blocks it saves a lot of money. I stretch onto Gatorboard and find that lays even flatter than a block.

The paper is so expensive. I am a beginner so I have been using the khadi papers they're on the tinner side but it's cotton so it's vallowed me to se the difference with how watercolours work on cotton kaker vs cellulose paper. I want to try arches but my skills are not good and it's so expensive. Do you ever use cheaper paper or a sketchbook to practice or do you only exclusively use arches?
