I struggle with gambling. A weird tactic that worked for me was to buy something I small but something important to me, something that I would not have bought because I either sustained gambling losses or wanted to spend gambling, then tell gambling to “F” off … this replaced you today and this actually made me happy!
hi Jacyueline, thank you for these videos, you are so honest and open and this is important. what you need to do is to put as many barriers as you can between you and gambling. willpower alone is not a solution, willpower will let you down. I remember an analogy about this in one of the books about gambling. the story of Ulysses and the sirens is an old myth about Ulysses that he needs to reach home and the way to go there passes by the sirens' island, the sirens sing to the sailors with a beautiful sound to pull them to the island and eat them. there is a helpful analogy from this story to fight the gambling urges, I will quote the below from the book: ” Ulysses did not blindly trust that the strength of his current motivation to get home would endure through the future high-risk situation of hearing the sirens’ song. He understood that motivation is not a fixed state - it is susceptible to environmental influences - our beliefs are somewhat state-dependent and can change. He knew motivation was not enough; he needed planning and strategy. He undertook a functional analysis of his high-risk situation. He used a range of creative strategies, wax to prevent the crew from hearing the song (stimulus control) and rope to tie himself to the mast to prevent himself from responding. Ulysses and the sirens is a good metaphor for dealing with cravings that we cannot avoid.”
Also, I tried a couple of apps for my phone that would block any gambling website out there. True, I was able to find a way around the apps sooner or later, but for a while they worked - they just won't let you open anything on your phone. What really worked was to block my own accounts on the two online betting websites I used. Neither had the actual option for self exclusion because they're all fucking leeches, but on one site I messed up my password many times on purpose until my account was blocked. On the other that wouldn't work, so I officially requested that my personal data be deleted based on GDPR blah blah and they blocked the account eventually. And there's a nice channel here - Only Phil - the guy's great, having his own fight, makes really good videos about addiction, maybe you know the channel. It was his videos actually that made me realize I had a problem.
Hello Jackie you are definitely absolutely right, it is important to be in control in your life... firm in this struggle, you will emerge victorious 😃😃👍👍
Good job, please don't give in! Money issues are solved way more slowly than they're created, that's true. Like, I've calculated I'll need a couple of years to fix what I did in six months of shit. And this makes me angry at gambling if that makes sense and sometimes such a negative emotion like hatred can actually give me the strength and stubbornness to resist. Good doing the vids, I guess sitting down and talking to us and sharing helps in getting to the core of what's going on in your head, when and why. And when you understand it, you can fix it. So keep talking :) Btw, maybe you've done it already, but when I needed money, I found lots of stuff I didn't need/use anymore that I sold online and people happily bought, lol. Not a quick income, but it worked for me.
You won’t now but just be careful later when you are more comfortable and have build up some money on acc then temptation is higher just small amount Meaby i get lucky, thats how i fell into the hole after 8 months gf
Yeah, that's what happened to me, too. Never played huge sums of money but when I got a good job that paid well and I was having "extra" money I started to play more and bigger bets. Crazy if you think of it: you've been ok in life with less and then you get more and for some reason, you think it would be nice to have more. Well... now I'm broke. But we fall and we learn.
