This and others of Dennis Brain's recordings have just got to be preserved, if not only to keep us reminded of what one writer called the "extraordinarily supple sustained tone", the "subtly detailed phrasing", produced by an once-in-a-lifetime artist but to demonstrate to younger generations what true mastery and profundity of horn playing can sound like.
I was introduced to the Mozart Horn Concertos by my secondary school music teacher Lt. Col. Sam Rhodes, 60 years ago. I have loved them ever since, it was my dream to play the French horn, for a variety of reasons it didn't happen. Thank you Mr Rhodes for introducing me to the wonderful music.
I first heard this piece 60 years ago and have not heard a better rendition in all these years. His death in a car crash robbed the world of the greatest French Horn player who ever lived.
I still have my copy of the original recording on vinyl after more than sixty years. One of the first records I ever bought. It was part of my introduction to music.
I wore mine out! My band director lent me his in 1965 when I was in 5th grade and working on the rondo from Mozart 1 for the county band contest. I played it so often that my mom got me my own LP for Christmas. I'm now 68 and have heard many other horn players perform these concerti and have worked on all of them myself in conservatory. Dennis Brain is still far and away my favorite and I'm still in just as much awe of him now as I was 57 years ago.
Dennis Brain, Mozart Horn Concerto No.1 does MAGISTERIAL artwork. It is a complex work and Brain along with the orchestra and Maestro Herbert von Karajan give a splendid, diverting, outstanding, uplifting and downright listenable performance. A gem...
does anyone know if he is playing the trills with valves or as lip trills with alternate fingerings? i am trying to play this for my solo at school and i don't know which technique works better.
Hello, they are lip trills, for example use 1st and 2nd valves with no trigger for middle A. (Band directors know an amazing amount to share with students, but unless they are a horn player, they may not know all the tricks and subtleties.)

I can only echo these sentiments. Nothing compares to the nuancing and subtleties of Dennis Brain's playing. To me it was always god-like.
Thanks to UA-cam, it is preserved forever.

Ask your band director.
