You will be a happy man if you buy yourself a couple refractors . 1 for SG & 1 for alcohol %. Rather than having to get an 8oz clear sample you only need a few drops. Make sure you get the automatic temperature compensation . You will be good between ,,,,,°50-°86f. Just be sure calibrate before using for the 1st time.I still have my hydrometers and uae em especially for checking final gravity.
I plan on trying them out one day 😂 I have heard alot of good things about them also I recently just got a ispindle digital hydrometer I'ma start using and testing to see how accurate it is
Thanks for the new video, Red. Strawberries are first to come off here in Nashville NC. Glad to see some brandy content. Looking forward to the spring time fruit.
Ohh yeah they are I can't wait I'm hoping to get some this year I never know what bulk fruit I will get just depends on what my sources have I really want to do a strawberry Banana brandy though 😁
Great video! You may want to consider using pectic enzymes regardless bc they've been shown to reduce methanol by up to 70% in apple brandy in NIH studies.
Your exactly right on that... I usually do on most of my brandys it was really late when i did this brandy and I was being kinda lazy 😂 but I usually do use pectic enzymes and will in future videos...Shine On
I'm pretty lucky, my sister and brother-in-law own an apple orchard and I have made a 100% apple mash.. distilled it and it was really good. I kept it as white dog.
You are lucky 😂 I have done it 1 time several years ago with no additional sugar or nothing just apples and it was off the charts good but took so much Apples and I only got 1 gallon of hearts 😆
I appreciate that the past few months have been insanely busy but I'm getting back on track now...That is definitely something I will have to think about right there I definitely have a bunch of recipes I have came up with over the years
Yep you are correct on that one I do invert the sugar sometimes myself all really depends on what I'm making and how much sugar I am planning to use if I'm not using more than a pound per gallon and I usually want invert it on my palette the difference between the two is very small but it's always good if you have time to invert every little thing adds up to make a quality product...Shine On
I aint never made a brandy but I am loaded up on fruit so this is going to be my first shot, wish me luck man. I do like you videos they are very informative. Thank you man take it easy.
I appreciate your support Brandy is definitely a difference animal for sure some people expect fruit juice to come out the worm but it's a hint of what it's made from but if done right it's fantastic here is a few tips The more fruit you use helps also freeze it first it helps you extract more juice which is more flavor also if you run a thumper look into infusing during your run or at least pack your thumper full of fruit and fruit juice but other than that it's the same as running anything else good luck to you If you have any questions feel free to ask
Yeah I need to remove that they shut the website down if you message my on the shine shack FB page I can send you a picture so you can print them I just printed some a couple months ago and the website was up but I've had several people say it's closed now. I apologize
I appreciate it thanks for your support...I do make my own charcoal I take a metal tin like the ones popcorn comes in around the holidays or something like that drill a small 1/8 inch hole in the center of the lid and then cut small American white oak or red oak will work as well but I prefer white oak logs about 2-3 inches in diameter you want smaller pieces then cut them even smaller kinda like 5-6 inch strips 1 -2 inchs wide fill the tin 1/3 full of the oak then put the lid on build a decent fire and put the tin on top of the fire and keep your fire going you will see smoke coming out the small hole on top of the tin eventually the smoke will stop when it does let it cool and check it if it's charcoal your good if not burn it again it will take several hours to burn it off it isn't a fast process but before you use it I break mine up into smaller pieces for more surface area and rinse well with water or your likker will be black 😂 you can also buy the hardwood lump charcoal online i believe but make shure it for filtering i only use it for grain based spirits not brandys because it will strip some flavor from them sorry for the long response hope this helps....Shine On
@@TheShineshack yes that helps a ton brother.. thanks taking the time to respond.. keep cranking out the videos brother.. they r awesome.. luv ur channel..
No not enough to pick em out 😂 that's a lot of extra work To get all the seeds out I've made a mash with just pure applesauce before and then whole crushed apples. And honestly I like the whole crust apples better
Great video, Red. I always enjoy them. This is a good recipe. Can’t wait to see the rest of part 2. Hey, what was that website to get the recipe sheets? I’ve been looking and I can’t find it.
The PT 2 is uploaded and you are exactly right I guess they deleted the website they use to have a UA-cam channel also (Moonshine How To)I just printed a bunch last month from there I will scan it today and send you the image and you can print them out
@@Fr.SarducciHey I Have copied the sheet message me on the Shine Shack Facebook page and I will send it to you it want let me post it in the comments here there is 4 to a sheet after printing you just cut them out
@@TheShineshack Hey, Red. My apologies. Got the flu on Thursday and I’m still nursing it. It’s not fun at all. Thank you so much. Here’s a problem, I don’t use Facebook or other social media like that. Is there a way to DM me or something? I’m not too proficient with technology 😃.
My dad wants to do blackberry. And since they aren't in season yet I'm going to have to use infusion with essential oils. But what grains would ve good to use for base?
Honestly I wouldn't use much grain you can do a sugar wash and add a few pounds of quick oats like you get at the grocery store it doesn't take much but oats really add mouth feel and smoothness and add a box of raisins like 1lb or so it comes out smooth like a brandy but I just posted a video about using extracts from olive nation they work great use a natural blackberry extract and keep adding it to your thumper and it should turn out great if you invert your sugar for your mash it also helps some every little thing helps also different yeast will produce different esters some fruity To help make your mash put off the impression of a Blackberry Brandy Mangrove jacks m02 is a good one that I recently found due to Christopher Conrad and I love it for a brandy
For a 20 gallon mash I would use 4-5 lbs not much oats are strong and carry over pretty well and 1 large box of raisins 1-2 lbs and I always do 2 lb sugar per gallon of water I don't go any higher it makes the Likker hot in my opinion
@TheShineshack ok well since I only have the bigger barrel I normally make a bigger batch which is why I want to find some smaller barrels. I can see the 58gal if I had a mark and digger size still. But they were a good price. I'm going to feed mill and see if they have steamed oats. But will probably end up with regular. Thanks for info
I don't like to do that because that's a large volume of 180°F -190°F water and once you add 30lbs of sugar to that water it not only makes it a lot heavyer but also makes it thick like a thin syrup and if an accident occurred and it got spilled on me it would stick to my skin like glue i always recommend mixing everything in the mash barrel instead of mixing it separately then dumping it in but sometimes you may have to do it separately just take extreme caution when doing so

we are home distillers we can do what we want lol

Hey Randy 👋 That's exactly right 😂 We don't have to follow TTB regulations

Do you have a link to the Moonshine How To website you print your notes from? I couldn't find it online.
I used an old waterbed mattress heater, it comes with a temp control. I wrapped it around the mash barrel and put a blanket around it. holds temp good
That's an awesome idea right there

I have a Muscatine mash with some grapefruit zest in it.
That should be really good I did a muscadine a few months back it was fantastic Muscadines are one of my favorite fruits on this earth 😂
I too am not a big sugar adding kind of fella....but when I do, I invert it to get rid of the "sugar bowl" taste that can be present.
Yep you are correct on that one I do invert the sugar sometimes myself all really depends on what I'm making and how much sugar I am planning to use if I'm not using more than a pound per gallon and I usually want invert it on my palette the difference between the two is very small but it's always good if you have time to invert every little thing adds up to make a quality product...Shine On

do the seeds from the apples effect flavor?
No not enough to pick em out 😂 that's a lot of extra work To get all the seeds out I've made a mash with just pure applesauce before and then whole crushed apples. And honestly I like the whole crust apples better
Cool... I'm going to try to get a barrel full of remnants from apple orchard when they press cider. That should make a great mash
It will definitely work go heavy though because a lot of flavor in the juice is taken out but it definitely works do 4-5 lbs per gallon of water
Enjoy the videos, what kind of discon factor And where did you get it at?
Thank you for watching them...I'm sorry I don't understand your question?
The liquid you sprayed to disinfect the buckets. What is the name of this stuff you using?

If not quick oats from the grocery store are steamed oats they work perfectly
I'm a newbie here, but why didn't you just melt the sugar in the hot water, then pour it in the cold fruit.
