    That sounds like a fair and accurate synopsis of Holo Taco. I have a number of her polishes, although I don't buy every release. I agree about the brand excelling in finishes as opposed to cremes. My exception would be Butterscotch Hop. I continue to be impressed at the coverage, as they seem to have solved the curse of yellow polishes being streaky and hard to apply.
    I lean toward cool colours, and Holo Taco's Zyler The Cat made me fall in love with orange polish. It was such a great orange with all those silver and holo glitters, I couldn't stop looking at it on my nails. It made me seek out other orange polishes, and get warm colours into my collection.
    The other reasons I like the brand actually have nothing to do with the polish. I'm Canadian, and I like supporting a Canadian entrepreneur, particularly a woman-owned business. I also like her history of charitable giving, even back before Holo Taco was founded, donating to animal shelters, and paying tuition for people in college or university. And last year she established that scholarship at Carleton University, which is where she got her degrees, for students who also pursue creative endeavors. I like that she gives back to the community.
    Oh, and Existential Crisis came out last year along with Frozen Benanas.

      Oh yeah, Butterscotch Hop was a realllly nice one! And you're right, I think her charitable endeavors are pretty admirable. I think it's cool to see a UA-camr who really didn't change much in the fame of her channel and I respect her work ethic and drive!

    Yes, the brand favorites are great, especially for brands I haven't used much.
    I'm one of the people who only got into indies because of Holo Taco. It's a gateway drug!
    When she did the re-release of an old polish, I was so sad it wasn't the purple flakie taco. The glitters in it are completely unique as far as I've seen. The color layers really nicely over other colors and the glitters just pop in a really special way. My bottle is more than half empty.
    I like her linear holos for the opacity and the durability. I do have linear holos from other brands that are more holo reflective, but that's at the expense of more coats of polish, as you pointed out. The HT linear polishes are also insanely brightly colored, they look great whether they're in direct lighting or not.
    My favorite linear is actually half purple slushie and half magenta jelly -- I had to frankenpolish it to get the perfect purple for me, but it was worth it.

      That's so awesome! I've seen so many people talk about how they got into the nail polish community via Holo Taco and it's cool to see so many new people flooding in!
      Purple Flakie Taco (and the other two in that trio) were so interesting when they came out! I bought them on a whim and when they came I didn't think I would like them but as soon as I put them on I was like omg these are sooo cool!

    Ok, since you asked...🙊*gushing*🙊
    My favorites are Green Taffy, Play Rosé, Chameleon Coat, and Solar Unicorn Skin. I love most though, and at least like the rest. 😄
    Well...ok. I actually dislike most of the Unicorn Skins over white. I don't like it when the flakes turn yellow. But over colors, they are all top-drawer. 😄

      I'm with you actually. I don't love a flakie topper that much, I prefer when it's already mixed into a polish. I just feel like they only really look very interesting over black and that's about it. But, I know some people are die hard for the flakie toppers!

    I agree that it is hard to classify Halo Taco. To me, both more true indie brands and mainstream brands produce polishes that are intended to be worn alone, whether it is a creme, a shimmer or a magical concoction of base, flakes, and glitter. Halo Taco occupies the niche of combinations. Cristine makes polishes with the intent layering to create an unique results.
    I respect that Cristine does listen to the customer and has made changes as a result. My hope is (along with a deep forest green linear Holo) that she continues to take some risks on finishes while maintaining the core identity of the brand: holo and combos.
    My favorite five polishes from the brand are: Fake Date, Mint Mojito, Scattered Halo Taco, Gold Flake Taco and Zyler the Cat. Also, I love Smoothing Base as a layer between Orly Bonder and the actual polishes.

      I need to try out smoothing base! I've had a couple ridge filler base coats and just never loved the ones I had so I need to give hers a shot

    KB Shimmer has a brown Holo glitter that is almost identical to HT, called 'Espresso Yourself'. And a good gray that's not too plain is by LynBDesigns - 'Renoir or not, here I come'. ILNP has a gray with rose gold flakes called Tombstone.

    I'd love a continuation of the brand favorites series!
    Holo Taco is unquestionably the brand I have most of. Narrowing it down to 10 would be so hard for me! I use the original linear rainbow polishes in skittle manicures and rainbow nail art all the time. One Coat Black is my holy grail black; I'm already on the second bottle. I also love all of the unicorn toppers and use them all the time, ditto Flakie Holo Taco, and ditto the 1st annoversary set of colored holo flakie toppers.
    I'm still kicking myself for not getting Existential Crisis.

    Love these more topic based videos! I definitely fall into the camp of HT being a gateway for getting into not just indies but nail polish in general. I'd always wanted to be a nail polish person and spring of 2020 when I was in lockdown with not much to do it seemed like a great time to get into it, which led to the YT algorithm funneling me a lot of HT content. One thing that I really appreciated about the brand (and still do!) as a newbie was that 1) most of their catalogue is permanent and 2) they have enough variety to be interesting, but not a huge overwhelming back catalogue like more mainstream staple brands like OPI and Essie. I will say though that it's super disappointing that a company founded by a Canadian doesn't have better shipping options FOR Canadians. I can appreciate the logistics of why it had to be based in the States, but it still really sucks.

    • @MediocreManis
      @MediocreManis  2 роки тому

      I'm so glad it was a gateway for you! I agree though, I wish they would find better shipping options. I really think they should have a separate warehouse in Canada just to ship out of but of course the cost of renting the warehouse and paying the staff may not be within their budget. I feel bad for a lot of the Canadians though because I can understand wanting to support one of your own and then feeling a little miffed when you don't feel supported back.

    i really agree with your assessment of the brand. It really excels at fun finishes. That being said, their cremes are fabulous. They have wonderful richness of color and great coverage, most are almost one coat. That being said, the only creme I have in my Top 10 Holo Taco list is Matcha Maker, and only because it is such a unique shade. I honestly haven't seen any other creme in exactly that shade. The rest of my faves would be: Scattered Holo, Hydropower, Everything Taco, Gold Flakie ( LOVE that one), Way Back Chrome, Sparkling Water, Mint Mojito, Green Taffy and Red Licorice. Red Licorice almost looks like velvet on the nail, it's very cool. I like this series, it's fun to see what others have as faves!

    I do love the One Coat Black, but because of the price I use it sparingly. Instead, I often use Wet n Wild Black Crème. For me it's usually a one coater. However, I do hate the bottle and brush, so I pour it into a better one. For $1- $2 it works great.

    Cirque Memento Mori & Starrily Vantablack are awesome 1 coat Blacks, along with the Holo Taco one.
    I prefer Starrily just because it comes with a wide brush already.
    I'm not sure which brands you own enough of to incorporate into this series but I'd love to see Cirque colors, ILNP, Orly & any indies you have enough of 😊

    If I could only pick one HT polish it would be Everything Taco, it is amazing over anything. I really like Duct Tape Grey, it is my perfect grey and my favorite creme from HT. My favorite Multi Chrome is Cats Evasion, and I don't even like pink. My favorite formula is the chunky glitters, all of them, I could never choose just one or two. I don't know how you narrow it down to just 10, there are so many good ones.

    love this video!! I've been a fan of Christine from before HT launch, and bc I mostly do gel nail I've never gotten much holo taco, except for their first launch. But since I started watching her stream, I decided to get a their holiday collection (the one with chaco-brown, which is my fav as well!) and I actually enjoyed using the polishes and then putting a gel top coat over it. So this video was super helpful as I'm currently adding some of ur favorites to cart! It would be fun to see an updated HT brand favorites if ur list has changed this past year.

    This was a very reasonable assessment of the brand. I personally have only two cremes (OCB and Indigo Away which I have issues with due to the brush. Luckily I’m pretty sure both have that fixed as of recent. OCB is a bit thick for me and I find it hard to clean up because it’s so opaque, especially with the skinny brush making application messier, but it’s great for when I need black and am not layering glitter toppers. Indigo Away is a gorgeous color as a purple and blue lover, and it’s so dark it makes the toppers pop), most of their glitters, linears, and toppers. Their linear formula does actually live up to the hype, applies like butter and holo as hell. Toppers are my favorite products from them, they have such a good payoff and formula without sacrificing your base color or looking cheap. The glitters. I love and HATE them. They’re so beautiful but so thick and hard to remove. But they look better than all my polishes. Play Rose is my best color on me. I love them but I will only wear a peel of base coat and am severely considering brush replacements since I find them to be too flimsy for the fast-drying, extremely texture glitter finish.
    Tl;dr I love them but I’m mixed on some aspects (formula sometimes, brushes in particular, and I will not hesitate to dupe them for less if I can) of the brand.

    • @MediocreManis

      The glitters are VERRRY thick. I often forget to throw on a peel off base when I put glitter on because I'm being absent minded and I always regret it haha

    Choco holo was the main reason I picked up the holiday collection, never thought I would ever buy a brown polish. I just realized I don't have any of their creams, but I really love the teal. They do have the best linear holo, I have naked nails today, but I already know that a linear Holo Taco will be my mani tomorrow. Thank you for another great video.

    I do not have any of Holo Taco polishes! I have looked many times, but for what ever reason I just put them on the back burner and forget about them. I'm sure I'll pull the trigger one day and try few, but not really in a rush to get her polishes. As for the series go, yes, brand favorites is an awesome idea! Maybe you can do Orly, China Glaze or Sinful C. next?

      I think I didn't buy any HT until like the one year anniversary launch just because they're on the pricier side and I couldn't justify it. I think they're a good and solid brand but there's other stuff that is just as good too!

    I have all of the specialty finishes and the cremes that come with the big collections 💁‍♀️ the only ones I’m missing are the standalone creme bundles-I’m not a huge fan of cremes in general.
    Hard agree with the idea that Holo Taco is the “gateway” indie! I got into Cupcake, Glam, Starrily, and more because of HT.
    Also, Existential Crisis is one of my favorite polishes EVER. If I could buy three more bottles I absolutely would. I love it so much on my nails. There are so many dimensions to it that the marketing photos don’t even come close to showing.

    Nice top 10! I fully agree that the linear holo polishes are their best polishes. Next to purple slushie, I'd say lavender syrup is a must have for purple lovers.
    It would be great if holo taco also experimented with different kinds of polish finishes like magnetic or thermal, I'm more interested in "new" things than additional creme polishes collections

    I know nail polish lovers like to shit on One Coat Black because there are other one coat blacks for cheaper (KBShimmer is 15 mL for $11, Cirque Memento Mori is way more expensive, $12.50 for 11 mL and they still have Simply Nailogical named in their listing) but Holo Taco's version is still great and I'm on my second bottle with no regrets. I agree with all your sentiments, they are a great brand mixing mainstream and indie concepts and they are perfecting their formulas if they didn't already get it right the first time (ex. liners). Two other arguments against the brand are they're too expensive for cremes, however Essie and OPI are what, $9 and $10 retail and aren't cruelty free and do produce shitty formulas occasionally? And that "Holo Taco is now mostly cremes," except they only have 29 cremes. That's not "mostly".

    • @flaminghorsebackrider6969
      @flaminghorsebackrider6969 2 роки тому +1

      You do realize Cirque and Simply have a good relationship, right? Like, openly support each other. If Simply didn’t want her name on that site it wouldn’t be up there. I also see OCB (and Momento Mori… and Liquid Leather) recommended in just about every “Good Black?” post, nail polish lovers like it. It’s not *my* exact cup of tea but I still like using it for certain things (it’s great for matte black where I want a thicker coat than my other one), plus one of my three issues with it (the small brush) is fixed.
      As for the pricing of the cremes I think that’s actually a fair critique. OPI and Essie are good scapegoats for (though both are supposed to have shown massive improvement in recent years), but the reality is you can get way more polish at a lower price point with great formulas that are still cruelty-free. Orly, Color Club, Morgan Taylor, China Glaze (formulas may vary here… but the newer ones have supposedly much improved formulas), even Sinful Colors. Mark my words HT has nice cremes but if you can definitely get formulas you might like better for cheaper. Holo Taco being mostly cremes is definitely slander though.

    • @disco7796
      @disco7796 2 роки тому +1

      @@flaminghorsebackrider6969 I was unaware of the Cirque/Simply relationship, I know Simply hasn't been mentioning/endorsing other brands in her videos since she started her own brand so I was thinking that at this point she would say her own black is the best but I have not checked that is true.
      Sinful Colors is not cruelty free afaik and I do love other brand's cremes, Cirque, Orly, and Color Club, but with regards to a one coat black I like Holo Taco's the best. Just my opinion.

    • @MediocreManis
      @MediocreManis  2 роки тому +2

      I've seen a lot of people get so mad about One Coat Black but I just find it works very well for me. I think HT is a fine brand, I'm not a stan and feel like there are valid criticisms out there of the brand, but some people just want to be mad. I think it's a good move to release more cremes when you're a brand that does a lot of toppers! Plus, people were all asking for more cremes so she listened to her fanbase! Zoya polishes are $12 across the board now and people still buy their cremes so I think it's just complaining for the sake of complaining, you know?

    I don’t own any Holo Taco but I feel like because everyone gushes over them (even when true) it makes me knee jerk react rebel that I don’t want it. I’m sure at some point I will but I don’t feel sad not having their products.

    • @MediocreManis
      @MediocreManis  2 роки тому

      As someone who owns everything by them but isn't a stan, I'd say I generally enjoy their stuff but I do think they're very pricey for how "standard" most of the polishes are. I do think their linears are great ans one coat black is awesome for me but I think most polishes could be found at a cheaper price through other brands as well.
