Zodiac MX6 Not Moving Part 2: Replacing the Engine Assembly R0524900

- In this series of videos I go over replacing parts in your Zodiac MX6 if it is not moving in the pool or not turning. The thing I really like about the MX6 vs the MX8 is how easy it is to work on. Not that the MX8 is difficult, but there are less parts in the MX6 and it just is compact and easier to work on. You will also be able to isolate the problem easier on the M6 and get it up and running like new again in a matter of minutes.
One of the drawbacks of the MX6 is all of the moving parts wear out over time. Fortunately the parts are inexpensive and easy to install. I would say after 1 ½ to 2 years you will need to start to replace some parts, and this depends on the pool run time also. But figure at the 2 year mark replacing all of these parts featured in this video series would be a good idea.
This first video covers what to do if the MX6 stops going thru it's turn cycle. Very common in the MX8 but less common in the MX6 since there is only one Directional Device in it. The MX6 uses the Directional Device Side A, part #R0524700 - you will often see it listed for the MX8 like this “Baracuda R0524700 Side A Direction Control Device Replacement for Baracuda MX8 Pool Cleaner.”
The same part is used for both cleaners.
In this video I cover replacing the Engine in your MX6. The Engine does wear out over time and if you notice that after you change the tracks that the cleaner still is moving very slow even with very
good suction, chances are the engine is worn out. It is pretty easy to swap out and sells for $20-$30 so it isn't too expensive to replace. Zodiac R0524900 Cleaner Engine Assembly: amzn.to/2DaDr3S
The same Engine is used for both the MX6 and MX8 so even though the part says it is for the MX8 it will work fine in the MX6.
The Engine is the heart of the MX6 and this is what spins to pick up the debris in your pool. Depending on your pool's run time you figure this thing is spinning everyday for 6 to 8 hours so after a couple of years it will start to slow down. The MX6 will still work fine, you will just notice that it moves slower than when you first dropped it in the pool. But after replacing the engine as long as the Tracks are still good it will move at full speed again.
If you change the Engine and the MX6 is still not moving at full speed maybe the Cyclonic Turbine is also worn out. They are all tied together, the Engine the Tracks and the Cyclonic Turbine so it would not be a bad idea to change all three parts at the same time (change both tracks at the same time).

You are spot on for fixes with my Zodiac pool devices! Thorough, concise, and easy to follow.
I just did this today. I bought the parts on-line and saved 50% compared to buying a rebuild kit at the pool supply store.
It was working great and now not running. I checked and nothing is caught in it. I have changed everything but the directional control. What do you think?
Would replacing the engine assembly be recommended before the turbine? I believe the assembly powers the turbine..
I just moved into a house with an MX6 that doesn't climb the walls so I replaced the tracks. Now it doesn't move at all. I'm guessing the extra tension of the new tracks are adding resistance to the vacuum. Do you recommend changing the gears or the engine next? I'm looking at the engine assembly and I don't see too much wear. Thanks!
I would take the tracks off and spin the turbine on the bottom to see if the parts move. Maybe a bad directional device.
@@SPL without the new tracks it works. I went back to the old worn ones and it moves
@@DOXI305 same problem I threw away the old ones.FML
It was working great and now not running. I checked and nothing is caught in it. I have changed everything but the directional control. What do you think?
Change that only if the Cleaner is not spinning and changing direction. Check the tracks to make sure they are grabbing and spinning.
I’ve replaced the bearings, tires, turbine and the scrubber - and my device is still not moving. It was moving before I replaced tires (but slowly). So I’ve bought each part in sequence with your recommendations. Any hints as to what could be wrong ? Everything moves by hand with no issue. I’m stumped.
If possible to rule out your pool equipment and a problem out of the water, if you can drop the cleaner into a neighbor a friends pool that is one step I take. Of course I have easy access to multiple pools but it is still a step I would recommend at this point.
I've replaced all parts still not working.I do notice the tubing moving around like when you cover a vacuum hose. The hose is clear I checked it.
what does the turbine or aka the engine assembly exactly do in terms of performance? I've seen some amazon reviews that it made the cleaner move faster and like new but does this part really make that much of a difference? mine has some light scratches on it due to little debris getting caught and grinding against it while spinning but in terms of feel, it still feels hard and not all soft and flimsy because of the chlorine.
It makes all the difference really. For instance if you cut one of the vanes off - which I have done in my testing, the cleaner will crawl like a turtle. So with a new engine it will speed up the cleaner significantly. They wear out pretty slowly and will last 3 years or more under normal running time.
I have an MX6 that doesn’t reverse. If you spin the bottom, when it switches into the reverse gear, the wheels don’t spin until it returns to the forward gear. Any idea what needs to be replaced?
Sounds like the directional Device.
I completely rebuilt my MX6 and noticed the replacement bearings do not fit snuggly on the engine assembly. It's not moving at all; could this be the problem?
Yes, you may have to move them in towards the engine assembly.
@@SPL well..... I used some plumber's teflon tape to tighten the bearings onto the motor shaft and the vacuum scooted around for about 15 minutes and then just stopped in the middle of the pool.
How can you tell if those bearings are worn out? Thank you
It will be very hard to spin the engine by hand
@@SPL gotcha. Yeah that is a non issue. The rubber wheels are good for traction. Thing just stopped moving. Filter is clean, baskets are empty plenty of suction. Hoses are all good. It's becoming frustrating lol
the engine assembly turbines catches with the body frame ,,any suggestions?
See if a fin on the turbine is out of alignment. It can happen.
@@SPL I am having this problem too and all the fins look fine. How do you know if the engine assembly or bearings need to be replaced? I'm super frustrated!
My MX6 goes to the corner of the pool bench and hangs up at the same spot every day. It does not move until I physically move it to another place in the pool.
Try removing one hose section and see if that helps.
Try having your pool cleaner cleaned out....poor suction from the pool filter will cause these things to fail....cleaned my filter and all is good
Right on!
mine just falls on its side and doesn't right itself
Sounds like the float is in the wrong location. Try moving it up the first hose about 20 inches from the cleaner head.
@@SPL the float?
