This car is selling by the millions here in LA. Suddenly all these high rollers are trading in their BMWs and Mercedes and buying the 2015 Genesis. And for good reason, I heard the AWD transmission on the 2015 Genesis is one of the best in this class.
UltimateDriver Hyundai's exceed most Japanese brands in terms of quality and reliability. Hyundai is actually a huge company that makes advanced army tanks and fighter jets.
This is the BEST automotive show on the inter-tubes! Brian Cooley is blunt, snarky and precise :), dude knows his stuff. OnCars is pure substance while everything else is soap-opera! CNET increase Brian's budget... how about a tear-down or factory visit... oh yeah!
rope rider It amazes me how people get so attached to badges and "rally around the flag". It's like the Chevy, Ford and Dodge pickup truck idiots trying to insult each other by making infantile jokes. It's easy for a company to build an image, then cut production costs, while still raking in profits from their name.
This is an absolutely insane deal if you buy this car used. It's well under $36,000 in the V8 form and under $30,000 for the V6. Throw in the standard Hyundai warranty and it's easy one of if not the best deal you can get on a car with this level of luxury.
Great review on the new Genesis Brian. All the reviews so far seem to be consistent. Recommending it a sure buy. Yes it has some minor issues, but over time they will get worked out or addressed during this generations design cycle.
I'll be frank. The new Genesis looks great, and it's a steal for all the tech you get. Unfortunately, it's a Hyundai. Not that it's a bad thing, but from my PoV, they still have an image problem. Which is a shame because I've seen the newer Hyundais and they are far better than their predecessors.
To me it's been the name, it doesn't roll off the English speaking tongue well, or at least not how you think a car makers would. A name change wouldn't be unheard of, Datsun changed to Nissan, Benz got the Mercedes. Logo kinda looks like a knock off Honda logo, that's what I thought it was when I was little and saw it for the first time.
D13H4RD2L1V3 Fair comment, and in full disclosure I work at a Hyundai dealership. I think part of the reason to not rebrand or worry about association with image is the fact that, for those in the know, Hyundai is a top tier company with top tier products now. Nothing makes a bigger contrast than being able to compare one variable only. In this model year, a phrase that I have seen before frequently comes up: "Pick performance or pretense". At any rate, active conversation about cars is the best. Cheers to all, and I challenge you to go for a test drive of a new Hyundai vehicle if you have any doubts.
If I was in the Market for a luxury sedan, I would definitely consider this....Yeah, it doesn't have the prestige of other luxury brands but it's beautiful inside and out and makes you feel special which is the essence of owning a luxury car. I'm still waiting for Hyundai to finally grow the balls to launch their luxury division, which would make spending this kind of money on a Hyundai justifiable but I don't know why everyone is complaining about it being a knock off. Technically every car stole design elements from other cars and those who try to be different end up looking ugly (I'm looking at you Acura). Mark my words, when Hyundai finally differentiates Genesis from Hyundai, it WILL sell more than Acura. Hell, it might even creep up on Infiniti if they do it right
The Genesis seems to be in a similar position to the original LS400 back in the late 80s. Nobody exactly wants to take it seriously because of the manufacturer behind it. It has a lot going for it though so it`s likely to succeed if people stop looking at Korean cars with the classic stereotypes and give them a chance
At 17:37 what mount is that for the windshield to hold the phone? I'm in the market for one and it looks clean and like it's universal. That would be great so I don't have to buy a new one when I get a new phone. Please help CNET or UA-camrs. Thanks
What is up with the horizontal lines (interlacing) on this video? Is this just me? It's very distracting, and strange for a video that's ostensibly in 1080p.
I don't know what Adblue is, but here in Europe we have a LOT of diesel cars and no one ever has to fill up with anything else than diesel. We don't even have the place to put it. Is this a US only thing?
In Europe manufacturers such as Renault, Peugeot, Citroën, Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, Mercedes Benz, GM / Opel, Ford, Toyota and Mazda are implementing Adblue into their cars. It just starts to become more common. And lol at the guy suspecting that the US have stricter emission standards.

I'd get one- if I had over $50,000 lying around. Badge means nothing to me (well, except for Chrysler and GM, never), and the most important criteria here is the boring, overlooked one- safety. Top IIHS scores, good on the murderous small overlap, superior on the frontal- on the test crash vid, this thing takes the frontal like few else, only BMW and Benz were also 5 star for this size rear drives.
The Genesis V6 is 400lbs lighter...!? I assume the transmission and muchof the drivetrain is the shared between the two, so what the hell is up with that V8? Is it made of uranium or something?
also everyone saying Hyundai is junk i agree like 10 years ago it was but its not any more they have proven themselves to make good cars and ranked the 4th largest car maker in the world according to Forbes, the cars have scared other car makers to making good looking well built cars with tons of tech for a low price.. so everyone quit your whining and try one.
Even if Hyundai builds best cars in the world. For their early shattered credit to rise up. It needs more effort than this, furthermore they need to sort out their fuel efficiency whilst not compromising riding quality. Simply put it. Their eyes are looking at wider world, their minds are still stuck in Korea
Also, what they don't talk about is how cheaply Hyundais are made... they save the money in the structure of the car... Ever feel the weight of a Hyundai sonatas doors? Compare that to a BMW or even a Honda Accord.
he said the cost of the def was $15 per gallon, i was saying thats crazy expensive, costs way less in canada which is weird as most stuff costs way more here
I'm don't understand, he made it sound at the beginning that hyundai is leading in engineering and tech in some way when all I see is a 40k interior with a v8 in it costing total over 50k... I'm co fused why a lexus is 350 even with the F sport pack for low mid 40s wouldn't be bought over this.. wait they are.. I see f sport is everywhere and I rarely see a genesis and if it is one it's a v6..
Lexus GS350 actually starts at $48,600...not "low mid 40s". The Genesis V6 starts at $38k. That's a $10k difference. Yes, the Genesis V8 version is over $50k, but it's a V8 and more powerful/better performance than a GS350. Plus the Genesis is classified as a Large car, the GS is classified as a Midsize. The Genesis has bigger exterior, interior and trunk volume space and weighs at least 500lbs more than the GS. It also carries much more standard equipment and amenities than the GS. Your comment is like saying why would anyone buy a Camry when you can get a Corolla for cheaper.
That study about newer cars = fewer deaths sounds problematic. Obviously people who buy newer cars are older and can afford it, as opposed to younger folks who buy older cars. Did the study take this into account and compare people within a certain age group? If not then I'd be willing to bet the result wouldn't be so dramatic. I don't think these safety features make THAT big of a difference for accidents.
Who would buy this car? A Frugal guy that wants a nice luxury car, who doesn't care about showing off a brand pedigree, and who'd wait a year to buy it used. The depreciation of these things is enormous. The Germans make really nice cars (I'm obsessed with the Audi A8 and the 2014 S-Class), but as a younger guy, I'd rather buy something practical and invest the money saved. It could buy me an s-class someday.
Yes, it's incredibly impressive. As soon as you get behind the wheel it feels unlike any Hyundai and speaks to me better than an Acura or Lexus. I forgot it was a Hyundai until I looked at the beautiful logo, it's powerful, confident, rolls over anything smoothly and is absolutely quiet! I was very pleased
It was the 3.8 AWD, being the first AWD Hyundai they pulled it off nicely, helped roll the power through the gears and felt sportier than I thought but still luxurious which many people don't experience from Hyundai sadly.
I test drove the 5.0 today and to be honest it was a great experience it made me feel like I was driving something more European kinda felt like a 7 Series or a more sporty lexus ls it has everything you can want and need In a car the power was definitely there it's very torquey and under the hood the engine look good you really have to see the car in person lots of details that you probably wouldn't see in the video
I've used to park for nearly 4 years without parking assist and now i can AT LEAST rely on parking sensors for a far more direct parking tham before :) For the cars which has a high back trunk which can make the visibility limited - this technology helps you to park in the front of smaller cars which you can't see by the back windshield due to it's height.
that crashing test is a silly test.. rubbish.. of course all car will take serious damage after hitting that massive impact.. either you have safety futures it will not guaranty you're still safe.. sometimes safety features will get you into accident too.. some are confident because they thought that they have better safety features in their cars so they drive unsafe on the roads.. the bottom line, safe driving is still the best thing to do, be responsible driver..
Hyundai has come a "long way" in a short time. BMW has come a long way too. It took BMW nearly 70 years till they had a decent car that got any respect. I remember when BMW's were boxy, cheap looking and chuck full of 4's (3 series still are) and small inline 6's. BMW's were the size of a 1st gen Honda Accord or smaller. I wouldn't talk about BMW like it has ALWAYS been great. It wasn't. History lesson for you youngsters born after 1980.
There are various way a car can be shape even with the u.s regulations and laws. The fact that this grill resemble audi's grill is very copylike i would say. Hyndai have its own signature grill, why not use that?
+TheRoyalking761 You're the one who brought up knock offs. 60 grand and Acura can't even find a real tree to use. Furthermore, that two screens idea is a terrible one, as it only splits your attention further when you should be driving. Much of the information presented is redundant. What's worse is that one of them is low resolution, with very outdated graphics. P-AWS is nothing to write home about, as other manufacturers have done similar things in the past (like Infiniti), then stopped because no one cared and the benefits were minimal at best. Then there's the fact that it's FWD, while everything else in the flagship lux segment is RWD or full-time AWD. And despite the benefits of Honda's ACE body structure, they still haven't figured out how to add a panoramic roof to any of their cars, unlike so many others. And where's the V8? The turbo- or superchargers? These things are no longer Honda's expertise. Sales number show RLX on the decline, below the Equus all summer. The Genesis has far outsold the TL.
The Genesis is a "luxury car" for people who don't want to spend $60,000 on a luxury car and don't care what anyone thinks. If I lived in Alaska, all alone, I could use one of these with AWD and be completely satisfied. ...but I'd still rather have a Charger SRT/ 300SRT or Jeep SRT... Sorry...
TheRoyalking761 lol, sounds like you're the one who's butthurt. Replying with petty name calling to simple facts is both pathetic and indicative of one's own deficiencies. The simple truth is that the Genesis and Equus provide far more luxury than anything Honda has ever made. They can't even spread Acura past North America, meanwhile Hyundai's products are global. Deal with it.
JDubbs07 The fact that you only can point out one of its minor flaws was a piece of wood shows that you were highly offended. Who would buy a hyundai over a Acura or anything of that mater just look at the comments
aka4love I'm sorry to break the bad news to you, but Hyundai is in the lead...look it up , I traded my BMW750LI for a 2015 4door genesis and I have no regret, I havnt even thought about my BMW....I find myself looking out my house windows just looking at a beautiful machine and going into a daze
That's my opinion, I love the car' Genesis' I definitely would'nt trade it back for a bmw by a long shot, The genesis has way mor features and safer than my old 750 and looks 10 times better and 75% cheaper to maintain, I'm pretty sure it's allot of people on youtube would agree, On the other hand, from what I read on your post you never owned a genesis so you wouldnt know..no disrespect it's just my opinion
Total BS on how likely you are to die if you drive an older car. Nowhere does the study take into account what you are driving and what you run into. You can be driving a 20-year old Crown Vicky, or a brand new Scion IQ, and if you get hit by a Mack truck, the end result will be the same.
Cooley is the best...blah blah blah...we know this. Genesis looks like an audi with a different vag...I meant badge. I will never own a Hyundai. ..sorry. good vehicles. .but never
Except for Lexus, all these cars would break down and you would have to spend $5000+ repairing them. That's why European luxury cars have lower resale rates
Why on Earth someone would buy this car is beyond me. *Remember, this is the same car company that was building absolute junk just 7-8 years ago (Not exactly known for reliability). There's a reason that Hyundai MUST offer a 10-year warranty because otherwise, they wouldn't be selling cars to consumers. --The obvious notation being that Hyundai has branded this "Genesis", rather than their own brand on the hood/badging on the overall car. Why would they market it this way? Are they worried that the people who actually buy these things don't want to explain that they bought a $50,000 Hyundai??
people are so uptight about cars....All you need is something to take you from point A to point B...regardless of the brand...I have this car and I traded a 2010 BMW 5 series for it....Now what ?
One of the best cars reviewers out there. Good job as always) And a very nice car! Hyundai was mentioned as one of the most reliable car manufacturers of 2014, and Genesis was a winner among premium sedans
I have a 2011 hyundai genesis with tech package. It's amazing as its a great value, not many on the road and no one knows if its a bmw, mercedes or lexus. It rides amazing and has a great interior. This one is just that much better!
I have a 2010 Hyundai Genesis 4.6, I love my vehicle even though it's 10 years old in the year 2020, I will never sell it. These vehicles are built to last. The reliability is a Ten. I am think about buying this one a 2015 the last year before, Hyundai Genesis became separate. 2016 and after the brand Genesis is its own entity. The luxury division of Hyundai. The models they offer are G70,G80,G90 , and GV80. I drove this 2015 Genesis. The ride is awesome. The suspension is designed by Lotus tuning, gorgeous exterior, and interior.
@mackfar27 I actually brought the Genesis G90 5.0 Htrac Ultimate. Awesome vehicle reliability is a 10, I have the V8 model. The 2023 Genesis G90 doesn't offer the V8 anymore as an option. Awesome car, though none the less. Love naturally aspirated engines, especially V8. It's a 2017 Genesis G90, and it was brought during the pandemic.
Brian is the best reviewer in the biz, hands down. He won't tell you how slow your new Toyota or Nissan is because he is one of the only guys who understand that people don't buy Toyota's or Nissan's for drag strip racing. People buy cars like that for mpg. Every knothead who reviews cars will tell you how slow your car with the 1.8 engine is. DUH!
I don't know if I buck the standard of deaths in older trucks, but the only two accidents I've had in were rollovers in mid to late 80's foreign mini trucks. On the last one, an 86 toyota pickup, I launched the truck going at least 50mph, landed on the nose, broke the seat belt, bent the steering wheel, broke the epoxy that holds the steering mounts together and shoved it off them, launched the windshield out with the dash cam attached, continued over, and ended up on the roof. The cab was more or less intact while upside down, and only bent far enough to break the drivers door window, jam the door, and crush the roof down to prevent the seat from tilting forward after it was rolled back onto it's wheels. The only injury that lasted more than a day I had was that I jammed my hip pretty badly when my knee hit the dashboard, I'm planning to put an external roll cage on the truck I have now, a 93 dodge dakota, but I also am hoping not to crash this one...
I saw a 5.0 the other day, it had smoked headlights and a winged badge at the back though, all stock, and it was a beauty!

German car makers should start taking notes and start watching their backs. Looks like Hyundai is starting to become a force to reckon with
No matter how luxury it is, it's still a Hyundai.

I will say the new hyundai genesis does not have a bad angle. Especially the quad exhaust looks the best.

This is one cool dude. I love this show!!
what episode does he say "UGLY is included at no extra cost?"
Believe me, this has been my life quest since two years ago
Anas Malas Mine too :D

Epic car show, this needs to be televised. That's it I'm giving you your own network cnet
With all the cameras, sensors and radar built into most new cars, it wouldn't take much for car manufacturers to build in dashcam funtionality.
did anyone notice that Brian's cuff button on his shirt looks like a manual transmition? ;)
I saw that as well
This car looks amazing. One of the fellow guards at my job got one. Nice looking car
it seems the koreans have come a long way.
I love this show
Why weren't any of the kei jidōsha cars mentioned? Many max at 63hp but are well below 1000cc.
msrp is 56k but invoice price is always around 46-50k. this car is a bargain. not too many eight cylinders for under 60k.
That is one fantastic looking car
They should make "genesis" an upscale brand kinda like lexus, toyota and scion. So them there would be genesis then Hyundai and kia
Is that a saab 9-3 convertible in the background at 16:00
That is a nice looking Hyundai.. Def on my short list too
Then why don't car makers make dashcams an option I mean the car already has a bunch of cameras why not add another one and have those features
That's the same idea I was thinking.......
I just drove this car... I'm in love

ouch $15 a gallon for def in canada at the truck stop i go to its $0.89 per liter or $3.36 canadian per us gallon or $2.57 american dollars per gallon

Glad to hear, Jonny Draken. Was it the 3.8L or the 5.0L model?
It was the 3.8 AWD, being the first AWD Hyundai they pulled it off nicely, helped roll the power through the gears and felt sportier than I thought but still luxurious which many people don't experience from Hyundai sadly.
I test drove the 5.0 today and to be honest it was a great experience it made me feel like I was driving something more European kinda felt like a 7 Series or a more sporty lexus ls it has everything you can want and need In a car the power was definitely there it's very torquey and under the hood the engine look good you really have to see the car in person lots of details that you probably wouldn't see in the video
If you need parking assistance in a car you shouldn't have a driving licence.
I've used to park for nearly 4 years without parking assist and now i can AT LEAST rely on parking sensors for a far more direct parking tham before :)
For the cars which has a high back trunk which can make the visibility limited - this technology helps you to park in the front of smaller cars which you can't see by the back windshield due to it's height.
My mom has a silver one
that crashing test is a silly test.. rubbish.. of course all car will take serious damage after hitting that massive impact.. either you have safety futures it will not guaranty you're still safe.. sometimes safety features will get you into accident too.. some are confident because they thought that they have better safety features in their cars so they drive unsafe on the roads.. the bottom line, safe driving is still the best thing to do, be responsible driver..
Volvo makes d3
No car company in the market is unique these days for example the front of this car looks like an Audi
***** That's because the US has a lot of laws that dictate how a vehicle has to be styled, for safety reasons of course.
There are various way a car can be shape even with the u.s regulations and laws. The fact that this grill resemble audi's grill is very copylike i would say. Hyndai have its own signature grill, why not use that?
***** If you want to express luxury, would you use Audi's grill or their own?
***** Which shouldn't surprise you, because Peter Schreyer is Kia-Hyundai's head designer, who has worked for Audi and Volkswagen.
***** I would probably say it looks more Aston Martin
The Genesis has far outsold the TL.
google glass...
I'd get his 25 year old wagon instead
RAGHAV BHATIA 27 year old actually. It has lasted almost 3x longer than the average car on US roads. Now that's maintenance and care!
Damn right my friend XD
It would be a nice car to rent, but not neccesarily own.
I'd rather drive a Genesis and be a little cheaper and more reliable than a Mercedes and it break everyday
Sorry...
bigtruckseriesreview Because a Charger totally competes with a Genesis. This comment was clearly written by someone without a brain, specifically you.
You don't know jack shit about driving.
bigtruckseriesreview Ouch, you're not even smart enough to come up with an actual response. Your family must be disappointed.
You're Chinese so STFU
Asian Drivers...nuff said
I would be driving of this car only if drunk.
The Genesis is a joke. Its a Knock Off of everything.
It's a far better premium product than anything Honda's putting out these days. Little known fact- the wood detailing in the $60k+ Acura RLX is FAKE.
JDubbs07
Tell me something I don't know you buthurt maggot.
JDubbs07
The fact that you only can point out one of its minor flaws was a piece of wood shows that you were highly offended. Who would buy a hyundai over a Acura or anything of that mater just look at the comments
You'll have to be stupid to buy Hyundai Genesis 5.0. The competition offers way more for the same price.
No they don't
aka4love I'm sorry to break the bad news to you, but Hyundai is in the lead...look it up , I traded my BMW750LI for a 2015 4door genesis and I have no regret, I havnt even thought about my BMW....I find myself looking out my house windows just looking at a beautiful machine and going into a daze
Then I'm afraid you don't know cars. Ask a car enthusiast and he will tell without a doubt BMW 750li is the better choice in quality and performance.
I will never own a Hyundai. ..sorry. good vehicles. .but never
Buy a used Lexus, Mercedes, Audi, or BMW for less
Are they worried that the people who actually buy these things don't want to explain that they bought a $50,000 Hyundai??
genesis is a nice car but its kind of like buying a chinese rolex. works pretty much just as good but its not the real thing
But it is
people are so uptight about cars....All you need is something to take you from point A to point B...regardless of the brand...I have this car and I traded a 2010 BMW 5 series for it....Now what ?
The fact that you owned a 5 series shows you're just like everyone else.
One of the best cars reviewers out there. Good job as always)
And a very nice car!
Mr. T, did you ever purchase the 2015 Genesis?
@mackfar27 I actually brought the Genesis G90 5.0 Htrac Ultimate. Awesome vehicle reliability is a 10, I have the V8 model. The 2023 Genesis G90 doesn't offer the V8 anymore as an option. Awesome car, though none the less. Love naturally aspirated engines, especially V8. It's a 2017 Genesis G90, and it was brought during the pandemic.
Volkswagen Passat is WAY better.
Not the same class as the genesis and the passat just doesn't have the styling to make it stand out anymore
