Abba Okoro Did YOU watch the video? It could potentially destroy multiple UA-camr's careers. Mistake or not, Microsoft fucked these people over. Just because it was a mistake doesn't mean it didn't affect people. Microsoft shouldn't have been issuing copyright strikes against anyone.
Abba Okoro Sure it's fixable. Has it been fixed yet? No. Has it negatively affected people heavily? Yes. This isn't a case of a simple mistake, this is a case of a mistake devastating people, or at least the potential. Not all mistakes just need a pat on the back and an apology to be fixed. You seem to live in a world of rainbows and sunshine.
Blaziken584 This isn't Microsoft directly. It's more of a problem with Google. Yeah, that company representing Microsoft screwed up in a big way and hopefully Microsoft terminates their relationship with them, but at the end of the day this is one of many examples of Google's overzealous protection mechanisms.
Abba Okoro You are correct, they are "disputable" in the sense that your requests are usually ignored anyway. Though I "sidestepped" it because how is it even relevant?
Abba Okoro You've missed basically every point from what I can tell. Google didn't issue anything. It was Microsoft's algorithm that fucked it up, Google only supplied it the tools. But no, I can guarantee that most of the time the issuer ignores what the UA-camr responds with, as it's all automated. And I still have no idea what that last sentence is trying to say.

Lol neither have I, everything else is either thru a friends MSDN sub, or some free software from work, or either like you pirated, M$ doesn't deserve a dime
Giving your opinion about a product is covered by fair usage laws... Microsoft could possibly get into deep legal trouble for filing false DMCA takedowns.
If you have to make people download the videos, then why not use a tracker and bittorrent. It keeps track of complete downloads, thus allowing for stats, and it is easier on the server's bandwidth, as within a few 3-4 hours, someone with a 20mbit connection can have a complete file in the hands of nearly a million people. There are many legit uses for the service, and a number of radio shows distribute their archives using bittorrent (including really popular ones such as free talk live).
No, no, no! Torrents are copyright violations, don't you know? If he links to one in his description or the comment section he might as well hand himself over to the flag brigade. Those algorithms aren't playing around children.
Anonymiter Torrents can be used to transmit copyrighted content, but so can every other protocol that can transfer data. You can even transfer pirated software over HAM radio. The thing is that torrents have many benefits. For large scale distribution it is far more efficient than any other system as it allows a dedicated server to send content to millions of people while only using a small amount of bandwidth. for example www.freetalklive.com/listen/archives In an ideal scenario, if everyone seeds 100%, then a single person can upload a 10MB file and 7 billion people can receive that file without the original uploader having to upload more than 10MB. Even better, it has no downtime for seeded content as even if the main server were to die a second after a full upload, as long as the person who has the full file seeds enough for someone else to get the full file, they can then give others the file also. (and in systems with good uploads across multiple clients, user 1 can upload to user 2 at 100mbit/s while user 2 at the same time is uploading to user 3 at 100mbit/s. it is one of the most efficient distribution methods ever created. The use of torrents does not imply copyright infringement, it just implies that someone is using a different distribution method.
I kind of blame google too, it is them who own and admin the site. Why don't they have a departament to see who do ilegal videos and who just mention Windows.
Darek Amadeus ok so i see Microsoft complains about comments associated with videos that were on UA-cam. Google removes the videos because there was some miscommunication/misunderstanding between Microsoft and Google about what they wanted removed. So, Google removes the videos. How is it microsoft's fault? Ultimately, this is Google's reponsibility and they need to figure out a better system for content removal.
I blame the MPPA and RIAA the faceless front ends for faceless multinational corporations who have bought "copyright" Laws in the USA and are further trying to extend their control by buying the TPPA, they make Billions but it's not enough they have to squeeze every cent they can from the public. Copyright infringement is NOT a huge problem, honest people buy stuff. poor people pirate when they cannot afford it, some people pirate a movie they would Never buy. it's not hurting corporate profits much at all. and You Tube's FEAR of US Copyright laws virtually forced this current system upon them. and corporate cronyism made the system too open to abuse.
Wow a powerful video Eli! I hope they take note as I and all of the other subscribers love your vids and find them so interesting and informative! Best of luck
I hope everything works out eli! You really are one of the top content creaters on UA-cam. Looking forward i hope something really awesome for you grows out of this mess. I think i can say that all 400k and GROWING subscribers fully support you. Maybe their is something to this petition idea. Good luck!!
Sorry to hear about your misfortune Eli. I have always enjoyed your videos and I hope to see more of them in the future. Justice will prevail, keep the faith.
Support for you Eli. Keep us up to date. Will continue to support you where ever you go on the web! Love ya man, you have help me as an comp sci student as much as any professor.
Man, I just want to say that you are the best IT educator I know of on UA-cam. I am sorry you have to go through that. I use your videos on a constant basis and tell my friends at college about you. That makes me mad.
wow, that is harsh what they did to you Eli the Computer Guy I hope you get a response, and some compensation. If the video is put back up does the first strike get removed?
Wow. I'm speechless. The copyright trolls have no limit on how low they will go. Keep your head up Eli, your content has helped me a lot in my Career. M$ will hopefully get enough PR back last to stop this craziness.
Hi, This video is AMAZING! You have my support, Eli, and hope things will be fine again. You have tought me so many things and it helped me to graduate from high school. So keep fighting! :)
i feel bad for you man. i hope you know that you are an amazing mentor of sorts and that you are going to be fine. you don't need youtube to remain successful...
Sorry Eli. Your content has helped me countless times and this is just ridiculous. They are not only taking away from your business but also form many people that utilize your videos as educational resources in theirs. This has got to stop. you have my support sir.
So sorry to hear your story, also sad that it doesn't even surprise me. I wish I could do something to help... or something more than reposting this as I already have.
One of the things that's sad about this, is that Eli is one of the people who inspired me to learn the Microsoft product and be an IT professional, so if anything, I would think that cases like that would be beneficial to them.
Interesting that the only videos getting flagged are the ones talking down (telling the truth ) about Windows 8. My Co-Host ( FrugalTech) also got flagged for an anti-Win 8 Vid. I on the other hand have several Windows tutorial vids up and nothing flagged. Class action lawsuit?
The videos that are being taken down don't say anything about Windows free. They are being removed because they shed a negative light on Microsucks, pure and simple. Its not a conspiracy, its simply them being pissed that their sucky Windows 8 is getting bad press. They have retracted this recently because they were about to get their asses sued into the ground with a class action suite from several top youtubers.
These image and properties firms are adopting the same terrible "block now and decide later" mindset that patent trolls have been using for years. Sorry to hear about this Eli. I hope all goes in your favor.
You've repeatedly stated in many of your live broadcasts and tutorials that you have backup plans in case UA-cam doesn't go your way with this exact scenario in mind. Yet now you're coming on here being all devastated like a desperate whiny gamer who just got blocked and must face the prospect of having to find a real job. C'mon, Eli! Pull yourself together, man!
Light Yagami I think you're taking my tone too aggressively. A mere reply to your post doesn't mean I'm arguing. :) No chill needed here. Just saying that he's been talking about this exact scenario for years and how he's prepared to smoothly transition to other avenues of broadcasting if such an event occurs. His entire spiel is mitigation such crisis and how awesome he is at it. Time to initiate all those preparedness measures.
The @Microsoft and @MSFTNews twitter accounts cleared this up last night. They are working with YT to correct the issue and remove the strikes. This isn't censorship, or based on the content in the video. The scanner/bot found product keys and/or links to pirate Windows on the pages (in the comments in most cases). The intent was not to take down videos, but the process didn't work as intended.
Man, I love youtube, but I also hate it. It's just so poorly managed it's ridiculous. It's run almost entirely by bots that big corporations (as well as shameless copyright trolls) are capable of manipulating and abusing. UA-cam's management sucks.
***** I would say that Facebook would be the biggest contender for competition (assuming that they want to compete, which i think they are trying to slowly). They seem to be adding more 'video site' type features too their video player/service, with a recommended videos function on mobile. If they did some more upgrading to the video player and to the analytic side of things, it wouldn't be hard to compete since they already have the users, money and power, and also a lot of people like to have all of their different content in one space.
You know, I appealed a claim quoting fair use laws and they sided with me. Something like 4 years later they hit me again for the same video without any warning and gave me a strike. WTF?
I have seen most of your videos Eli and I have never seen you make faces like those in them. You are the best at what you do, and this shouldnt stop you. Keep doing the good work.
That was beautifully articulated. I am now subscribing to you Eli the Computer Guy . Also, UA-cam (Google) should try to remember that they're easily replaceable so they shouldn't piss off their own users so bad or so often. I look forward to new companies competing with these companies in the near future.
mao ting I do think the main problem Eli faces is the money he earns is mostly from the videos he posts on UA-cam. Simply linking to another services doesnt generate the cash he earns from youtube. I feel for your situation Eli the Computer Guy , but the internet is all about one thing. Being able to adapt. There are ways that you can make the short videos option work. Post 3 videos a day, each 15 minutes and put a 1 minute commercial in each of the videos. You segment your videos into chapters and all that. Will google remove the flag you got if you can prove it was unwarranted? Why aren't you mad at Google? Arent they the ones that removed the videos?
Just a sugestion .. divide your videos 15 min each and do a playlist with 1 set that composes 1 video, it's an dumb way of doing it but it's a alternative while you get your stuff sorted. Wish you good luck in your situation
Good on you for making this video. Really enjoy your videos and have learnt a lot from them. Glad to hear that the strike has been lifted and hope that it doesn't happen again
I'm with you, Eli! I've enjoyed watching many of your videos and you know what, Eli ?! You're the best, man !!! As long as i find a working TCP/IP connection between us, i'll watch your great tutorials with same pleasure! Take care, Be safe, Be strong !!!
Bro brooooo The life didnt stop here U already have so many skills in computer U can work in any company And even that u can make a video about a new channel of u And believe me u gonna earn from this and that If cant be u still have the ability to make part 1 2 3 for the same topic Just dont stop U can stand again and all ur subscribers will follow u to the new channel :) be happy I learned so much from u U have nice way to simplify things and make every thing clear Even u can be a teacher in private institute, wish that i can be ur student U r awesome keep it up :)
I agree completly with you Eli. You have provided top quality videos over the years and I hope you continue to do so. Microsoft is going to get my comments on this matter and I will not back down.
I bought an Asus laptop at Best Buy a few months ago. I had laptops and never intended to buy one but I had to relocate to another part of the country and needed something portable so I got this one. Immediately I realized that I absolutely detest windows 8. WTF were they thinking? This is the absolute most asinine thing microbrain has come up with so far. It opens to a ridiculous screen of aps with no obvious way to navigate anywhere. I lost about half my functionality. One of the things I like to do is open multiple calculators. Windows 8 won't do that. I could go on but I don't have to because I know a lot of other people are having the same issues. So I took this computer back to Best Buy to demand they install windows 7 on it and the guy laughed at me and said he would be arrested if he tried. When I told him how much I hated windows 8 he said I was crazy and that it was the best thing to happen to computers. When I enquired where I might get a copy of windows 7 to put it on my computer he said that if I tried I would be arrested because by purchasing the laptop I agreed to only use windows 8 on the machine and that changing the op system would be a criminal offense. I told him I was going to have Linux installed and be done with Microsoft and he said I would still be arrested for violating my agreement. I told the guy to fuck off and I stormed off. I am so infuriated with Microsoft. I hope their stock plummets to 3 cents a share.
Eli, I just followed you on twitter in case these clowns pull you out of youtube. I don't care if you switch over to vimeo or whatever the next video site is, I'll follow you and I'll keep telling my friends about the excellent content you produce. You've done so much to help advance my tech career, and I wanted to thank you. Just when I was starting to gain a little respect for micro$oft, they found a way to anger me enough to not buy or recommend their products.
Damn Eli that's really a messed up situation to be in. It's funny how people think creating a UA-cam channel on educational material is a simple thing...when in fact it's not. Much respect to you for the material you've offered and hoping you can continue to do so in the future. Having worked for some of the big corps I know how frustrating it is when they clamp down on the little guys or those following the rules, and ASAP doesn't mean a damn thing to them in all reality. Keep your head and hopefully this will clear up real soon.
This is complete bullshit. Is UA-cam under the impression that everyone is a copyrights law expert? Unless you study copyright law, there's no way an average person can understand all the intricacies of copyright law. How is that fair? You get 3 strikes, yet there are hundreds of different ways in which you can get a strike. Complete bullshit.
you should read the terms and condition before making videos. rules are clear. i also think that the strikes are exagerated but if you read shouldn't have a single problem
augusto alejandro cognigni Legal documentation and fine print is intentionally misleading for the layman. I generally read that stuff, but it doesn't mean a damn thing, as we can already see from this video.
in cases like this eli can send a petition to youtube to check that the video iis actually in ordder and they will remove that strike. This is the other company mistake. not youtube
augusto alejandro cognigni I see what you're saying. But an outside company having an impact on the functionality of youtube and it's users is a major fuck up on both youtube's and the other company's part. They both need to get their shit together.
Its all about getting the internet under the control of the people that run things. Copyright will be the legal tactic they use to censor everything. If anything is on youtube then you don't even have to violate the copyright you just have to violate googles terms of service which is more strict than the copyright legal nightmare that is law.
Google, please support to solve problem for this good guy who has been contribute good things to social. Microsoft, please be patient to learn for community to improve your products. Eli, please don't give up. We are supporting you. May you create link which we can easy share this video with my friends in social media like Facebook , twister, etc.
This circus from Microsoft will be over soon...Thanks for people like you,and other guys, people can fix problems with their PC's,and technicians can expand their experience.
Hey Eli. In my opinion you only have the best channel on youtube. Sure this will get straightened out. Keep up the good work. Your a survivor we all know that and I'm sure we will all follow you in any new projects you take on
I would advise you to invest in a website. That way you are free to create your videos without any worries of copyright strikes, you can still monetize your videos and promote your sponsors. Still have everything on UA-cam, but also upload it to your website. My 2 cents, good luck.
What Microsoft did is just outrageous. I've learnt a lot from your Windows Server 2012 videos, Eli, and I do hope you make it out of this alive and kicking. However, this FTP server plan and getting people to download videos does not sound like a good idea, so I've come here to suggest something different as a last resort of saving your channel. There is this project called GNU MediaGoblin that seems like an interesting alternative to major media publishing services like UA-cam. If you're hard-pressed and decide to resort to setting up your own server then this might be a hell lot better idea than a plain FTP ;)
Microsoft seems to be lining themselves up for one massive class action lawsuit for damaging the incomes of content creators. Good luck Eli. I've shared your video on all my social networks.
this is why I don't use any Microsoft products, nor those from Adobe.... these companies are not rich from sharing, but from holding back technology... You dissed using linux as a desktop once, but these days it's very efficient
Google is definitely to blame for the crappy way they deal with erroneous copyright strikes. If a copyright strike is made, and is later lifted, that should NOT go on the UA-cam channel's "rap sheet". Same thing with the "soft" copyright claims where the claimer gets the ad revenue as soon as they make the claim. That is wrong on so many levels. Hold the revenue, and give it to the rightful part AFTER claims, disputes of claims and counter claims have been sorted out. And repeat offenders of filing false claims should be blocked. They don't need a manual review board or anything for that, just a fairer rule system, that can still me automated. Google wants quality content on UA-cam, yet they treat the creators of said content like presumed criminals. Microsoft screwed up and don't quite understand the impact of their screw-up, because they don't understand the reality of UA-cam, or the bad PR they just earned themselves. That's inevitably gonna happen time and again with different companies. Google should understand, but doesn't give a crap. They are the bigger problem here IMO.
This is actually a really good point. Did you hear that Google ? You're partly to blame for allowing UA-cam to function this way. Your workers include us, the viewers. Without people uploading and viewing you have nothing with youtube. If we can't watch the his content because his channel is being fucked with, then maybe you should...how did you put it? Not be evil? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don't_be_evil Maybe Google should reach Microsoft and say, "hey, your copyright claim is bullshit and we're going to wait until you have ground to stand on before we allow you to push the little guy down"
That company is inevitably going down the drain anyways. The ingenuity of the 80's, the performance of the 90's & 2000 are gone. The last great version of the software is and will remain windows 7. Since the day they adopted the tetris look, they started sinking bad.
Definitely dedicate to Linux Eli. I think you would fair well with viewers like myself who look for regular content in that arena as well as open source. Also, have you considered more hardware geared videos? Eg; actual pc hardware reviews and or builds, etc... Either way, kudos for speaking so frankly. I just wish Linux could make the final leap which is so close pertaining to supporting software (accounting, gaming, design, etc..). I really think you could stimulate a lot of interest and activity because of how strong the Linux community has grown. I'll be watching my friend, good luck!
I'm sure that this is just a stunt on Microsoft's part. It doesn't seem that they have any legal ground at all, as Eli pointed out, there is no way in hell Microsoft can legally claim copyright infringement. I've learned a bunch from you Eli, and have applied a lot of information you have shared with us at my first IT job in a Cisco data center, then later in a Microsoft data center. Yes, ironically I was working in a Microsoft data center for about 2.5 years, and it was the worst team I have ever collaborated with in my life!!! I better shut up though before Microsoft decides to sue me as another one of their stunts! Bottom line, please keep doing what you do and we will keep watching and learning!
Dude! What is MS thinking!? This has pissed me off and a couple of hours ago I convinced an associate to hold off on a major MS purchase for his company because of this shitty attitude from MS. I'm trying to convince him that his people can do their work as well or better on Linux and save 100k+ to boot. This is a major WTF incident for MS,

many, many reasons.

Yet now you're coming on here being all devastated like a desperate whiny gamer who just got blocked and must face the prospect of having to find a real job. C'mon, Eli! Pull yourself together, man!
Yeah, but he still has the right to be pissed off about it. I know I would be.
Oh, is this him expressing being pissed off? It seems more of a cry and moan than pissed. Especially the bit about having to go to his wife.
Microsoft is terrified and it's all over the news because they made Eli talk to his wife...Oh nooo. Lol

Bro chill out. I'm not even sure what we are arguing about here.
I feel sorry for you, bro. Good luck! I stand with you and i hope your other subscribers do as well.
The intent was not to take down videos, but the process didn't work as intended.
hey Eil what is best toolbar remover
So did UA-cam retract your 1/3 strike Eli?
The video starts out as pretty firm...but that ending. Damn, those were fightin' words!
I use Apple everything. Haven't used windows in years :)
Can you do a video on how to save all my files then install Linux? I've had enough of this big brother shit too.
Man, I love youtube, but I also hate it. It's just so poorly managed it's ridiculous. It's run almost entirely by bots that big corporations (as well as shameless copyright trolls) are capable of manipulating and abusing. UA-cam's management sucks.
It's sorta half youtube and half the DMCA. It started this whole charade.
You Tube needs competition ............BADLY!!
Like Vimeo, Flickr, and Liveleak? Unfortunately, UA-cam is owned by Google and has HUGE saturation and thus market share.
WTF?
Good luck Eli! You've helped me (and so many others), please let us know if there's anything else we can do to help you.
Do you have a backup plan if you cant do youtube anymore?
I do, but I'm not at the point any sane person would want to depend on it...
Well you do have a lot of technical skill so you have a lot of options open.
did you try taking down all the videos with microsoft in it until this "gets fixed"?
mao ting I do think the main problem Eli faces is the money he earns is mostly from the videos he posts on UA-cam.
Even if you stay on UA-cam can we still get the ftp server?
Eli I grow up in my professional career by watching your videos. I learned a lot from you. You have done a great job. We are always with you. Tc.
May I suggest a torrent version of your videos? I mean if you have 40k+ subs I am sure seeding that wouldn't be a problem
Eli, your contribution is amazing. I'm with you. I am sharing :)
I feel for you, Eli. What a shame on Google and Microsoft's part.
Hey Eli, I got hit too. I got 2 Copyright warnings
Hot damn, that got really heated at the end there.
Oh the explanation is very simple. They're hoping this will be the _third_ strike for some of their detractors.
I'm with you, Eli!
I've enjoyed watching many of your videos and you know what, Eli ?! You're the best, man !!!
As long as i find a working TCP/IP connection between us, i'll watch your great tutorials with same pleasure!
Take care, Be safe, Be strong !!!
Subbed, Great passion, very informative, and above all very professional.
Why can't UA-cam just stop having the copyright strike
I am totally with you on this Eli. You guys should all collectively sue microsoft for every single penny you lost because of this.
Bro brooooo
The life didnt stop here
U already have so many skills in computer
U can work in any company
And even that u can make a video about a new channel of u
And believe me u gonna earn from this and that
If cant be u still have the ability to make part 1 2 3 for the same topic
Just dont stop
U can stand again and all ur subscribers will follow u to the new channel :) be happy
I learned so much from u
U have nice way to simplify things and make every thing clear
Even u can be a teacher in private institute, wish that i can be ur student
U r awesome keep it up :)
I agree completly with you Eli. You have provided top quality videos over the years and I hope you continue to do so. Microsoft is going to get my comments on this matter and I will not back down.
WooHoo for the ban lift!!!! bring back the long form:) thanks for ur content Eli
You're brave to put this up. They might take you down for this. I hope everything works out for you.
Just subscribed to you after watching this. I really hope you get this issue solved. I hate that UA-cam 3 strike policy. It just seems so terrible.
Sorry to hear this. Hope it gets better:).
Mine Windows 8.1 Review video has been removed.
I like the "I AM THE ONE WHO KNOCKS" moment at the end. Do videos on Linux. Lots of exciting stuff going on with Linux, Python, NOSQL, and big data.
You have my support, I agree with you entirely!
Complete bullshit.
you should read the terms and condition before making videos. rules are clear. i also think that the strikes are exagerated but if you read shouldn't have a single problem
augusto alejandro cognigni
Legal documentation and fine print is intentionally misleading for the layman. I generally read that stuff, but it doesn't mean a damn thing, as we can already see from this video.
in cases like this eli can send a petition to youtube to check that the video iis actually in ordder and they will remove that strike. This is the other company mistake. not youtube
augusto alejandro cognigni
I see what you're saying. But an outside company having an impact on the functionality of youtube and it's users is a major fuck up on both youtube's and the other company's part. They both need to get their shit together.
Its all about getting the internet under the control of the people that run things. Copyright will be the legal tactic they use to censor everything. If anything is on youtube then you don't even have to violate the copyright you just have to violate googles terms of service which is more strict than the copyright legal nightmare that is law.
but this goes against the right of opinion by Microsoft right ? or does UA-cam not have that ?
I mean that's illegal censorship...
I just wanted to let you know that this video has solidified my decision to boycott microsoft products. You're a good guy, Eli.
Hey Eli. In my opinion you only have the best channel on youtube. Sure this will get straightened out. Keep up the good work. Your a survivor we all know that and I'm sure we will all follow you in any new projects you take on
I am looking forward to seeing the video's on FTP. I am sorry you went through all of this, but only slightly surprised. You have my support.
> not allowed any more than 15 mins of vids.
> makes video 14:58 long.
nice.
I would advise you to invest in a website. That way you are free to create your videos without any worries of copyright strikes, you can still monetize your videos and promote your sponsors. Still have everything on UA-cam, but also upload it to your website. My 2 cents, good luck.
Stay strong will be here to support you
I do hope that you get everything fixed. Your programs are so very very good and informative.
Not be evil? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don't_be_evil
Maybe Google should reach Microsoft and say, "hey, your copyright claim is bullshit and we're going to wait until you have ground to stand on before we allow you to push the little guy down"
will video-bloggers go beyond #microstopped and switch to linux?
Keep doing what you're doing and screw them all ! You're The Man !
Regards from Tunisia, North Africa.
The chilling effect is the big problem.
Im using adblock, you blame me now?
This is proof there needs to be a UA-cam Creators union.
Wow, those are some harsh words at the end of your video directed at Microsoft, but definitely not unwarranted.
This has pissed me off and a couple of hours ago I convinced
an associate to hold off on a major MS purchase for his company
because of this shitty attitude from MS. I'm trying to convince him that
his people can do their work as well or better on Linux and save 100k+
to boot.
This is a major WTF incident for MS,
I was actually able to develop windows 8 from watching this video. Thx Eli.
