I understand where your coming from with Autonomy. I see it as their number one goal being asserting/maintaining their own autonomy. With that being the number one goal, the greatest fear is someone else controlling you. What better way to prevent that, than by asserting your autonomy over everyone else? In general, I think Sanderson enjoys flipping our initial assumptions about the nature of a Shard on it's head. The other example I can think of is how Preservation thought TLR was his greatest creation because he kept everything the same for so long.
