    Hi there, this has been a great help and I think it has helped me to identify a problem with my boiler. The red lit timed button is on all the time. It only went off when I was setting the clock to the right time and finished programming. I have it programmed to come on one time and 2&3 as shown as I only need it on once. It is set to winter with no timed boost to come on 7-8.30am once a day. My bills are extortionate and hence investigation. But what I have discovered is the red timed button is displayed all the time even if I put the switch to OFF! From watching this video it clearly states the red timed button should only be lit when the set time is on I.e. between 7-8.30am. I really would appreciate confirmation that the wiring seems wrong before I go to the expense of having to get an engineer or electrician out 🙏🏻🙏🏻

      Hi Janine, Sorry to reply you late.
      The red LED light should only be On when the power is supplied to boiler during programmed time. In your case the scenario seems the boiler is always powered to heat and this is causing high electricity bill.

    Good morning , thank you for your helpful video. I’ve recently moved in to my new flat and warm water was working fine. Since August it seems like the overnight heating doesn’t heat up to how hot the water used to be ?? I’ve resetted everything like how your video instructs. Any ideas how I can fix this ? The booster does still work though when I manually set it. Would you advise to set the programmed boost ? I’ve been quoted £450 by an engineer to replace the heating element

    • @bicyclecolours8988
      @bicyclecolours8988  8 днів тому

      Good morning Gerald, With your situation I wonder if this could be either boiler heating element or the insulation. Can you try setting your timer close to your regular hot water usage time and see if the problem still exists. This can confirm if there is an issue with boiler insulation and not heating element. If you still don't get hot water then it could be the heating element problematic and you may need servicing. Most of the times poor insulation leads to heat loss overnight.

    Hi, I have this same system at my place. I have setup 3 off peak times, 4-5pm 8-9pm and 5-6am. The only problem here is that I’m only getting hot water for 15-20 mins and then it drops to mild and then cold.
    I’m planning to change it to default settings which is just one off peak 2-7am and other 2 are off. After this setting will I get hot water for whole day? Shower is only used twice daily.
    Thanks.

    Hi, thank you very much for your video. It has helped a lot. I have one question so when the LED is lit does that mean the water is hot and I can use it or does it mean the boiler is operating in warming the water? I say this because I set a time (05:00-07:00) as you instructed but the LED light is lit (the time is now 06:00) and the water is still cold?
    Thank you in advance

      Hi Rebekah, Glad the video was helpful and you were able to perform setup.
      When the 'Timer' LED is On then it means the boiler is operational. Can you please check if there is supply of hot water after 2 hours. If this is not happening then one cause could be the boiler needs temperature setup to be raised. If nothing is working then it is recommended to connect with boiler service team and get this resolved.

    Few questions,
    What's the difference between the offpeak programme timer and boost programme timer?
    what's the summer and winter setting used for?
    So will the "timed" light be on only when the water is being heated?

    • @bicyclecolours8988
      @bicyclecolours8988  Рік тому

      I know the Horstmann timer is connected to two immersion heaters (top and bottom) and the tank is a thermal store always filled with water. During timed program the lower immersion is switched On and during boost the upper immersion heater. The boost is used when additional hot water is needed.
      The controller summer or winter timings are automatic and cannot be changed manually. This is set by manufacturer during installation of boiler/controller based on your location. The controller automatically switches time during daylight saving.
      Yes, the timed light will be On when the water is being heated.

    Very useful video, and huge respect for responding to each and every comment here👏🏻 my question is, I have a standard energy tariff without off peak times. Would I get a better result if I replace boost times with off-peak times and remove timed boost altogether? Or both programmes should kick in different times of the day regardless of the energy tariff?

    • @bicyclecolours8988
      @bicyclecolours8988  11 місяців тому

      Hi Baris, Thanks for a note of appreciation :-)
      As you have only standard energy tariff, both 'Off Peak Programme' and 'Boost Programme' should result in same energy consumption depending upon your hot water requirement. You can experiment if only using 'Timed or Off Peak Programme' suffices your hot water needs. In that case you may even not require to use 'Boost Programme'.

    Hey bro, great video. Couple of things. Water doesn't seem to be heating overnight, despite following instructions exactly. The run button even comes on, but it just doesn't heat up. However, the boost does work. The upper part of the system warms up and there is hot water. In regard to the timed boost, I see you still have to set the timer for it. Does it matter if you set the timer from midnight to midnight, or should you only set it for 1 hour at a time? Bit confused by that.

      Hey, I would recommend increase the boiler On time in steps and check for hot water rather keeping it on for entire day. Keeping boiler on for entire day can lead to increased electricity bill. In winter you may need to keep on timer for longer duration due to low water temperatures.

    • @bicyclecolours8988
      @bicyclecolours8988  Рік тому

      Hi, As you know the advantage of timer function is to run heater during 'Off peak' electricity supply and also to plan for uninterrupted supply of hot water through the day.
      On technical side as I know usually the Horstmann timer is connected to two immersion heaters (top and bottom) and the tank is a thermal store always filled with water. This water surrounds one more water coil inside tank. These coils are connected to your hot and cold taps. During timed program the lower immersion is switched on and during boost the upper immersion heater. When you start using hot tap, the cold water passes through coils inside the tank and it is then heated by the stored hot water that is inside the tank surrounding the coils. During timer on, all of the water inside the tank is heated up to the temperature set on the thermostat inside the tank. Once the tank is hot, the heater switches 'off' and no more electricity is consumed. The stored hot water looses heat as cold water flows through coils as it is consumed by you.
      On some instances there could be failure in heating system due to broken immersion, internal thermostat, or the wiring. This may lead stored water to heat at a lower temperature than set level on thermostat. In these events you will have hot water supply in low quantities and also at lower temperatures.
      The boost feature is designed as an emergency top up if you run out of hot water during the day. If there is a broken system then using boost will also not solve the issue and may cause higher electricity bill.
      If you feel the issue is not fixable then it's recommended to seek an electrician with test gears to diagnose the problem.

      Hi Vanessa, Glad the video was useful.
      The timer setup completely depends on your hot water usage. You need to consider hot water use in kitchen and other hand washing areas. I would recommend set the timer for 2 hours each in the morning and evening. Later observe your usage and gradually reduce the heating period by 15 minutes and check if that effects any hot water shortfalls.

      @bicyclecolours8988  Рік тому

      Hey, Glad to know video was helpful :-)
      Setting controller timer allows boiler to get switched On when temperature of water gets lowered in the storage. So programme setup needs to be depending on your water usage. The boiler gets auto switched Off when it has reached to set temperature.
      If you set all 3 timers between 12am to 6am and if this setup is good enough to keep hot water supply for entire day then you are good to go. If you feel hot water runs out later in the day then it's recommended having one setup during the day.

    • @bicyclecolours8988
      @bicyclecolours8988  Рік тому +1

      Hi Ryan, As I know the timer is connected to two immersion heaters (top and bottom) and the tank is a thermal store always filled with water. During timed program the lower immersion is switched On and during boost the upper immersion heater. The boost is used when additional hot water is needed. You can use Boost program if you anticipate more usage of hot water or you can switch it ON on need basis.
      The off-peak program is to put the boiler ON if you have an option for off-peak tariff plan for electricity. The boiler can run during off-peak time and store water for the entire day. This way you pay less electricity bill.

    Is there an easy way to tell if the heating is on (as in currently heating up the water)? Is it the light marked "timed"?
    The availability of hot water seems unrelated to the time periods set up on that thing...

    • @bicyclecolours8988
      @bicyclecolours8988  11 місяців тому

      Hi David, It's only the light marked 'Timed' which is an indicator that boiler is On. The Horstmann controller only dictates the boiler to switch On and Off at programmed times. You may need to experiment like 'Boiler On time' Vs 'Daily hot water consumption' and set the program accordingly.

    • @bicyclecolours8988
      @bicyclecolours8988  8 місяців тому

      Hi, The best guess that I could make is the manual/thermostatic setup for shower mixer isn't working well. Check if you recently amde changes for winter and setup is disturbed. The temperature setup for tap is always different than shower. The other reasons could be like -
      - Boiler is supplying hot water to radiator and shower at the same time.
      - Temperature setting in boiler is low and this is not helping in winter as cold water is consuming more energy to heat.
      - The hot water discharge at dish washing is low compared to shower. In that case hot water last longer at dish washing.
      If nothing works out then last guess could be if there are any insulation issues to piping system in bathroom which requires plumber assistance.

      However there is no noise from my tank. Usually I would hear a small noise to indicate that the heating element in the tank is working. This leads me to believe that the problem is not the Horstmann panel but the heating element in the tank.

      Hi Wilson, Boost lets you temporarily switch ON hot water outside of scheduled events. When Boost is used on demand it does heat-up the top part of the cylinder only. The bottom part of boiler cylinder is still cold.
      If you need all time hot water on demand basis then the most recommended way is to use instant water heater rather than programmable boiler controller.
      Or you can follow this video to set program for specific time and hot water will be stored for entire day to use.

      Hi Natasha, I guess there could be some issue with the Boost function. Just to understand, is the timer function working well and boiler is able to deliver hot water?

      Hi, The summer and winter mode are automatic, it's set by manufacturer and comes along during installation. The Clock setup is manual.

      Hi Karnakar, You can set controller timer at frequent intervals so boiler gets switched On when temperature of water gets lowered in the storage. The boiler gets auto switched Off when it has reached to set temperature.

    This video doesn’t shows how to change summer button to winter buttons

      Hi Chanit, The controller cannot be changed for summer or winter timings manually. This is set by manufacturer during installation of boiler/controller based on your location. The controller automatically switches time during daylight saving. Hope this helps.

      Hi Shaz, Sry to hear this. Can you pls try increasing timer period and check once. If nothing is working then it’s good to approach boiler service engineer.
