Within the larger global context of climate change, it is essential to build climate-resilience within our communities and cities to ensure that these landscapes serve a deeper ecological purpose. Canadian school grounds need to be redesigned for our children, communities and the natural world.
    About The Pilot:
Situated in Milton, Ontario, the Irma Coulson Public School (ICPS) Pilot engaged Evergreen’s Climate Ready Schools program in partnership with the Halton District School Board in transforming ICPS's school ground into a vibrant and diverse green space for outdoor learning thus becoming Canada’s first ever climate ready school.

Through our participatory design process, Evergreen worked with the school board, international and local landscape architects, consultants, risk management specialists, the entire school team (principal, teachers, students) and wider community to create a space that reflects best practices in school ground design while meeting the needs and desires of the community.
Launched on October 6, 2022, this school ground provides a unique opportunity for the Halton District School Board and Irma Coulson Public School staff to share knowledge and experiences, to develop and inspire new approaches to learning at other schools and across school boards in reimagining school grounds as climate adaptive landscapes that address flooding while also providing valuable green space that is accessible to the broader community.
We thank The Balsam Foundation, Intact Foundation and other key supporters for generously funding and supporting this project.
