Oh my God Oh my God Oh my God!
What an eye-opening episode! The way you showed the contrast between the explicit and the subtle approach to voice modulation was just mind-blowing. It's all these choices, isn't it? Thank you so much for being so candid about your shared convictions that are the steps that lead to the temple of unmistakably, undoubtedly great music!

Thank you for answering an important question. A lot of youngsters learned Carnatic music because they wanted to sing like Yesudas, SPB or S. Janaki whose film songs they listen to all the time. Imitating your idol’s voice is a misstep a lot of us make in the formative years. It takes years to realize (at least in my case) that only in one’s own natural voice one can execute the intended sangathis and express bhava. Pranams to Ra Ga sisters!

Extremely deep subject but explained in a very simple way even a child can understand. I am watching thus vedio with my 9 year old daughter who is learning Carnatic music. Such a pleasure that she gets her weekly dose of musical knowledge from RA GA themselves. Thanks a lot

Monday morning blues prevented me from completing the watching of Episode 6 last week and had this wonderful Episode 7 already out. Completed both. Excellent demonstration of how internalising a song paves the way for all those moving, goosebump renditions that we hear. And an excellent krithi - one of my all-time favourites - as an example made it very special for me.

I always hear your songs both day and night. Not a single day pass out with out hearing your voice. Feel blessed. Regards . God bless you both

What an episode! Film song composed, learned and recorded in few hours! Some of them rule the top charts for years, and the singers become over night celebrities winning many awards! A lot of dynamics are involved in singing these songs! Compare that to a composition full of Kampitha Gamakas, Anuswarams and many many layers of intricacies and technicalities to be learnt and practiced over many 100 times, only to present it in an acceptable way involves years of Sadhana, focus, determination and a "Zest" to understand what is Nadopasana (Nada Upasana) to reach the Soul! A lot of "take away" from this episode!

Having known nothing about carnatic music, I happened to come across one of your concerts on UA-cam. That changed everything! Have been a huge fan of yours ever since, and of the beautiful music you present. You both give pure joy to your listeners and exude not just brilliance in singing but humility, positivity and passion for the art. Love you. Stay blessed!

I accidentally saw your RaGa episode today and i continued seeing 3 more episodes..I thank God very much that I saw this episode..thanks a ton to both of you for sharing your wonderful thoughts about voice modulation. I understood that it has to come from the inner space and that's absolutely right. Thank you RaGa duo from the bottom of my heart.🙏🙏

Practicing minimum 100 times a song and becoming a part of it ...... That's the thing ....True.....,,,😊😊..No need to learn the modulations. ....It will come from heart as we immerse in that raga, composition, and all.......I loved this point in this episode...It's true....,☺👍

Again so refreshing and and vibrant. You explain the things whith such a joy and from the bottom of your hearts, that it reaches us so clear and beautifully..... *You become the song* that is the moment you are in your Essence and you can take the listener to that place too..... That for sure, is the miracle of Music .... Blessings for you two and thank you for being who you are 🙏

    Such deep understanding!
    Beautiful perception!!
I appreciate, applaud your beautiful explanation.. tears rolled down my eyes with joy..
Raaga, Taala, Lyric, are all miniature universes in themselves... we can consider any of those paths, pull in contrasts among each component, to immerse ourselves and experience, explore music! Very well said!
Internalizing the music is much much deeper than superficially looking at it, be it just the expressions..
I look forward for more such insightful videos of yours! :)

Ranjani and Gayatri, you made it very clear that Music is beyond Philosophy, Spiritualism, Lyrics, the Raga Bhava and the likes; it is internalizing these aspects and beyond to get the "Soul" is all about. Your compare and contrast examples of Mukhari, a Bhajan and a film song was perfect to bring out the essence!!!! Your presentations are also very organic, done very well.

    Respected Ra Ga duo
Thank you both for another cherishing episode
The humming of baho mein chale aa, was, oh, sooper
Rendition of Enrikku Shiva krupa was soul filling
    Intangible, intuitive, profound, wow phrases
You quoted the great U Shrinivas, I feel his departure was the biggest loss to this globe, but its five years plus n he continues to live through his music, his rendition of jagadeeshwari in mohanam is one of my hot fav, if time permits you may kindly do an episode on him
Internalising the composition n we becoming the song is an awesome thought

When I finished listening to this episode of your exquisite series, I said to myself, "my God, these ladies are now in serious trouble. Even they will find it difficult to eclipse this 16-minute masterpiece of theirs, on a subject of not only tremendous importance to performing artistes in Carnatic music but much misunderstanding. No one could have put across the topic of how to sing kritis better than this.
And your impeccable humor came through beautifully -- you started with the phrase voice modulation as if it was something crucial and systematically tore it up as completely irrelevant to good kacheri dharma. Wow! What particularly impressed me was that you minced no words about the cringe-worthiness of 'expressive' classical music, and were quite blunt. You also resisted the temptation to give examples of singers who've done it and are doing it. (I would have found it difficult!)
The examples you gave and the maestros you referred to also deserves mention. You are spot on when you explain how these people made no artificial changes to their voice even when singing a very evocative kriti like Varugalamo but could still bring tears to one's eyes. The last bit about how this can be done only after tons of practice - except for God's children like mandolin Srinivas -- again was a revelation.
Wow again. Let me see you outdo this episode. Bahur mushkil hoga. (But I guess you will.)

This is just mesmerizing . Mind boggling conversation between you two . I think Gayatri mam would be the best for singing film songs because her voice sounds honestly like latha mangeshkar to me . Honestly , gayatri mam , you're way sweeter than lata mangeshkar . I'm sorry to tell this about lata mangeshkar but it's just my opinion .I am being Frank in telling gayatri mam is a sweetheart . Truly and absolutely . Not lying at all . 😊♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️. I'm being candid on this note . She possesses such a sweet melodious voice which would be the best for film songs . Ranjani mam , oh my god the way you explain the nuances and intricacies of Carnatic music tells me that you are the technically equipped and the best musician anybody could ask for . Frankly Ranjani mam will be the best teacher if I can say . It was easy for me to understand this free wheeling conversation between you both in full unison . Thanks for giving us a drop into your ocean of golden knowledge . It will definitely help me to climb the steps to that divine temple that Gayatri mam talked about . Gayatri mam is very imaginative and thus is her elegant voice and voice as she traverses through all the unimaginable spheres . Admiring you both is a blessing that I received after many birth and I consider it fulfilled . 😉 .. 💙 And a side note too , you both are very August musicians and the best . No words apart from this . 💖💕💙

Your program is very useful, informative. Enjoyable like your concerts. Being a student, I am benefitted by you great musicians. But I freak out wondering what I am learning, what I am singing, standing in front of this ocean called music. My request : please, in the coming episodes, tell us how to avoid becoming apprehensive and deffident. This is happening though I never compare myself with any singer, let alone super stars like you. I get worried whether I succeed in my exams and I have no intention of making music as my career. I am very passionate about music. Please advice. Thank you.

I would like to follow up my general statement with a more specific question related to music. I am past 6 decades in my age. I have been listening to Carnatic Music from my childhood. I truly enjoy listening to the music. Somehow, I tend to focus more on "sahityam of the song" and when I know the meaning of the song, I enjoy more. However, how much ever I have tried, I have not been able learn the aspect of identifying the raagam of a kriti. How much of identifying raagam will help enjoying the music more. Am I missing something because I cannot identify the raagam. May be that will also help me to enjoy "aalapana" more. Please comment on this aspect. Thanks.

    • @warpa2007

One does not require to identify any part of music to enjoy it. Music touches the heart. If you are not identifying the patterns of swaras to identify the raagas, no big deal. It is like taking medicine without knowing the chemical components. It still does its work right?

Must be an oft asked question. While I don't want to take names but a lot of us, rasikas, have experienced tears of tripti when MS Amma sang Kurai Ondrum Illai. There are many such renditions which have become 'signature' songs attached to vidhwans. In all this what hits our hearts is 'Bhakti'. Devotion to music can also be perceived as Bhakti but is an art not different when it's performed as an expression of that Bhakti ? :)

Mandolin Srinivas was a gifted musician. One must only listen to his music to experience him. That Entha muddo where he played beautifully is available in youtube. I wish he lived atleast 100 years.

It was a brilliant episode! And I'm very happy to note that one of my questions was answered brilliantly! Thank you dear ma'ams! Also.. The way you showed us the contrast between how film music is rendered.. And how our very own carnatic music must be delivered.. It was crystal clear! Thank you for another very informative and brilliant episode! 😊
