I'd hate to have to play those chords - what a brilliant guitar player song writer and performer but most of all no ego which makes Roddy so likeable - I have followed him for 40 years now and I have loved every minute of his long career.

I was always a bit ambivalent about Roddy/Aztec Camera back in the 80s. I think it might have been because he was almost the same age as me when he became famous and he could already play guitar like God. I couldn't and it pissed me off. This explanation makes no sense because Johnny Marr was almost the same age and I loved "The Smiths" without reservation. Anyway. To get back to my point. I started listening to Roddy's solo stuff about 6 months ago after randomly alighting on his Neil Finn, Graham Gould session (altho I remember the original TV show). Roddy you're truly great. Surf, Western Skies, Over You, Small World. Jesus. What a talent. And all those ringing open string chords...Beautiful.
is a very interesting and honestly thoughtful comment, I discovered aztec camera, 6 years ago, I liked to know in the eighties so I do not remember that I had radio broadcast in my country or at least I do not remember I was 7 years old in 1980 . In the eighties I also enjoy the Smiths, well I still do.

I know Johnny Marr said Walk out to Winter inspired him to write a hit in a major key, something happy-which led to This Charming Man. But as out of left field JM can seem with some of his stuff, the more I listen to Roddy, I can hear a lot of his playing influencing JM. Johnny definitely took it his own way with all his layering and guitar architecture, but I have no doubt Roddy made a big impact on Johnny's direction.
Can anyone tell me why Roddy rubs the top of his guitar at the end of the song? I’ve seen him do it on other songs, and its always piqued my curiosity. I have no musical or guitar background.
Roddy is seriously underrated both as a performer and writer. Songs from the soul performed with passion.
