Great stat. Anither good one is if you took away all Gretzky's goals (all time leader in goals) hed still be the all time leader in NHL points on assists alone
This might sound really simplistic, but my solution would be to make sure your "Superstar" players can play on both sides of the puck. That way they are still useful and can contribute with less ice time. If you put Crosby on the 4th line for 10 minutes of ice time, he can still help his team, or at the very least he doesnt hurt them. At least thats been the typical approach a long time now with Team Canada
It’s weird cause it it’s not like they didn’t take any young studs. They took a couple but left a couple off. Then left some of the older guys off. It’s weird. You’d think they wanted to go old but still cut some of the better older guys
People tend to forget that each year Canada usually has at least a couple of players that are age eligible to partake in the tournament but whose respective NHL clubs will not release them. Last year Bedard could have played in the tournament again. So just ponder that, because it means that for some years-many of them-Canada’s team does not contain its potentially top scoring U20 players. It also points to the fact that - rather than view Canada as slipping in Hockey prowess - our guys are actually good to the point they wind up playing in the NHL at age 19, and therefore cannot take part in that years tournament.
Well done, Rob! You deliver amazing hockey content consistently. People know your name all over the globe. I’d say that’s a remarkable accomplishment given that you missed out on your pro hockey career. The backup plan worked out quite well. Thanks for your authenticity bro. 🤘🏽
Game Winning Goals is a terrible stat to use to prove anything. Do you even know how it works? Lets say a player scores the goal to make it 5-0, then his team falls apart and only wins 5-4. The guy who scored the 5-0 goal gets the GWG, real clutch lol. Might have been a 4th liner because the coach was resting his stars. Another scenario. Player scores a goal to break a 1-1 tie with 2 minutes left in the game, huge clutch goal. Other team pulls their goalie and someone adds the empty netter. The losing team still pulls their goalie and gets one back making a 3-2 final. Who gets the GWG? The guy who scored the empty netter. 2023-24, Matthews had 6 hat tricks. and 10 2-goal games....... You can't score more than 1 GWG per game is that his fault? He finished the year with 8 GWG, tied for 11th in the NHL...... Even if he scored 69 goals in 69 different games the Leafs aren't going to win 69 games. The more you goals you score the less likely you are to get a GWG. Your percentage goes down. It's a completely flawed stat.
I have to question the methodology of clutchness having a relationship to GWG. If you score to make it 5-0 then the other team scores four goals to make it 5-4, was your goal a clutch goal or did it just happen to be the GWG? How about if you score two minutes into a game to make it 1-0, then your goalie gets the shutout? I know it's a much more difficult stat to look up, but I'd use something like goals that change the lead (tie/take the lead) in the last few minutes/overtime.
That’s fair. But keep in mind that in most cases from the prior MVP sample. We’re talking 500-1000+ games. If they are showing a higher percentage of GWG it’s speaks volume to me
GWG is a tough stat to use for comparisons. How much does team quality affect it? If you are a top goal scorer on a bad team, then there is a better chance that the rare win will result in a GWG for you. But you will also score in more losing efforts. Flip side, if you are a good goal scorer on a top team, you have more wins to fish for GWGs, but those game winners will be spread among more scorers. Hard to say if you should or shouldn't cancel out certain players because they are on crap NHL teams. Not to mention using scoring rates from a tournament that has at most 7-8? games per team. Sample size. Still, very interesting vid.
Only Team Canada could screw a guy in his draft pick year! The fans want to see the best players. The best players can play with anybody and help improve everybody on the ice. Pick better coaches!!!
Not sure what Dave Cameron is doing. Cutting some of the defenceman they didn’t take reminds me of the year Cale Makar was the 7th D-Man on his world junior team. I remember Ray Ferraro saying during one of the games that they need to put him on the ice more because every time he’s out there Canada gets a scoring chance. Looks like they have more of a grinding hard working team that might struggle to score in the medal round. The one thing to remember though is that there is no Russia and team USA has no elite players this year. Canada should win pretty easy since they are also playing at home.
Do you think that one of the differences between teams over that last 10 years and teams of the 90’s and early 2000’s is that today’s players are less willing to accept non prominent roles like they used to? So now they have to take more role players instead of best available to not have to deal with the egos?
