Hola Santi!

Learning Indonesian can help you a lot with communicating with Indonesians when you’re traveling to Indonesia for example, or if you meet one in general. You can still speak in English, of course, since most Indonesians I know can still speak English, but I’d say it’s better if you speak their native language since it’s more respectful if you do. Same with other languages. First you need to know, Indonesian language doesn’t have tenses nor genders. So for the European language speakers, you better put time definition (yesterday, two days ago, tomorrow, just now, etc) to explain the tenses. Most of our pronunciation is the closest to Latin or Italian. Indonesian language is practically spoken by every Indonesian regardless the local languages they speak (Yes, we are mostly bilingual; Indonesian & local language). Almost none of the Indonesian speak standard Bahasa Indonesia except in the news on TV, they often mix it with dialects. But Indonesians never mock foreigners who speak standard Indonesian so don’t you worry, the easy way is by learning through TV news and movies. But the best way to learn it still with Indonesian speaking people.
I'm starting to think that subscribing to people's UA-cam accounts is like exchanging business cards, to the new generations. It's not a bad thing, it's just funny to me how that kind of request is casually thrown in a conversation.
