The only time I saw Scorpions was at Donington '86 and I'm thankful. World Wide Live is truly fantastic. Blackout, Animal Magnetism and yes I like Savage Amusement.
1 - Virgin Killer /2 - Taken By Force /3 - In Trance /4 - Animal Magnetism /5 - Fly to the Rainbow Fun fact about the song Virgin Killer. It started as a piss taking on Paul Stanley by Uli on a soundcheck. Kiss had just visited England for the very first time in early 76.
Great show👍🏻🤘🏻 1.blackout. 2.lovedrive. 3.love at first sting. 4.taken by force. 5.rock believer. 6.in trance. 7.animal magnatism. 8.virgin killer. 9.savage amusement. 10.crazy world. 11.sting in the tail. 12.fly the rainbow.
been listening since 1972 Lonesome Crow.. But when Fly To the Rainbow came out I was blown away. I'm with Pete when he says the 70's Scorpions are the best.
The early 80's stuff is my favorite....but after those 3 or albums - yeah, I agree with you on the 70's stuff. If people aren't sure, I always tell them to buy the "Best of the Scorpions" on RCA and then decide IF they want to pursue the 70's stuff. After I heard that collection of greatest hits (at that time), I then next bought "Virgin Killer" and went from there. Love "In Trance".....
I had a conversation with a girl at school and she found out I was a rock fan. She asked if I had ever heard of the Scorps. I said no and she said let me bring in two albums for you to listen to. They were "Lovedrive" and "Animal Magnatism" I was BLOWN away and was a fan EVER since.
My top 5: 5. Virgin Killer 4. Black Out 3. In Trance 2. Love at First Sting 1. Lovedrive Could scramble the order any day, these albums are so awesome. I love Taken by Force and Animal Magnetism as well, but they're more inconsistent records than these five.

Awesome show, love Pete & Martin! Big Scorpions fan, a top 5 is hard but I’ll try: 1.) In Trance; 2.) Lovedrive; 3.) Taken By Force; 4.) Animal Magnetism; 5.) Blackout.
LOVEDRIVE- I discovered the Scorpions after I discovered UFO w/ Michael Schenker and went searching for his earlier stuff so by the time Blackout hit the states I already owned every Scorpions album.
Love these TOP discussions. Makes me go back and revisit these albums that I never really got into. Never made it much past Blackout and Animal Magnetism. Scorps were never really heavy enough for me.
I'm from the Chicago area. UFO was big in the area & as a result the "Lovedrive" was their breakthrough (as far as Chicago was concerned). The local rock stations would play "Loving You Sunday Morning", "Lovedrive", & even "Another Piece of Meat" on a regular basis. Scorpions have a loyal fan base here.
Lonesome Crow through Animal Magnetism. Thats it. Blackout is a maybe. After that, I cant stomach. Uli Jon Roth defintely my favorite era. Lonesome Crow probably #1 for me, followed by Intrance. The rest are a tie :)

Enjoyable discussion. Thanks. Uli is just amazing. A sorcerer. Matthias an underdog but really shines. Both Uli and Matthias need Rudolf. The spine. The Malcom. He shapes the band. His ideas, riffs and playing are the structure of the Scorps. Uli is so awesome. But he needed the foil of Rudolfs simplicity. Matthias such cool harmony lines. Takin that Lizzy thing somewhere else. And Matthias is really tasty. Uli stops time. Rudolf is the band. Everything they did up to Love at First Sting Rocks. The live acoustic thing in Greece is the only thing I like after that. Love the Scorps Animal Magnetism Fly to the Rainbow In Trance Lovedrive Blackout
Our local radio station played Make It Real and The Zoo from Animal Magnetism during the Summer of 1980 and I happened to see them open for Ted Nugent on the Scream Dream tour. Def Leppard were the first act on the bill. I got all three albums after seeing that show and Animal Magnetism has been the one that gets the most listens after all the years. I’d say Blackout is the best Matthias record and In Trance is the best Uli record.
I saw Scorps open for Nugent and Ac/DC with Bon in 1979. So I love animal magnetism but like lovedrive and virgin killer even more. Blackout would be 4 and taken by force 5.

The first Scorps albums I bought were Lovedrive and Tokyo Tapes on the same day in May 79 then I saw them at the Reading Rock Festival and they became a favourite until that awful dip in quality during the 90's presaged in no small part by Savage Amusement. Incidentally the third Scorps album bought was Taken by Force in January 1980. I've also got that French AxeKiller 2 CD pack of In Trance and Virgin KIller - Fly to the Rainbow is split as bonus tracks on each disc so side 1 is after In Trance and Side 2 is after Virgin Killer. And presumably because its French, unfortunately they have THAT Virgin Killer cover that Pete briefly showed.
1. Animal Magnetism 2. Blackout 3. Love at First Sting 4. Lovedrive 5. Taken by Force Other strong albums: In Trance, Virgin Killer, Fly to the Rainbow and Savage Amusement.

I saw Scorps open for Nugent and Ac/DC with Bon in 1979. So I love animal magnetism but like lovedrive and virgin killer even more. Blackout would be 4 and taken by force 5.
I discovered them exactly like Pete did. I heard No On Like You on 94WHJY out of Providence.
Live records are a easy out, they are basically greatest hits records. That being said
#5 Tokyo Tapes Steamrock Fever Speedy's Coming and Top of the Bill
#4 Animal Mag Couple real great Poppy songs here but still a few strange songs, Plus The Zoo is a classic
#3 Love at First Sting, This is where they topped out perfect songs perfect recording and probably there best written and performed record

#1 Lovedrive, Bought it for the cover ( Original) kept it for the songs and my introduction to the band
Dont know a top 5 but my fave is the heavily hated and underrated savage amusment
70s run and early 80s are their greatest ones
I first heard Scorpions with Rock You Like A Hurricane. I bought Love At First Sting, then World Wide Live, then a budget cassette of Virgin Killer and I was like Whaaaaaaat??? This is... Different. And better. Then a friend played Tokyo Tapes for me. Oh dear gods. Pure magic.

I love “pure instinct” album. Very underrated.
Great video hack. For me, the scorpions could do no wrong from their debut thru blackout!
Thanks for watching. Cheers
Very good episode Hack.🎸

The Scorpions.............................. Rules
Not a lot of bands have a perfect run of 5. From In Trance to Animal Magnetism, it doesn’t get much better. Only Maiden with their first 5 and Priest with the 5 from Sad wings did it equally magnificent.
And that is also my top5:
1. In Trance ( including the iconic album cover)
2. Virgin Killer
3. Taken by Force
4. Lovedrive
5. Animal Magnetism (in particular side B)
And they were the coolest band back then, with their no taboo attitude (including the ‘shocking’ album covers).
Hack got it so right, they lost a lot of their finesse after Uli left. But the 2 first with Matthias were amongst the best Heavy Metal releases in mainland Europe, and in many respects better than their American and English peers. Don’t forget, we’re talking 79/80, a period in music where everyone was like into punk and New Wave, and when NWOBHM was still an underground phenomenon.
Show suggestion: U2 - Ranking the albums, not sure if Pete would be interested, but Martin loves at least 80s U2.
Great Show Watched Earlier,But from the outside..Hope you have been Well, gonna Resub,Not getting all notifications..Keep Rockin 🤘🖤🎸👍

Yeah, weird how it worked out that way!
Wow! Martin’s number 1 is incredibly Contrarian!
Would you expect anything less from Marty 😂😂
Animal Magnetism is decent but nowhere near the bands best.

ANIMAL MAGNETISM
You only need one album. TOKYO TAPES.

3- Love a first Sting
4- Animal Magnetism

I cannot pick my top 5, even top 10 is difficult. :S
Fact check: Lady Starlight is a very good song.
Eye II eye, humanity hour part 1, return to forever, pure instinct, acoustica
1 fly to the rainbow
Tokyo Tapes

Virgin killer
Taken by force
Fly to the Rainbow
Their last album was more like a comeback for me. I kind of lost interest with Savage Amusement. It sounded like hardrock/pop and the drum sound is horrible. Some of the songs was not so bad though. My favorite is probably Blackout
I never try to guess the motivation. Did the Scorps, or Metallica, go back in style to please the masses?

The thing is, we'll never know. So I just choose to like it if it sounds good, and I don't try to analyze the motivation.
That "in Trance" CD is expensive - you can only get it via import so it runs like $30 or more (yikes).
Hack, you misnamed a Scorpions song. The song you mean is "Same Thrill" , not small thrill😂
I NEVER agree with Martin. I also must say that I don't get the lack of love for Born to Touch Your Feelings and Holiday. Two awesome songs!!
I bought a greatest hits of Scorps. It was the early stuff. One listen did not like it. Very different from Best of Ballads and Rockers.
"The Zoo" a favorite amonge strippers.😊😊
Oh yea... China White song!!! : )
