People keep talking about high-end reputation sets and ignoring that this is a begineer's guide. Perspective is a thing, folks.
What they NEED to do is a true free-build for **first-year players**. Mostly mission rewards only, low level Rep gear, no lobi store, no event gear, no fleet (since it takes forever to get promoted to be able to buy stuff), no crafting, no epic XV upgraded stuff. I hate going to these "budget build" videos and they're all from players who have been playing long enough to have 2/3-piece Tier-6 Reputation sets at Mk XV, Lobi store items, Event consoles from 2 years ago, and saying "you can get this off the exchange for next to nothing" and it costs 35+ million EC.
@@joebaranski1996 Yes that would be me lol. I'm currently at level 40, unlocked the next free ship and I'm finding these guides helpful since STO is a very content rich game seemingly. At the moment I'm rinse and repeating Patrol missions for dilithium and only yesterday I figured out I could go to the Starbase trade section and purchase great equipment with the free in-game resource(I forget the name lol)).
Yah well beginners need to start working on that reputation so they should be aware of it and working towards it.
Thank you for putting this out! I recently started playing STO but any guides on YT are at least 2 years old! Glad to know you're still putting out this kind of content!
You are welcome, the older guides are still 100% good unless otherwise specified in the title.
@@MCStu How do u do a SB keybind?
Fortunately/unfortunately STO really hasn't changed much in many years. Sure the meta changes, but the basics pretty much stay the same.
I can't say I'm a new STO player, but I can easily say I don't have a clue what I'm doing 😝! Super helpful informative video!
4:19 the reason i stopped playing this game was because
i couldn't figure out how to upgrade the ships and what went where.
so thanks you for this.
The "congratulations for reaching level 30, here's a new ship with some random shit on it" doesn't help either. 😄
I've always had this somewhat controversial opinion, but I'm sticking to it.
For newer players who play Romulans, I really recommend using basic antiproton weapons. As a Romulan you can easily get near 40% crit chance (even close to 50% if meticulous). Considering antiproton gives a 20% crit severity increase, that will proc much much more often than any other weapons effect that only has a 2.5% chance to proc and 20% crit severity is not negligible.
Disruptor is also a good choice for newer players, mainly because of how many good stuff disruptor has that is fairly easy to get. The proc is also one of the better ones.
Remember damage resistance engineering consoles _quickly_ have diminishing returns. So stacking a bunch of the same won't really do you any good. But conversely tactical consoles stack fully.
What about console players who use a controller? I know there are options but they are never covered content creators. Anyway, thanks for the video. When I first started playing STO on console back in 2016. I had ZERO help. I learned by watching other UA-camrs who were popular back then and asking questions. Thank you for the tips, tricks and advice you give.
Advanced tactics: we're not retreating, we're advancing in a different direction.
The first thing I do in a new Star ship is find the coffee Maker! These alien crew drive me crazy 🤣
I really do appreciate this guide being available to new players. It's a daunting task to have to explain shipbuilding to people and even more of a daunting task to explain to them what each equipment slot does and what the best best in slot piece of gear is for it especially at their level it's best to give them a general idea of what they can do for starters in the immediate right now so that they can figure out what they want to do with their ships later
Please do ground build video sometime. (Preferably one for each class) I’ve been playing for a while and my character always dies when that random ground tfo comes up.
Could you make a guide which are the best console to use and how to acquire them and etc with space weapons because I’ve been really struggling finding a good phasers for my space build :( 😢😢
Thank you for your time and effort in helping out the players that get lost along the way o7
i just recently started playing this game again. i forgot how much i loved it lol. i will definately use some of this.
A single torpedo is also best as part of a set, and if you want Phaser (or Disruptor but need to level the rep all the way to 6) then the finest Reputation set is Lorca's Ambition for the Discovery reputation (Beam bank, console, torpedo)
While a solid Mission set is "Trilithium-Laced Weaponry" from Beyond the Nexus (New Frontiers story arc)
They are both "torpedo sets", so if you only use one torpedo, you have to forgo the 3 piece bonus on one of them
Quantum Phase Catalysts from the Sunrise mission is another Phaser, torpedo, console set.
You could potentially try to collect a mission set at lower than mark 12 if you do them early, for greater chance of getting a quality upgrade, but there may be things that are more deserving of an upgrade, such as the reputation sets or Fleet equipment
Finally, you're too late to join it now, but if you have a Temporal Recruit, you can have reputation project equipment crafted at Mark 13 ULTRA rare instead of Mark 12 VERY rare
And claim the perk on all other characters on your account... don't forget to claim (I wasted a whole set by forgetting)
Valid advice, but as this video is directed as 'fresh from the academy' building, this is a ways off for these players.
A single Torpedo is still useful early on. Just save it for the moment your target's shields go down as the shields eat 75% of the torps damage.
Love the positive attitude at the end of this video, bud. Absolutely nailed this one.
If I put a torpedo on the aft, I like the romulan hyper plasma one. Big fat and slow, I think of it more as more maneuverable mines. 😆 Plus a bunch of triple plasma torpedoes with the spread power just looks cool. 💥💥💥
The Hyper Plasma torpedo has the advantage that it keeps firing even when you turn your ship front back to the enemies, so you only have to do one quick spin and fire at the right moment.
I felt like the most impactful rewards as a new player for my ship was obtaining the reputation sets and getting them fully upgraded.
Rep gear very good. Especially if you get a temporal agent (?) going and where the buffs it gives to Rep gear is that it starts at Ultra Rare Mark 13. So if you see a new _____ agent event going on, make sure you start one. You don't have to finish it during the event you just have to get it past the introductory phase.
@@Dracounguis I use Iconian, mixed with a Solanse deflector and boost weapons and aux. The Iconian set does a good job keeping the energy balanced so less need to focus.on shields and engine with the set perks
Thanks for the video, Stu. Been playing off and on since launch and I'm still an idiot. Always good to have more beginner info.
Awesome vid and excellent info for new players.
I’m a veteran player and I still learned something
Yes your power tray will fill up. Some of my characters have five rows full because I have so many extra ckicky powers from consoles and set bonuses. 😆 And then I keep the bridge officer powers on the highly inefficient version that has the character portraits. 😝
For quick reference: Boff Recommendations
Tactical - Fire At Will/Beam Overload then Torpedoes/Mines
Science - Photonic Officer
Engineer - Emergency Power to Weapons
🤘 is the the balance I've found I really enjoy , especially with high shield drain. Tearem universal control, time reputation warp core, and bonus dmg based on aux 😅 yea I really needed this video because I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing and just completely winging it. Thanks for the info ❤
Great, great video, as always! You are an asset to the community!!!
Thank you for this. I'm just starting, and this showed me that i was doing everything wrong.
Thanks for this. I recently come back to the game after playing for months, quitting for years, and never really knowing what I was doing. I love it now, though. It's a shame I haven't been playing all this time.
Glad I could help!
Thank you for this video, I really mean it!
Even though I have been playing this game for a while now.... I'm still a noob, and you have helped me....TREMENDOUSLY!
You and Sab have said "don't mix your weapons"i thought y'all meant don't mixed cannons and beams, so I adjusted accordingly but you meant tetryon, plasma, phaser, etc and I Soooo makes sense!
THANK YOU!
I wish I could sub and like a million times!
Keep up the great work sir!
Thank you I appreciate it, glad to help
in reguards to weapon power, there is a few weapons out there that use aux power over weapon power. so if you are using those weapons make sure you increase your aux power up and let weapon power drop all the way down.
Big help! I was only playin STO for a couple of days now lol
Rank 3 bridge officer powers... Most of them are craftable, so not available at the trainer NPC. Usually sell for stupidly high prices on the Exchange. Better method would be to...
1️⃣ Find a cheap bridge officer that has that power and use it to create a training manual
2️⃣ Ask a fleetmate (or random player) to make one for you. You might get lucky and someone will do one for you for free. 👍
Good info but I would add that all of this doesn't matter until you are at or near max level. If you're leveling, just equip whatever falls in your lap. You will out level things so fast it won't matter. But once you are at tier 5 or 6, then determine what flavor of weaponry you want to use and then build a set around that. Obviously if you find something good at low-level hold on to it.
I half disagree. This advice is to help direct you for what to look for and how to build as you go.
I would add that new players even with their minimal Energy Credits, can often buy viable weapons, consoles and gear from the exchange as they level. Price and Availability just depends on when you look.
Be sure to sell excess drops to a vendor that gives ⅔ of items listed value, not half. Ensign Lessa on Earth Spacedock, and Quark at Deep Space 9. Off the top of my head I believe the Qo'nos weapon vendor next to the tailor is one such vendor.
Great info! However, a huge problem is the lack of info for console players. I'm on Xbox, would love to have access to everything at the same readiness as you point out, but very difficult. Can only have a single power available on (I think) 5 spots? And, they are limited to one each for Tactical, Science, Engineering, plus 2 extras. Like, would be nice to have both Beam Overload AND one for Torps, but can only have one in the bind. Have to hold the button down for the Tactical Console spot to open a wheel, then maneuver to the other, and use it. On top of that, things like (for Romulans) Cloak and the Shockwave are on same spot, so, again, clumsy to utilize 'in the moment'.
As such, it kind of makes a lot of suggestions extremely difficult to follow. Would be nice if someone who knew enough about Console STO would make a video and/or guide specific to console. Pretty sure they did everything they could, really, only that it still comes off kinda clumsy to use. On PC, I remember being able to target and change target pretty easily in ship to ship combat. This is especially useful when playing the smaller tactical vessels meant for more 'Dogfighting' style stuff, swapping on and off targets on the fly as needed. But, on console, whichever one I aim at and fire locks on, and doesn't seem to want to swap for anything until that target is defeated. Would be nice to know if there is a way to change targets, to unlock, etc.
But, again... no real guides, or they are near impossible to find, as a search for "STO Console Keybinds" returns tons of info on how to use a controller on PC, and searching for "STO Console Guide" returns the expected assistance with picking best consoles for Tac/Sci/Eng. The game doesn't really offer much assistance INSIDE the game, either, with almost zero types of guides, and the options menu doesn't even include a keybind section to list what buttons do what. So, how to do all kinds of things would be an amazing video and guide to have around.
I ran single energy weapon set ups for a long time using the corresponding console, then I found out about tac consoles boosting not types of energy but weapon type. Its a personal opinion, of course, but I found it a bit more fun to do. Although what you say should be a tooltip for first time players. I wish I had this video back in the day.
The weapons type console give a little less boost but still get the job done and if it is fun that is all that matters.
If I recall, the regular very rare mark 12 consoles are 30% for energy type but 20% for weapon type
@@matthewday7565 The Bellum Directed Energy Manifold at 12 very rare gives 25% damage and it can get almost to 30. I have 4 level 15 on my Oddisey giving out 29.7 at very rare. I'd imagine that at ultra rare or epic could get past that 30%
An enormous help. Brilliant.
Hmm I heard that the tiers, fast ranking to get the ships you wanted. The ppl had an issue.
The game issues like not being assigned to the ship you choose. Cooldowns too.
Random info... If you plan to upgrade weapons, try to grab Mark 2's. Because the chance of a quality upgrade on those is much much higher than a Mark 12. That is why I keep a level 9 character to use when I want to open a weapon coffer. That character will get a Mark 2 weapon.
Also, do not upgrade any gear until you reach at least Mk XII gear capability and have learned what works for you and what doesn't.
Only upgrade your stuff during the upgrade weekends. You get 2X the upgrade points.
I didnt even knew upgrade weekends were a thing :(((((
If different types of beams mater to you just use generic beam consoles, that way you can benefit from different beam properties and still buff all of your beams.
You lose 10% Cat1 boost per tac console and the sets usually don't boost _other_ damage types.
It can make sense though. I have a Byr'Jai with Withering Disruptor DBBs, and since there are no WD omnis, I use an Antiproton Omni because they look similar.
A torp is good for burst damage. Target has taken a lot of damage but your power boosts wear out and you have an Aux battery off cd, launch the torps to finish off your multiple targets.
Just make sure the target's shields are down first. 🖖😉👍
Why do you keep your ability interface 4 and 3, when you could just have them 3 and 3?
great job 👏👍
I changed to phasers (my prefered weapon) and put in a tactical consol for increased phaser damage but when i mouse over the phaser beam the damage doesnt change.
Edit: I was on my ship and I saw the difference there. missed that little nugget. thanks for the guide.
Might Mention.. the "Alienware Arena "Star Trek Online - Tholian Incursion Pack Giveaway" , got a pet, sword, and elite services promo for a character.
Only about 1800 keys left. (PC Exclusive edit)
thank you
Hey Stu, thought you might like to know that during the sale, I got the boozeman class
The problem I'm having after coming back to this game after over a decade is that, i don't get the chance to shoot... everything is dead before i get there in any TFO... I activate my fireing mode, but it's dead before i start firing... Not sure what i should even be doing at this point. The few times i DO get to shoot at something it's like throwing an egg at a brick wall.
I just don't know where all this damage people do comes from primarily, what should i be looking to work on FIRST? Where do i start. =/ it's all very overwhelming for me, all i have is an old T5U Strategic Vesta that was set up for the Aux phaser build back in my day, it just seems to be like throwing wet noodles... And I'm using ALL my abilities, is it because Aux cannons simply can't take advantage of the more numerous abilities that buff weapon power levels?
Well as you can do 1m++ dps with mixing energy type in 2023 in STO people saying you should not mix energy damage type is outdated info. You can do more DPS without mixing yes will you do 10 dps and not be able to play the game when mixing energy damage type no. Use 2023 info, not 2015 info Mr. UA-camr. The rest of the video is excellent and new players should follow :)))
Yes, you can do mixed weapons builds that do well, but not has a new player. A new player that is not fully leveled should not mix damage typle. Much easier this way to start off.....
What is turn-base, I'm assuming the higher the rate, the slower it turns, and the lower the quicker it turns
You put four 💵💵💵💵 in your Fore weapon slots, a 💳 in your deflector and tactical, and the rest you supplement with your life savings 💰. Your ship will be OP💸!
Can you adjust your levels on console as you can on PC
Can you do a update on how to complete the tour of the galaxy i never seem to complete it and all the guides out old
Is it just me, or does space screw up the firing of beams if you spam press it? Sometimes I press it to start other bits, and it'll straight up like, eat my BO or FAW or something. Like, it won't even activate because I spammed the spacebar. Is it just me?
I bought STO for my son to play on an old computer we upgraded for playing older games. We can't get past the cryptic launcher auto update screen. It just takes forever to load then it stops and does nothing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
i just started playing i need a guide for everything in STO lol. I almost quit last night cuz i know what nothing means!
This playlist should help. ua-cam.com/play/PLXRniClXbLvMzBFRSKsPX9EekEWjh2sIv.html&si=IiH4NESNj7zp6m8U
I would inform players about the futility of 2.5% procs. Also that 5% procs are still hit or miss for effectiveness.
Yep, good point
Is there a way you can manually adjust your settings on console?
Got a 101 for elite build tips and such?
I never knew you could turn up the settings.
So question. I’ve been running the beam overload build but I also have attack pattern beta and emergency power to weapons. Does the effect of all of those together stack? Because I’ve been triggering them all at the same time and it seems to work but I don’t want to be wasting a skill click if I don’t have to.
Yes, they stack, that is how you should do it to get the most out of it.
I’ve been crafting weapons - phaser arrays and I crafted the tactical phaser relay console
They are both Mark IV, do you think that was wise or should I have waited till I’m a higher rank and had more resources to use?
I’ve only been playing for about 4 months now
Lol...yeah! If they'd fix the load out system!!
what about consoles that boost specific weapon types ie cannons can it be traded for dmg type ?
Yes and you will get more out of the consoles that boot specific dmg types.
I’m trying to better my build I’ve been a veteran player just been depending on universal consoles I need to reduce my build no more then 4 universal consoles so which are the top 5 tactical science and engineering consoles? I also like running quad cannons blade mines and 3x omni I do like least one torpedo and which is the best experimental weapon
Experimental weapon perfer 360 arc
And don't forget.. for some stupid reason, cannon powers are a rank higher than beam powers. So on a low-level ship stick to beams.
NOOB QUESTION ALERT!
Does this build (per say) include ANY BEAM?
eg are disrupters "BEAMS" and does "Beam Overload" work with disrupters?
Yes, any type of beams, just changing the beams and tac consoles with the match damage type
Thanks for the reply @@MCStu I just started playing late last week... so still learning.
Your videos help a lot.
And always do events. Even if you think the free ship looks stupid, or the console they reward isn't for the energy type you're using, DO IT! If you miss it, you may miss it forever or it will be so incredibly expensive / RNG that you will regret not doing it.
Plus most of the events stuff is account wide. So even if your current character doesn't want to use it, a character you making the future might. 🧠
I need to know how to keybind. Can you do a vid on it. 😭🔥💸

I just subscribed, ive always wanted to get into Star trek online, im so sick of star trek fleet command, its a pay wall type game, i mean really bad. Can you just buy ships with real money in Star trek online? In fleet command you can but just certain one's, my question really is how can i get the 1701 refit enterprise?
I like Miranda bit I need more firepower
I started sto in closed beta and stopped before it went F2P just getting back in...
Slot beams and moar beams ...smash spacebar.
Can someone help me just new into game and have low funds if could would get 12th or 10th Anniversary ed. But for low just starting wondering if Cross Faction Battlecruiser T6 bundle to get Arbiter n 2 other ships for 3900 zen to basically go f2p for long time after and get me through most of the game. This good way to go?
Don't do the cross faction bundles, they are the same ships just look different. 10th anniversary is best value for what you get or the 12th anniversary....
@@MCStu do you happen to know when they offer bonus zen to the packages is it a 1x thing or do u get the bonus on all your packages of zen order as long as in that 3 day or so window period? Like 200$ would give 27k zen do get 27k every 200$ spend in that 3days. Or 27k 1st time then 23k zen after

_whispers... I never use photonic officer_ 😱 Unless you're going to be one of those insane MAX DEEPS! players; a T5 or T6 ship with even purple quality Mark 15 weapons easily handles Normal and Advanced level combat. This game is not hard.
Good but it don't tell you how or where to do all this on star trek online ps4
Do you play on PS5 also?
Just PC

Nooooooooooooooooooooooo, my toons have been deleted eh hee...start from scatch awesome
you are serious about getting out of the guides we are no longer during and before The Legacy of Romulus extension I am not against it but the game play has not evolved after the extension….
Wait a minute, your level 65+. A lot of your viewers are 20 through 50 level. How about make a character and show people at level 20 what they need to be doing. Show people what to do at level 30. You've got all your reputation you've got everything maxed out but you're trying to tell somebody what to do That's all well and good but show the people how you are doing it while you are at that low level. Thank you
how do you do this on console (the PS5/4?
