Battletech is something i dabbled with when i was a lot younger & have rediscovered mainly through your channel and more recently the black pants legion. Its a wonderful universe and for me up there with warhammer 40k. Keep up the excellent output chum
Thank you for doing this. I've followed Battletech since 1994, but I've just now recently really started looking into the rich backstory of the universe to really get a feel of what it would be like to live there.

Thanks for these quality uploads. I haven't been this into battletech since MechWarrior 4 was new. Refreshing my memory and learning new details has me not only wanting to read more of the books, but get back into writing my own battletech stories
I wanted something that could cover the most without being too massively in depth. This book which is a mash up of a few older titles like shattered sphere worked well for this task. I know the title doesn't actually fit the term brief but I think people will get the joke :) Galen cox looks so upset there doesn't he :D
Awesome video CR, thanks for making it! I shared your video with a friend who is just getting into Battletech; he is a long-time MW fan (not of MWO) and I just got him the HBS Battletech game. I recommended the 3025 mod to him once he completes the campaign and I think this video will be the perfect prelude to him beginning that career. P.S. I love how the brief history of the IS is 50 min long, it's very fitting. This universe has such a deep and rich lore to it! P.P.S. @@CriticalRocket That's fine. Maps are maps, and I've seen some pretty atrocious ones (meant to simulate medieval quality maps) in some of the books I've read. They're still helpful.

Yeah books like the age of war mentions this, but this is verbatim from the book "inner sphere at a glance" so anything there is something to bring up with the writers.
@@ineednochannelyoutube5384 Well there is first and second succession war sourcebooks now so one day I will go and tackle them, but as a general overview I think this works. Battletech is so dense, it is kind of impossible to cover everything the universe was built on.
Orbital bombardment was a common tactic in the earlier wars but it also led to entire planets being uninhabitable. Later on when technology was on a knife edge of tumbling into a dark age it was agreed that no one would use the tactic anymore. The only example after this was clan smoke jaguar orbitally bombarding Turtle bay and during the Jihad by the word of blake.
Well, even in today’s real world of satellite this and unmanned that and laser-guided other thing, if there were a high-intensity conventional war between combatants whose aim was to conquer and hold territory (as opposed to killing people to influence them and make money), it likely would not be resolved by air power alone.
Thanks, Critical Rocket. Fellow MechWarriors: do yourself a favour and put on Jon Everist's BattleTech score in the background while listening to Critical Rocket's narration. :) Edit: you can hear the opening track at joneverist.bandcamp.com/album/battletech-original-soundtrack and get all of the music through various ways (e.g., BattleTech Digital Deluxe Content DLC on Steam).
I was originally planning on using some of the HBS battletech music but though with the length of the video I would most likely be hit with claims by the owners and rightly so really. I am looking into maybe being able to use NIN's ghosts I-IV but need to clarify if those tracks are creative commons or not.
Agreed (on copyright). I'm guessing many of the people watching this video probably already have the BattleTech game, but for those who didn't, I wanted to at least point them towards the music. Actually, here's maybe a better link - joneverist.bandcamp.com/album/battletech-original-soundtrack (where people can listen to at least the opening track to get an idea of what I'm talking about, if they haven't heard the music yet).
I’m tellin ya, the history of the Inner Sphere is the Holy Roman Empire with giant stompy robots. When the Mongols (Clans) appeared in and conquered European areas (Inner Sphere), and often treated the conquered peoples with respect, some people began to believe the Mongols were descendants of Prester (Kerensky), and would usher in an Age of Enlightenment.
You're more right than you might realize. A couple years back, Jordan Weisman mentioned that the original BattleTech setting was specifically inspired by post-Roman Europe. True though I wouldn't be surprised if some people skip it because of the amount of time it takes to finish it.
