Very impressive, but how does a person start learning this? Every example I see moves to complex rhythms within 2 minutes.

It's all maths, but the beauty of it is you don't need to understand it
to feel it, if you feel a change overwhelm you see the errors idiocies
or weirditudes that popped into your consciousness or your spontaneous
play and see if another more restricted exercise is adaptable from your experience
      of the given examples.
      Very abstract, I know.

It is funny that the rhythmic system "Konakol" from South India has excisted for ages, and I don`t know anyone, who has had the idea to make an instructional video. Thank you Henrik!!!!

incredible method henrik, you have put it in such an amazing way that can relate it in a contemporary context.thank you.
the polyrhythms part is a bit hard at the moment to visualise in grid.hopefully the book explains it further.
    cheers!

The konnakol in 5/4 is composed by me and I used it in a modern dance act. The female voices are the dancers witch picked it up very fast. I participated in that show as well with 3 months intensive training. I will put out some clips from that show as soon as I get a copy of the video of Caterpillar from the company

The music is composed by me and its from a 2006 danceperformance that I actally participated in:
"Caterpillar" - you´ll find a video by the same name on my UA-cam account - Containing a live performance of that music. The other voices are the 4 dancers..
The tune is set in 5/8 with a calimba to keep the thala :-)

this would make an excellent warmup/practice regimen for more technical rapping. great way to build fast flow.

Fantastic. I have a feeling one could use number theory and come up some mind-blowing konnakol compositions.

The music from the beginning is from a Danceshow. One of my compositions in 5/4

    Its about grouping the triplets in 7 (7 × 3 regrouped to 3 × 7)
The thing to do is learn the langauge of konnakol so you are able to sing these phrases and understand the transformations in this example = Do the exersice the other way around : Keep the clapping ( 2+2+3) as a constant and sing the transitions. Good luck

  • @StringsOfAndersen
    @StringsOfAndersen  13 років тому

Halfspeed, triplets, A tempo, triplets, dobbelt speed, triplets (tisra) etc...
It actually sez so in the video during this exersice, in therms of 2:1 & 3:2 etc :)

Hi M34. If you purchase my 3 books "Shortcut To Nirvana" you will get an idea about the basic theory in south indian music + lots of exercises.
The words are "the langauge" and what you do with them is up to your imagination
Even though that "ThaKaDhime" means 4 - you can strech that sound to fit 5,6,7,8,9 etc
Maby it sounds abstract, but if you know the basics, it should make sence :)

I have never released this peice of music. It is from a dance performance
(But you can find a video on my UA-cam profile "Music for danceperformance" where the whole corvai is performed live)

can u please explain what are the variations you are depicting while doing the 7 beat cycle.. 2+2+3
im unable to understand it explicitly as i can understand the first exercise..

  • @StringsOfAndersen
    @StringsOfAndersen  13 років тому

It is wonderfull is it not ? :)
What I do to communicate with musicians is write out all the changing meters:
    could be f.ex : 5/8 + 5/8 + 6/8 + 7/8 + 9/8 ... When they can play their part well - I ask them to feel and understand "the whole thing" in 4/4

I am lost immediately at the 7 beat cycle polyrhythm study.
I don't understand the logic behind how and when to do the tapping and how it connects with something like 4:1, or the like.
Is this material available in printed form for NON-geniuses like myself
    Regards,
    Geoff J
