I attribute a significant percentage of my technical and creative growth to Devin Korwin. His creative fundamental books were the mentors I needed to push my art / art process to the next level. I'm enthusiastic to learn more from his school at Underpaint Academy. Someday I intend to get a 1-on-1 mentorship from him.

Absolutely love the idea of flipping from optical construction, imagination reference, and absolute basics (2 value/simple shapes) to complexity within a single piece. Great discussion!

It was so cool to see how his mind worked while painting in watching that process video. I have always admired people who used blocks of color/value to construct their sketches and ideas because I've only ever really used lines! It's awesome to see all the different workflows out there and the incredible results they get :)

Great talk. Straight to the point. The questions you asked are very relatable and I really like the philosophy behind Devin's answers.

What a great video... I've been learning digital painting as a hobby for the last 10 years and have arrived at some of the same conclusions as he has, I've never been so in "sync" with someone before, especially with the concept of switching back and forth between construction and the "jigsaw" puzzle, most of the resources out there emphasize one over the other, yes there is subtext sometimes about this, but never plainly said. This is as revelatory for as when I learned about major and minor keys.
I'll definitely save up for his mentorship and join the waitlist.

This video is so relatable to me, as a fantasy illustrator! Thank you a lot for it 🙏
I'm still wondering though. When working with clients, as a first stage, you need to deliver rough sketches visualizing the idea. I used to do that from imagination to not be "limited" by reference. However in this case I feel limited by my skills, when I fail painting a certain pose, that I imagine or fail to paint object in a right perspective. So I end up makeing photo shooting first, based on my ideas, and then paint rough sketches for clients, using this reference photos. And I wonder how can I make it possible to paint those rough sketches from imagination rightaway. Will this skill come just with time...

Hi. Great discussion! Can you or Devin recommend any books on how to draw conceptually? I only ever draw optically, and having a book to guide me conceptually would be extremely helpful.

Try slowing the play-rate way down.
I did this and also used closed captions to be sure of what was being said.

That zooming in and out is equivalent to him getting up and moving away from the canvas to see the painting as a whole. I digital paint and do something similar.
