When I created Underground News in 1970, it was my response to injustice and the belief that I had a responsibility to uncover the lies that led us to the Vietnam War. The consequences of those lies affected an entire generation, leading to a conflicted and divided nation that left many feeling helpless. Our choices were to fight their wars, flee the country, or become activists. We became activists.
We weren’t the first to resist. My father returned from World War II in 1945, victorious in defeating fascism. Born two years later, I was raised with the belief that Americans had saved the world. Movies and television shows of the 50s and 60s urged us to become heroes, and above all else, we were programmed to never let this happen again. The burning question among my childhood friends was, “If you could’ve stopped Hitler and Mussolini would you have risked your life to do so?” There were many ‘what-if’ scenarios to consider. For me, this question became real when I had to choose which side to take during the Vietnam War.
The Underground News was a syndicated counter-culture broadcast television show originating in Chicago from 1970-1972. Underground was an anti-establishment outlet where various celebrities and activists like Jane Fonda, Daniel Ellsberg, Abbie Hoffman, & John Lennon could come on and speak their truth without being hassled. Life magazine dubbed us a ‘talk show for the earless,’ referring to ourselves and our long-haired guests. I was directing and co-producing nightly with my partner, investigative reporter and host, Chuck Collins, and together we earned a reputation as “responsible radicals” by many local columnists and reporters.
Fifty years later, American fascists, led by President Trump, have attacked our Capital and the nation is now holding its breath as we anticipate their next move. We are all hearing warnings of imminent attacks on our government institutions and questions concerning the infiltration of our local police and sheriff departments, military, and government agencies. The vulnerable among us are being manipulated, causing confusion and distrust in one another and suspicion of all media. Who do we trust now?
Antifa- a word that means anti-fascist. A meme that combines all of the past movements to free endangered people from the tyranny of authoritarian rulers. If you need an example of what fascism looks like here in America, look no further than a 400 year-old history of racism which has left millions to fend for themselves in a white culture that rarely looks beyond its own privilege.
I have always been a curious soul who asks probing questions simply because I want to know how things work and the motivation behind them. This led me to a career in broadcasting so I could do just that. It is my obligation to bring you a new interview I did with an Antifa activist with a long history of involvement in the movement. He is the real deal and presents an unabashed view of where he is and where we are in this crucial moment of volatility and change. My intention is to offer missing information and provide an insider view and history of a world that many of us don’t completely understand.
This is the first of a series of new interviews that reflect what I’ve learned over the past fifty years since Underground News first aired. Stay tuned...

Why would you want to die at all? If you die you really can't support your side anymore
