He was a legend. I tell people that Johnny Cash’s genre was Johnny Cash.
I like that!!!
Absolutely!
definitely one of a kind for sure.
When Johnny Cash was asked what kind of music he sang, he said that he sang “American music”.
Your statement is brilliant. And so very true!
Johnny Cash owns this song forever. It's the kind of rendition of a song where the lyrics and arrangement and vocals are so suited to each other that any other version just pales in comparison.
Johnny has that wisdom like very few in the music industry. Nine inch nails is like emo punk. I don’t think anyone saw him covering them and it turned out to one of the best covers of all time.
Who else does this song?
@@t.lee.p9182 Exactly. Johnny Cash wrote this and recorded it not long before his passing. What other version of this song even exists that could compete with it?
@@futurereflections4097 What is Emo Punk ?
It’s always been called Industrial.
@@adnap I guess yeah, their original version of hurt was very emo though, nihilistic even. And cash made that song about sadness and it was very emotional, despite the original purposely lacking emotion, which is an emotion in itself I guess.
I do respect NIN a lot. Every day is exactly the same is perfect (also emo vibes) and that song about money, I forget it.
Johnny Cash could "take you to church" without sounding "preachy" , he just sounded wise.
“One hundred million Angels singing” imagine seeing and hearing that. 🙏
Tears of joy and fright all at the same time
@@shaunrichards4821 why fright ? Just curious
@@gdawg4ever119 not knowing what's coming
@@shaunrichards4821 oh ok.
@@gdawg4ever119 praise to Jesus my friend
This song was released in May of 2002. Johnny Cash was 70 years of age. His beloved wife, June Carter Cash, died one year after the release of this song, and John, shattered by her passing, went to meet her four months later.
If the American Recordings were all he ever recorded, he would be a legend in the music industry.
I always assumed it was way older
Another interesting thing is that the American Recordings were all produced by Rick Rubin who made his career producing Hip Hop. He approached Johnny with the idea.
This song gives me goosebumps!!! JESUS!! THE ALPHA AND OMEGA. THE BEGINNING AND THE END ❤️
The First and the Last
The hair on your arms, will stand up.
You can feel it in how he sang this song, he knew he'd be seeing the man on the white horse soon enough, and he makes us all feel how close that man is. ❤
Absolutely, amen!
Amen
Johnny Cash didn't go off to see the 'White Horse'. The rider on the white beast is a false God.
@@jollykone2258 My bad. You're right. The pale horse carries death, not the white horse (I was going for death). It's been a while since I last read this passage. Apparently, there is some theological dispute over whether the white horse carries Jesus Christ or the Anti-Christ, and some say it's the Holy Ghost. You're clearly in the Anti-Christ camp of translations.
@@xzonia1In the original Greek translation the pale(light green and sickly) horse is death with hell behind it and Christ will return riding a white horse. The Antichrist will come riding a donkey(a sign of modesty) to mimic Jesus earthly body riding into Jerusalem as to show he is for the common people. Christ will return riding a white horse with a double edged sword in his mouth(the word of God) to vanquish the Antichrist and armies of the world gathered to kill the last of the true believers. But You're correct you just needed a little clarification, God bless friend!
Johnny cash is so deep with layers, fun songs, heartbreaking songs, ballads, and covers of other genres, you never know what is next.
everyone else covers bands that influenced them, cash covers bands he's influenced.
I agree with everyone that has suggested "Hurt". I've only heard it in it's entirety one time. It is pure emotion.
Jay reacted to "Hurt" about a year ago (back before Amber was on the channel). Not sure if she's heard it as well (like if he played it for her afterward or she watched his reaction or something). If not, might be a good one to revisit.
@@johnplaysgames3120 But we want Amber to watch it. What's the point of watching a reaction without her??
@@brianmcmaster5112 I agree. We all want to see her get emotional. There are a lot of songs back then that she should listen to.
This song is like a sermon from a man who's seen it and lived it all. He's simply saying there will be a day when you will be judged accordingly, whether you have been good or wicked and it was all in that book to read that's been around for thousands of years. A very deep, spiritual and reflective song.
Johnny Cash's voice is godlike! Especially when he hit the 90's and released all these great albums with Rick Rubin!
Can we get a "Behind the Music"about the genius career of Mr.Rick Rubin?
Johnny Cash is much like Dolly Parton, in that they're both so good at everything they do, they are appreciated by a very wide audience. I'm a 70's rocker type, but always liked pretty much every Johnny Cash song I ever heard. This is the first time I've heard this particular song, it's a gem!
I knew of Johnny Cash growing up but I didn’t start listening to him until after I saw the marvel X-Men film called Logan. His music fit that movie so much I started researching. My favorite song by him will forever be “hurt.“ But this one was actually in played in the credits of Logan. And it fit the main character Logan/wolverine so well!
This man you can tell has felt the ranges of joy and happiness but also deep hurt and pain! And he expresses that in every song he did.
What makes you especially pay attention to this rendition is that you can hear the wealth of experience in his voice. There's a thoroughly lived lifetime behind what he's telling us.
Rendition? Johnny wrote this, one of the last he wrote
@@andrewft31 Yeah but I could have sworn I'd heard other people cover it, none doing it as well. Maybe I'm misremembering.
You can’t argue when he sings the truth. It’s soul shaking
This song always makes me cry. It always carried weight both because of the depth it has and the fact it was one of the last songs he ever done.
God bless and rest in peace Johnny Cash…
I can't remember a time when the image & music of Johnny Cash wasn't in my life. He WAS American music to me and one of the all-time great story tellers. I know no one lives forever, but his passing was like a loss of a family member to me. I'm so happy he left us still at the top of his musical game. May the man in black rest in eternal peace and his music inspire and influence generations to come.
One of my favorite Johnny Cash songs! Loved how it was used in the beginning of the "Dawn of the Dead" remake. Also, another great one to listen to is "It's All Over".
That’s right! Love that movie.
It was used perfectly in the movie!
Heck yes, this song in the opening credits set the scene of that movie so beautifully
Love Johnny Cash, one of my all time favorites ✌❤🎶
The album he recorded after losing his dear June is utterly haunting. The pain and loss tears at your heart.
Dad had the Folsom prison album when I was a kid!! Awesome artist!!🤘🔥
CASH.
I hit like before even listen.
So cool to see younger generations appreciate this American icon.
I remember the first time I heard this song. I was stunned by its power, and still am, all these years later.
This song is great. And the thing is that Johnny Cash did his final albums basically off the top of his head, with little rehearsal, as he was in his final days. Have you done "Hurt" yet? It's beyond awesome.
"Girl from the North Country" was sung as a duet by Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan.
My youngest sister always loved Johnny. Our mum wrote to him and asked him for a photo signed. My sister had a disability and didn't speak for the 1st 5 years of her life.
Loved music especially JC.
We never thought any more of it.
Then one day it arrived.
She loved it.
In her 40th year we lost her and our dad in a car accident together in 2006.
Johnny's signed photo went with her.
May they rest in blessed peace with our Lord.
You must listen to his cover of Nine Inch Nails "Hurt". His absolute last masterpiece. So much so, Trent Reznor admitted that the song was no longer his but Johnny's.
You can absolutely hear his pain and suffering as he mourns the loss of June Carter.
Another great hit of his is his cover of "God's Gonna Cut You Down". Worth a listen.
YES!! I AGREE!! 👍😃❣️😃👍
These Rick Rubin produced albums are all amazing. So intimate.
My dad has always loved Johnny Cash. I never liked his music when I was younger but I have a great appreciation of Johnny now. You're absolutely right, he was an amazing storyteller.
The Pale Rider... Johnny Cash was full of Reflection when he sang this song???
Hope he found the peace and glory he deserves..🙏✌️♥️🥃
I'm not even Christian and this is one of my favorite songs
this song is actually about the return of Christ and his judgment. Johnny studied the bible and there are a lot of references in this to it. BTW; he did this before he died because we are running out of time, google the river euphrates drying up and the book of Revelation in the bible.
@@magdalenem4949 Yes I am well aware. It's a great song even though it's based on a fictional work
@@Grimm299 it's a shame you think it's fiction, explain why psalm 22 written by david 800 years before Christ describes his death on the cross? you cant. Explain why Revelation 16 talks about the River Euphrates drying up, and now it is. Regardless of your beliefs, I wish a merry Christmas and hope you find the truth before it's too late Have a blessed 2023.
@@magdalenem4949 I'm not really interested in spending my time like that but thank you anyway. You have a Happy Festivus!
@@Grimm299 it's a festivus for the rest-of-us! :) "I find tinsel distracting" LOL. Cheers.
Johnny Cash was a prolific singer. The man comes around and Hurt are two masterpieces he did near the end of his life.
This was part of a series of albums called the American albums (named after the studio they were recorded in) towards the end of his career when everyone had written him off as an old man. Easily some of his best work.
Yes. Rick Rubin produced an they are all amazing.
American recordings produced by Rick Rubin this song dates to 2003 the year he died. RIP 🙏 Johnny Cash
Awesome song, I just love its layers. The rhythm is like the four horses riding hard, the guitar simple yet spot on.
Jay & Amber
This is why that Johnny was famously known as "Man In Black" because he and his classic songs represents for those who are poor, downtrodden, and working class.
Just love that you reacted to this great song and one of a kind artist. You two are wonderful.
Johnny has a great voice, but I think what captivates us is he sings with conviction.
I absolutely love the piano's bass notes in the melody. It's a really great representation of his voice 💖🦋
One of my favs by Johnny is his version of the song "Hurt" I cry every time. Hes a remarkable storyteller. Thanx so much, Many Blessings
Beautiful song as only could be told by Johnny Cash. Judgement day is coming so y'all better be on your best behavior.
Love the guitars, perfect to be be paired with Johnny. Loved your reaction. You make me SMILE. 😊😊
Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️❤️ 🇨🇦 🇨🇦
This whole album is genius.
The Album this song is from was indeed his last. He had lost his beloved wife June Carter a few years prior and his health wasn’t good. The entire album is about confronting death. Top producers were lining up to work with him and the album is very stripped down instrumentally but arranged so perfectly that a single piano or organ note creates beautifully rich drama in the songs. He does a lot of covers of some classics, including Danny Boy and Bridge Over Troubled Waters. But the one that cuts deep to listen to is the cover of the Nine Inch Nails song “Hurt.” It’s a perfect metaphor for his life, which included addiction, and the video is quite moving. The entire album is a masterpiece and a fitting final bow in an illustrious career and life, flaws and all.
and now, "gods gonna cut you down "
It made me think of Tombstone when Wyatt Earp said, " Tell them I'm coming, and hell's coming with me you hear, hell's coming with me!"
Johnny Cash is our rock&roll grandfather , you listen to his voice and truth will follow... eyes wide open.. with amaze, cause the man in black came around... and sang his song.
Johnny Cash is a national treasure and I am so pleased you are reacting to another one of his songs! But now for something unique and completely different - a cover of Adele's "Hello" by Walk Off The Earth featuring Myles and Isaac! Trust me you have never seen or heard anything like this amazing band!!
A fun song by Johnny is "Oney", a song for the Working man about a man who is retireing and tells them what he really thinks. Should also do "Jackson" a song he sings with his wife June.
I wasn't sure if anyone knew Oney.. always had me laughing!!
Love this song!
Another storytelling man is Roger Miller. "Dang Me", "You Can't Roller Skate In a Buffalo Herd", "King Of The Road", and many more.
Mr.Cash was one of a kind! He will never be replaced!
Funfact Johnny and June Carter Cash were at several Billy Graham crusades singing and testifying about how their faith had transformed their lives.
Mine did and goose bumps hearing the truth..Amen
For sure
You don't have to be a hard-core country fan to appreciate Johnny Cash. He's one of the greats. This song reminded me of a song by Peter, Paul & Mary called The King of Names. It's a fantastic song, and it features the great Paul Butterfield on harmonica.
Thanks to Producer Rick Rubin..and many of these last four albums, known as the AMERICAN RECORDINGS...the accoustic guitar is played by Tom Petty and Mike Campbell...ya know the Heart breakers!...
Johnny has always been a legend on the radio when I was growing up. And this song is just another example of his amazing work.
A whole new generation was introduced to Johnny Cash when this very song was used in the zombie apocalypse classic movie Dawn Of The Dead.
My daughter was 12 when she first heard this song and she loved it so much. She's 15 now and my wife uses this song as her ring tone when my daughter calls. Great song and emotion.
You really need to give a listen to Tennessee Earnie Ford 16 Tons. His voice is deeper than this and he’s also a great storyteller.
Johnny Cash "I've been Everywhere"..
Right?
Fantastic!
The way the guitar and voice mix and then the piano layered over the top, just brilliant
The man in black! Ive been listening to him since I was in grade school in the 1960's.
this song just really embodies awesomeness!! glad you all got to react to it!!
He did a duet with Rosanne called "September When It Comes" and another with June called "Far Side Banks of Jordan" which you should hear.
I love the Biblical imagery and allusions in this song and Johnny's incredible delivery. Please consider reacting to Josh Turner's "Long Black Train", "Will You Go With Me", and "Your Man" (which was written by Chris Stapleton), Colin Ray's "Love, Me", Kings of Leon "Molly's Chambers", The Cat Empire "Sly", Dave Matthews Band "Where Are You Going", "Ants Marching", "What Would You Say", "Crush", and "Crash into Me", Jack Johnson "Sitting, Waiting, Wishing", "Bubble Toes", "Banana Pancakes", and "Flake", Keith Green "Oh Lord, You're Beautiful", For King and Country "Little Drummer Boy" and "The Proof of Your Love", and Rich Mullins "Hold Me, Jesus" and "Sometimes by Steps".
Of course this song is amazing, and THE MAN himself singing it is awesome. I loved they used it in Blacklist....set the mood perfectly.
He takes you to church and you don't realise. He's brilliant.
I swear I just popped this channel on to check it out. I've just listened to like ten songs with you guys. It's like listening to great music with ppl who really knows music. I love chilling with you guys. Love y'all keep up this channel please
The low keys on the piano are played perfectly for this song
Think this Is my favourite Johnny cash song! It's mind-blowing
I read this was the last song he wrote, and he dreamed the line Whirlwind in the thorn trees. He knew he read it before, and found it in the Bible.
Two recommendations for you by Johnny Cash: Ring of Fire & Long Black Veil. So many great songs in his catalog-you really can’t go wrong with any of them. Great reaction as always!
This song reminds me of my grandfather. He was a preacher. ❤
"This one's not on the lullabies" yeah no kidding 😂 just picturing kids in tears
New for me too! Loved it! Great reaction guys!
WELL done! I don't know if you've done his version of "Hurt," but if you ever do, have tissues handy.
Jay reacted to "Hurt" about a year ago. I believe that was before Amber was on the channel so it might still be a good one for her to react to (assuming he didn't play it for her afterward or she didn't watch his reaction videos).
World weary and gravitas in his voice.
Always a pleasure. Thanx💞💓💖
Damn, Johnny Cash....so thankful to have been alive during his time on earth.
"...a voice that will take a bullet for you"....highest praise I've ever heard
Great song and great reaction. Emotional song for sure for a lot of reasons.
Never heard this one! Thank you both! Amazing!! ❤
I have always loved Johnny Cash. THANK YOU for reacting to this song; it is one I never heard. Amber, you are right, listening to him at the age he was; YES, his voice makes one want to listen to him, to lean in to hear what he is speaking about.
a mma fighter named brian bowles used to use this song when he was champ, it was so perfect for a champions walk.
For another great song from Cash's last I'd really recommend his cover of Sting's Hung My Head. It's an actual full-blown story so I'd really recommend a lyric video, Johnny tells the story very well.
“It’s hard for thee to kick against the pricks” will be on my tombstone.
Linda Ronstadt put out an entire album of lullabies and “baby friendly” adaptations of other classic sounds. It’s called “Dedicated to the One I Love” and she released it when she adopted her two children in the 90’s. You might wanna check it out for Baby Luca. You have so much to explore in Linda’s catalogue. I miss seeing her on your channel😢
great song.. luved it first time i heard it.
I'm not religious, but i love this song.
U should be, research ron wyatt
The man took on the burden of America's tortured soul and made it his mission to take us to task and hold us accountable. Our beautiful dark angel.
I’m 28 and I too grew up with Johnny Cash from those lullabies. My late aunt used to sing to me You Are my Sunshine by JC. Since then I’ve been a big Cash guy. He’s my all time favorite solo artist. Just recently I picked up a few of his collections in cd form at a local record shop. So I’ll recommend some hidden gems that I found for the first time on those cds. Definitely the Wanderer feat U2 with Johnny Cash. If I were a Carpenter, Sunday Morning coming Down & Thirteen all great underrated songs by the man in Black
Your exactly right about the wisdom in his voice it's so expressive even his guitar playing is unique to him, Singing in Vietnam talking blues and Drive on are songs that I've never heard anyone react to. During the Vietnam war Johnny and June did a lot of USO shows over there these songs are about that time. Cash will always have my respect being a former service member, interesting fact Johnny Cash was the first westerner to know Stalin died as he decoded the Russian communications when he was in the Air Force.
"Delia's Gone" "One Piece at a Time" " Rusty Cage"a Soundgarden cover. Just a couple more great Johnny Cash songs to listen too.
What a GREAT Cash song to choose. I'd forgotten it but the hook guitar is epic.
I've been patiently waiting for you to get to this song
I love the guitar in this beautiful song!
He really has great older songs like country alternative rock. So many genres mixed in one. Great story telling and music. S ok many great songs b up by this many decades
I don’t kneel for no one except that man. And I will only stand when he tells me I can…
Talk about chills!!!
This was the last song he wrote and recorded. A very powerful piece.
So smooth
