This anime has no respect for the original title. Is "葬送のフリーレン(Funeral Frieren)" actually "End of the Journey" lol It's hilarious that the subtitle of the first episode is the title of the anime lol The "葬送(funeral)" in "葬送のフリーレン(Funeral Frieren)" means to send off the dead. Frieren, who has a longer lifespan than humans, meets people and sees them off as they die. This "End of the Journey" is a childish title that doesn't understand the essence of this anime.
I think my favorite thing about this show is it will constantly hit you with sadness that brings you to tears, but it will never leave you in that sadness. It always follows that sadness with levity and a smile. Its so incredibly healing and is why its my favorite show all-time. Enjoy the journey.
Best way to think about this anime is "Party defeats Sauron, elf has a "I'm immortal, my lives work is completed, and all my friends are dead" existential crisis."
Omg! As someone who JUST recently watched and fell in love with Lord of the Rings, this analogy is absolutely perfect. We're soo intrigued to see how this unfolds!
There is some talk that the reason Himmel aged faster than Heiter is the Shadow Dragon horn that Himmel stored in the cabinet of his bedroom for those 50 years.
One word of caution. Keep a box of tissue handy at all times because you will need them, not just for the sad moments, but also for the happy ones too. Frieren will troll all your feels that have names, and many that have no name, so "Your name" is Frieren?
I hope you enjoy this anime, it is great! The first episode of this anime was originally planned to be released as a 90 minute movie but was instead changed into 4 episodes released on the same day. To get the full sense of the anime you should watch the first 4 episodes before deciding if you want to continue. That being said I believe you will like it enough to continue the series.
That’s so fascinating! A 90-minute intro sounds like it would have been an amazing way to start the series. We’re really loving the vibe so far, so we’re excited to see how the story unfolds in the next few episodes!
Its get never boring to see people watching Frieren. /edit: i forgot a small Funfact: From Lissbon to Beijing a roundtrip is 314 days and over 33000km. It took them 10 years in a roundtrip so the Country is actual rly rly huge
Frieren = Freeze/Cold Eisen = Iron Heiter = Cheerful Himmel = Sky The usage of those german words describes some aspects of each character. And most of the names are in German too.
Welcome to the journey's end! I hope you have a marvelous time here! It's such a phenomenal, beautifully told story. I have to ask, what's the intro song you used at the beginning? It sounds so cool.
Another fresh reaction to Frieren! If you're several episodes ahead, I'm sure you've got the pronunciation of the German words better by now. They hold a lot of meaning, as does a lot of stuff. One thing I do when watching a lot of subtitled shows is briefly switch to dub to hear how native English speakers pronounce it, then switch back. Sub-titles is the way to go for this as the original VAs are excellent and the dialogue feels much more natural. Looking forward to more!
That’s such a smart trick-we’ll have to try that! We’re trying to get better with the pronunciations as we go, but there’s still a lot to learn! 🤣 The original voice acting really does bring out the emotion, and we love how natural it feels. But definitely trying out your suggestion for pronunciation. Thanks so much for watching with us!
@@AnimeNewbies German here, a little help with the meaning and pronounciation of the names so far. Frieren (to freeze, being cold): Free-renn Himmel (heaven or sky): Him-mell Heiter (jolly or bright): High-terr Eisen (iron): I-senn Fern (distant, far away): fehrn
They are German words though, both the Japense and the English VAs get some of them wrong. If you want to be accurate you would need the German dub. Just don't worry too much about it
Good choice watching frieren and also with original subtitles, many people watch with dub when it is very incompatible and strange, frieren is the number 1 anime in top anime in myanimelist with the highest rating of 9.30 exceeding other anime 😁
The subs-only Karens are as predictable as they are annoying. But the reality is that if the producers of anime such as Frieren didn't want people to watch them in languages other than Japanese, they would not have made those versions in the first place.
@@DavidGarcia-kw4sf I don't have a strong preference to sub or dub normally, but the dub for this anime makes some really weird choices in translation though. When she says, "Don't pat my head," at the funeral in this scene, the dub changes it to, "My head is still not for petting." It's so cumbersome in how its phrased and doesn't hit the same for me. There's a lot of scenes like this where the translator have taken a lot of liberty with how they phrase things, instead of merely changing the script to English. I get things are always lost in translation, and there's different types of translation (translating literally vs translating to get the spirit of what is being said) but there are so many moments with this particular dub that really don't hit as well, IMO.
@@Calder90 I personally like these kinds of adaptations. In my opinion they give the world a more antique feel that reminds me of the approach of someone like Tolkien. The language should not sound modern.

1:05 Yes, "An Elf Going On A Trip Somewhere" is probably the most accurate description of this series.
That's an oversimplification. It's much deeper than that
@@testing85 True. She has a defined destination.

I feel like the more logical reasoning is Heiter was a priest with holy powers which enabled him to live a little longer than average
Yall have embarked on a journey of absolute peak. Get ready!
Yay, let's go! If episode 1 is any indication, this is gonna be something special

no one ever gets the heiter joke about drinking on the job.

Not just character names. Monster species names and place names. Only a very few are not.
So why do they not have ice, air and metalbending powers (and Heiter can have the Heart ring to summon the Planet Fern)
@@whade62000 Because this is a different story, in a different world,
@@whade62000 someone DOES have ice powers... later on.
