The girls that couldn’t get into the Fall Out Boy suite so they settled for Dave Grohl and co. Foos, Mastodon, Josh Homme, Serj, Cee-Lo, I would’ve had the time of my life!
homme and hinds voices compliment eachother's nicely especially during the breakdown. i'm hoping homme invites him to guest on a new qotsa album in the future.
Why is everybody coming at them and saying this performance is shit? Have you 1) Tried to learn this song on any instrument 2) played live before 3) Sang AND played these complex riffs at the same time This performance was actually incredible. Energy was awesome, sounded just like the record.
OH MAN! THIS IS AWESOME! Mastodon and Josh Homme! And thats in a small venue! lucky bastards all of em! I would be freaking right out if I was in that audience.
that band is so loud, i saw them at this little place and literally thought the floor was going to open up in the middle of the room. so this small room was probably not the best for their sound anyways Brent's vocals are definitely improving, he usually sounds very hoarse live still, good for them to come this far, not fully into the new album but they've worked their ass off for years and deserve the recognition
if i remember right, there were 3 or 4 rooms of 'concert' things going on during the VMAs, with the foo fighters being one of the 'head' bands. i'm 99.999% sure that they are performing in the same room as the foo fighters were, since taylor hawkins touring kit is gretch. who evers concert room thing it was, absoloutley bad ass performance!!! love my some colony of birchmen!
I can't stand small performances like this. I want to see this song being performed on a massive stage with a legion of thousands before them. Not fucking girls in dresses standing with their arms to their sides! I AM CRYING RIGHT NOW
Hard to say. I saw them before winter and they played all of crack the skye, then for their encore, they played circle of cysquanche, mother puncher, aqua dementia, and blood and thunder. I have seen them play this in their set a couple times before that show though.
My Two Favorite Bands come together. Planets align. When I first heard the studio version I knew it was josh. Another of my faves is on this album to. Cedric from the Mars Volta is on the song siberian divide.
vincemaster, I know how you feel. I hate acting a bit like a music elitist but watching this it really makes me wonder if even one of those people know what they're witnessing. I'm so jealous.
Josh sounds awesome with Mastodon, they are so unlike other metal bands... They really have something to say. So does Qotsa in their context, both bands are after something... By the way I'm going to get me the drummer's shirt! Looks so cool!
They're both awesome in different ways, sure Blood Mountain is much more experimental but I thouroughly enjoy the energy of their early stuff. I'm a huge fan of both albums.2 different animals if you ask me.
who cares if they cant sing amazing. their music is amazing and their live show is even better. seen them twice going to see them again the 10th with kylesa and intronaut.
ROFL THEY WERE SOOOOOO BLAZED BEFOR DOING THIS SONG! I love mastodon and this is 1 of my fav songs but at 2:56 rofled all over the floor from his epic jizzing all over the crowd.
@ansem533 They can dance if they want to. They can leave their friends behind. 'cos you friends don't dance and if they don't dance then they ain't no friends of mine.
@zcornias Seeing it's him performing with a band on a song which he contributed to on the album version, there's probably stranger places he could be. A lecture on animal husbandry? That would be an appropriate time to say 'What is Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age doing there?'
@lionslicer9999 it because its Taylor Hawkins drum kit from the Foo Fighters, Dave Grohl invited Mastodon to play, so thats why they are using theit gear
It really isn't about much of anything. Its mostly a homage to the Genesis song "The Colony of Slippermen." Since the album is Brann Dailor's (drummer) favorite album of all time.
Exactly. It's not like Mastodon really need exposure from MTV... I'm not saying more exposure is a bad thing but honestly... look who is in the audience and tell me if they are *really* enjoying this or trying to look good for the cameras!
@ansem533 this song has got a pretty dance-able groove to it. just because it's a "metal" song doesn't mean you can't dance to it. what's wrong with dancing anyway? it's fun. try it, if you're too good for it.
Actually intimate, small gigs like this can be great. Big stadiums as glorious as they are, really separate the audience from the act and can make the performance really sterile.
@DrNick784 It wouldn't have been made. Brent said he just smoked a lot of pot while he was recovering and thought of the concept one day. I actually think he himself had an out of body experience while he was in a coma and the idea came from forgotten memories hahaha.
@slayerulz11 No video of it but yeah, Brent Hinds(lead guitarist, Singer) of mastodon got knocked out by the bassist of System of a Down and one of his friends. I think thats what you were talking about.
They were playing on the Foo Fighters drum set and amps because they (Foo fighters)were the house band at the VMA's.....it's not even brann's polka dotten drum set .
Everybody complains about the crowd but seeing as they're obviously not your standard metalheads and therefore not prone to moshing or headbanging they do actually get into the music a little. I mean, take one look at all the good-looking girls in the center who dig the music, who would'nt love that? I think they're thrilled to actually play this crowd as they'll get acceptance from a wider crowd and not just be "a metal band". Shame it's the same night Brent ended up in a coma.
All those cute chicks MTV got to stand in the front row had no idea that they were witnessing one of the greatest metal bands of all time.
And featuring Josh Josh Homme. Like don't they know we'll probably never see them perform together again!?
😂😂😂 Oh well!
The girls that couldn’t get into the Fall Out Boy suite so they settled for Dave Grohl and co. Foos, Mastodon, Josh Homme, Serj, Cee-Lo, I would’ve had the time of my life!
When I listened this song for the first time I thought "this sounds like QOTSA" now I can die in peace.
Josh Homme and Mastodon can't do no wrong
Josh Homme, Mastodon and Brent wearing a High on Fire shirt. This video just reached manly critical mass!
Homme's outro falsettos are so hypnotic.
QOTSA and Mastodon are definitely two of my favorite bands, I feel like this video was made just for me
1:04 cut my peanut
shredding riffs, screaming. all in front of beautiful women.
heaven.
My two favorite bands coming together for this banger
Goddamniit Josh you did it again and this ain't even your band. #SmoothSailingFromHereOnOut
Homme has such a great voice
homme and hinds voices compliment eachother's nicely especially during the breakdown. i'm hoping homme invites him to guest on a new qotsa album in the future.
Fucking awesome. Josh Home + Mastodon=....... Dammit
One of the best moments of rock music in the 2000's
Why is everybody coming at them and saying this performance is shit? Have you 1) Tried to learn this song on any instrument 2) played live before 3) Sang AND played these complex riffs at the same time
This performance was actually incredible. Energy was awesome, sounded just like the record.
Nah the vocals were pretty awful. Instrumentals were great though
Nah, the vocals were pretty great too. This is probably my favorite performance of this song.
Just an aside, those arent their usual amps and that isnt Branns kit.
@@Crysta1Pisto1 Brent was flat.
I concur. Saw Dethklok and mastodon recently for the first time. Was awesome indeed.
One of the best live performace of 'Birchmen...
OH MAN! THIS IS AWESOME!
Mastodon and Josh Homme!
And thats in a small venue! lucky bastards all of em! I would be freaking right out if I was in that audience.
This is the best video on the internet, period!!!
that band is so loud, i saw them at this little place and literally thought the floor was going to open up in the middle of the room. so this small room was probably not the best for their sound anyways
Brent's vocals are definitely improving, he usually sounds very hoarse live
still, good for them to come this far, not fully into the new album but they've worked their ass off for years and deserve the recognition
Mastodon + Josh Homme = perfect performance
dat high on fire shirt
By far, the best live performance of any Mastodon song I've seen.
these guys needa be more popular not enough people have heard the awesomeness of mastodon and its pissing me off!!
Esto fue lo último y lo mejor de MTV en vivo es una lastima. 12 años después lo sigo buscando
This is the best performance of Colony of Birchmen these guys have out there
Pure genius. All of their work. Genius.
awesome performance.
mastodon is fucking amazing.
way to good for MTV. :)
All you guys need to go to Vegas and we should have a Mastodon convention!!! I've never met a Mastodon fan that's half a fan as me.
Oh my god, you are brilliant.
Well said. Mastodon's music is the best shit out right now.
It's so weird seeing Brann with only one tom in his drumset.
I was thinking the same thing
IKR, and using a Gretsch drum kit instead of a Tama one. o.O
So amazing, love every second of it
Golden footage
Brann at 1:03 - I'm sure I saw a hint of a grin on his face. He's probably laughing at all the scenesters pretending like they know who Mastodon are!
if i remember right, there were 3 or 4 rooms of 'concert' things going on during the VMAs, with the foo fighters being one of the 'head' bands. i'm 99.999% sure that they are performing in the same room as the foo fighters were, since taylor hawkins touring kit is gretch.

Not fucking girls in dresses standing with their arms to their sides! I AM CRYING RIGHT NOW
great josh great mastodon
this song is amazing
what a great band
I love that Mastodon doesn't lean on their vocals. The guitars and drums are always louder.
Yep, I agree.
The vox are getting better live.
Josh has the best vocals
I saw them at rock city in nottingham. You have to see them live. Truly a fucking good experience.
vincemaster, I know how you feel. I hate acting a bit like a music elitist but watching this it really makes me wonder if even one of those people know what they're witnessing. I'm so jealous.
ONE BAD ASS BAND!!!!
Yeah you're the man!
This is fucking awesome! especially with josh being there...
@ChriZombie It's a High on Fire t-shirt, which makes it even more awesome.
I'd give any limb, nay, all of them, to see this collaboration live.
Josh sounds awesome with Mastodon, they are so unlike other metal bands... They really have something to say. So does Qotsa in their context, both bands are after something...
By the way I'm going to get me the drummer's shirt! Looks so cool!
@cerealkiller007 thank god... plus Josh Homme up there with the guys from Mastodon thats killer
Holy cow! Brann's drum config was so simple back then and he used a Gretsch kit.
I think they were sharing a kit with FF’s
What the fuck! The same Josh Homme on the vocals! IMPRESSIVE!
3:09 lady in front :DDD anyone find this incredible? definitely the band on the top of my list of who i want to see live the most
They're both awesome in different ways, sure Blood Mountain is much more experimental but I thouroughly enjoy the energy of their early stuff. I'm a huge fan of both albums.2 different animals if you ask me.
Josh Homme is everywhere man.
Apparently I live in the wrong place because wherever the hell they are Asian chicks dig Mastodon.
and a guitarist in the desert sessions and the guitarist for kyuss
who cares if they cant sing amazing. their music is amazing and their live show is even better. seen them twice going to see them again the 10th with kylesa and intronaut.
Aight josh homme is a genius and he was on the studio version as well
ROFL THEY WERE SOOOOOO BLAZED BEFOR DOING THIS SONG! I love mastodon and this is 1 of my fav songs but at 2:56 rofled all over the floor from his epic jizzing all over the crowd.
@ansem533 They can dance if they want to. They can leave their friends behind. 'cos you friends don't dance and if they don't dance then they ain't no friends of mine.
sorry i just made a comment with out noticing the million other you have gotten. but it's good to see you know now :D
ONE BAD ASS SONG!!!!
the shitty audience aside josh homme is one of my favorite musicians today and a splendid addition to this song.
All of them should be bowing down, Mastodon = gods.
LMFAO! I looked back and watched that and your definitly right. It looks like he's thinking "wtf are we doing here?"
You sir, have the right idea.
It really isn't about much of anything. Its mostly a homage to the Genesis song "The Colony of Slippermen." Since the album is Brann Dailor's (drummer) favorite album of all time.
Exactly. It's not like Mastodon really need exposure from MTV...

HOLY SHIT that boy is using a Yamaha SG! Rock on
Definitely not what I expected these guys to look like. These people don't even look like they know what band they're seeing.
all three of them look good to me
Yes, Mastodon are good friends of Josh Homme.
I SEE THEM IN 2 DAYS!!!!!!!!
i cant believe no one is headbanging!!!!
Josh Homme + Mastodon = Win
The crowd is like who the hell are these guys. Still. These guys are badass.
couldn't agree more
Actually intimate, small gigs like this can be great. Big stadiums as glorious as they are, really separate the audience from the act and can make the performance really sterile.
Yes, Josh Homme is from Queens of the Stone Age
ladys luv homme
epic drumming
Let me point out my favorite part of said "crowd" lol
0:57 - 1:01
It's never not funny lol
Perfecto
@EBMusicMan91 I know I saw them in saint louis me and the people were going crazy even when they weren't playing
Look at the video for "Blood and Thunder"
That's right, I only hope they don't attempt to become mainstream...
They were playing on the Foo Fighters drum set and amps because they (Foo fighters)were the house band at the VMA's.....it's not even brann's polka dotten drum set .
Yamaha SG 2000.. sweet lord
High On Fire T Shirt!.
Which is why MTV only aired about 30 seconds of that performance.
Everybody complains about the crowd but seeing as they're obviously not your standard metalheads and therefore not prone to moshing or headbanging they do actually get into the music a little.
