- Ukraine appears to have used the US-supplied Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) smart bomb for the first time in the war. A Russia-installed official in Donetsk says the Ukrainian military dropped a bomb equipped with the JDAM guidance kit near Bakhmut. The US-made bomb was allegedly dropped to test the possibility of employing it from Soviet-made aircraft. Experts say the JDAM-ER would give Ukraine the same range as M31 rockets fired by HIMARS, but with a warhead up to 10 times the size.
Meanwhile, a US official said that Ukraine is likely receiving the best fuses, which will enhance the bomb’s capability. A 226 kg JDAM-ER bomb with a DSU-33 radar fuse, set to explode 20 feet above the ground, would be like a wrecking ball, as per a US official.

I keep seeing people saying the US is "testing" weapons in Ukraine, but the JDAM was developed in 1997 and used extensively in Iraq and Afghanistan. HIMARS has a similar history. Most of these things aren't new. We're just watching the Russians struggle against them, just like the Iraqi Army and Taliban did.

JDAM used in Ukraine is now a glided JDAM, traditional JDAM doesn't work because bomber aircraft can't get near the battlefield.
Crux made a mistake by stating that the the JDAM has twice the range of the GLSDB. The GLSDB has a range of 150km.
It is a trade-off. The GLSTP has a 250 pound warhead with a range of 150 km. A Mark 84 2000 pound bomb with the special kit has a range of 80 km. Which is better? It depends. If you have a clear path to the target having supressed all enemy defense systems, either one would work. If you want to avoid civilian casualties, then the GLSDB might be better.
JDAM : the range depends mainly on the altitude of the launcher, which of course in not the case for GLSDB..."Twice the range", by dropping à which height ?
@@florentleider222 again, depends on how much you have superseded air defenses. If you haven’t, then your attack altitude will be 100 to 200 feet, and the range will be zero. Otherwise, launch from 50000 feet for max range.

It would appear that any target in the Crimea is now a viable one. ...even a certain bridge. If the JDAM-ER kit really costs only $25k then it can become a real game changer. Now Ukraine definitely needs more fighter/attack aircraft to deliver lots of these.

Only one problem - HIMARS launcher would need to be in Crimea itself to reach the bridge.
The JDAM-ER is supposed to have a max range of @80km. To launch one at the bridge would require a Ukrainian jet to be either over Russian held territory or way out over the Blacks Sea.

HIMARS was a game changer. It pushed back Russian logistics & forced them into a protracted artillery dual with an economically inferior opponent. No more could they just, like, *have* those 40km long convoys, anymore, like in the beginning. It changed the war, ie: the "game."
That said... no, I don't think JDAM is going to be as impactful as HIMARS. Similarly ranged, it fails to gives the Ukrainians a substantively new capability. What it does do, tho? It further blunts Russian offensive potential by increasing the lethality of the Ukranian air force. Especially since the Ukrainians already have HAARMS, & will prolly be pairing these systems together.
It'll force Russian commanders to choose between exposing their AA to getting vaporized, or their forward positions getting pasted. Possibly both, & in any case the JDAM system by itself can seriously disrupt the already bloody, grinding tactics we're seeing used at Bahkmut.
All of these "game changers" being trotted out and the game hasn't changed.
Just a few notes. The process people are quoting for the JDAM are for the standard version. The ER variant would be more, but to put it into perspective, you should still get two of these for the cost of a javelin. All US mk 80 series bombs can be used, from 500-2000 pounds. Finally, the guidance was developed in America, but the ER kit was developed by Boeing Australia with the Australian Airforce as a partner.

Not mentioned in the video unless I missed it, but these JDAMs that convert "dumb bombs" are both incredibly cheap and the inventory is enormous. If this becomes a primary weapon, you can almost forget about ammunition shortages and Ukraine would be getting soooo many more bombs for the same amount of money.
Maybe only very slight drawback is that I don't think bombs larger than about 1000lbs are supported but compared to what Ukraine is now using, it's a big step up.
If manned aircraft can effectively use the JDAM from outside the effective range of Russian S-300 and these are too heavy to be carried by a TB-2, then I'd consider a small number of West donated manned aircraft to Ukraine. But first things first which is to prove that the JDAM can be used effectively.

It is shocking to see the first time. Anyone would see that and say "that's a nuke of some sort!", but it's high explosive and good engineering.

Tony Su, I agree with everything you said, but the only thing I would add is that this weapon is so incredibly accurate that you can reduce the size of bombs attached to it. You don't need to destroy an entire city block to eliminate a single building and everybody in it. Thus, you only kill the intended targets and the next-door neighbors live happily ever after. In fact, you can select the bomb size based on how much you need to destroy in a single shot. Because Russian weapons are so inaccurate, they need to take the opposite approach - they need to carpet-bomb a football field in hopes of hitting someone on the mid-field line and even then, they mostly fail to hit the intended target.
Sources to back up such an outlandish claim? Even a British foreign legion fighter in Bakhmut said that Russian artillery has better ISR than they do. Don’t believe me? Just search for it.

In the Gulf war when the attack started the Americans dropped a series of the BLU-109 900kg bombs from a B52 on a dug in Iraqi defensive position covering the flank, after the strike they didn't even send reconnaissance to make sure the position was neutralised.

The primary reason Bahkmut is considered important is because it's important to the Russians. Taking it has no long term strategic goals, but since Kharkiv & Kherson the Russians need a victory. It's not a bomb it's a guidance system that can be attached to a variety of "dumb" munitions. In this case Ukraine chose to pair it with a 2000 lb. gravity bomb.

Nope. Few reasons. Firstly, the detonation. That ain't no mortar. You'd see a small fragmentation round go off then a secondary detonation. Not just one big boom from nothing.
Glad you are not in charge of strategy....one detonation only....the clue is in the footage....ammo dump explosions are not one single event.....a lot of pyrotechnics follow the initial hit.

The JDAM's I was familiar with could be launched from 60 miles away from the target. The ones they have now can be launched from 120-plus miles away. Those bombs are accurate to about a meter. All GPS and have a multitude of different applications. Above/below ground...no problem. Big boom every time.
The aerodynamic surfaces deploy as soon as the bomb drops from the plane and then, "glides" itself right onto your lap.
Bad to the bone...but not to worry, you won't have any left if one goes off near you.
Great videos of us using them in Afghanistan on UA-cam. The guys on the ground talk about it as they wait 3 minutes from the time it's launched to hit the target. They drop 8 of them on a compound and they obliterate the place in a few seconds. And they OBLITERATE the place. It's scary to watch.

Bomb tossing is generally inaccurate, unless you put a guidance system on the bomb. Tossing a 2000 lb bomb will always make a mess where it landsm and JDAM ensures it lands where is has the most effect..

Why do people not read why the bomb drops far before its on their target. The plane literally throws it and leaves making anti air try to lock on it but it doesnt matter as its still far and the plane is already escaping. The anti air missile would be faster but the long distance makes it hard to get something if its already running away and also fast.

The 500lb bomb is yhe second smallest gravity bomb normally used by the US. It is also the most commonly used gravity bomb used by the US. We've dropped them by the thousands thru out history

If the Russians thought the HIMARS were a MF'er, wait til they get a load of the JDAM's in all their glory. I think these would probably be better served for the counter offensives in the north and/or southeast (Melitopol/Mariupol) in smashing the fortifications and trenches the Russians have built up not to mention other high value targets near the front lines. Hopefully we have supplied them with enough to properly bring the thunder
