Only real major issue in over 2 years was from an aftermarket "autoblip" box that one of the owners had installed. Threw a CEL, put into "limp mode". *points at the Lotus badge* some say it stands for Lots of trouble usually serious. my neighbor back in the early 2000s had a Lotus Esprit he had a few of them in the 90s always loved them always got the ones that had little problems some how lucked out all ex the one he owned when i knew him. his 2000s Lotus Esprit that was nothing but problems and met its death when it hit a pot hole at 55mph and sent the suspension strut through the body. some times you get an Awesome car with normal problems like a normal car. some times you get a nightmare you don't get to ever drive its always down for repair.
This seems like the kind of reputation I can remember super cars like portion, Ferrari and Lamborghini having in the 80s and even into the 90s and early 2000s, but it seems like they outgrew a lot of their issues on the car seem fairly reliable. Generally speaking this sounds like an absolute mess.
Yep. I think alot of that is too do with them becoming part of a larger brand and utilizing that to their advantage. Ferrari & Fiat Chrysler. Lambo and audiVW group. Lotus just joined with Geely who owns Volvo a few years back but the car was never updated to reflect that. The new Emira however you can see the Volvo in it with the electronics, switches and dials.
Woh woh woh, I'm 2 minutes in and this dude hasn't even gotten home yet from driving off the lot and the damn thing has issues already. That's insane, there's lemon laws for that.
No one should have to put up with this. I am sorry your dream did not work out. Thanks for posting. I purchased my dream car second-hand read all the issues and repaired/ renewed all parts myself. Trust no-one, especially a dealer. (JLR) Owner.
OMG. That's a total lemon. Should not have left the factory. How did it pass quality control. Buying a Lotus is a bit of a lottery. Looks like you got on the wrong side of the lottery. Really feel for you man.
Yea it’s interesting to hear different views. There are several people that think its okay and to just deal with it as it a quirk of the car. I feel the brand can’t get better if the owners do not make it a point to bring the issues up.
It's a little bit funny, some of the smaller issues you mention are little things that happen to most cars over time and kind of add to each one's "character". The creaky seat, the trunk, panels rubbing, stuff like that. Not trying to invalidate your problems, if I paid that much for a car than I'd definitely be wanting it to be perfect as well, but it's worth noting the difference between say, a Sentra or Sonata vs a higher end sports car. Things that most people sort of accept and live with become major and expensive annoyances. Drivetrain stuff though, limp mode, CELs, and all of that, whew, that's rough as hell. And if you're replacing 3 MAF sensors, then that ain't your issue lol. Probably a vacuum leak or something. Maybe PCV valve leakage. A lot of these issues sound vacuum related tbh. Those will throw MAF codes and limp mode. In general a lot of those things sound like bad diagnostics. The physical paddles are probably not the issue if multiple paddles are being replaced lol. Probably something to do with the TCM software or wiring. A lot more goes into owning something like this than people realize. These cars aren't produced like manufacturers that make millions of cars worldwide. Every car has its own special jank, but these things are a different level of jank, and I feel bad for the next 2 or 3 owners before it eventually gets parked for good.
i always though that was part of the charm, and character of owning a lotus......constant repairs, and headaches lol! kidding aside, sorry about your troubles.
I know lemon laws vary from state to state, but usually if a car goes in for the 3rd time to fix the same problem (instrument cluster, trunk latch, MAF), cant you make a lemon claim and get ALL you money back? BTW, very happy with my C8 Corvette 😁
I thought if they had to fix something 3 times it’s a possible lemon law candidate? I hope you trade it in because if you show an individual those service records who’s going to buy it. I have a C8. Is that a possibility? Same similar looks and price range.
Clearly some wiring problem wirh this car, should have been redone. Those issues all sound like a bad electrical connection. Its amazing what issues can crop up without good electric foundations.
Seems like since Lotus is such a low production vehicle that the purchasing customer gets to be the "testers" for issues and QC misses. Frustrating when it's something that you really just want to work right.
I may be a little biased, but I recommend a 911. I’m coming up to my first year of ownership and have had ZERO issues with mine. It’s actually been the most reliable sports car I’ve ever owned by a landslide.
They are called LOTUS for a reason, Lots Of Trouble Usually Serious, the legend lives on, the only good thing in it is the engine which is Toyota, the supercharger is not Toyota

@ O I plan too! I just dont plan to purchase anything on the Evora platform again. Looking older like Elise or an Esprit. At least then when it faults its an old British car and to be expected. A bit annoying when its brand new.
@cabuboyvisitacion1298 That's like stepping out of the boiling water and into the fire! Corvettes are not known to be reliable in any way. I've owned them for years....no more.
It seems to me like there was a short somewhere in the car that was frying all of these components. Too bad they didn’t spend the time to root cause why these components were failing. Probably could have saved the car.
Bro this is lotus! You have to understand many people back in the day got these cars because it’s a race car. And you track them. This isn’t a Toyota regardless of the drivetrain. It’s out together with guys that come to work mad or tired and or hungover or going through rough times. They have very little automation is what I’m saying. Anyway enjoy the looks and the props you get going down the road and the rest of the problems you have (WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF LOTUS) hahaha😂❤

This was so stressful to listen to. What a headache! Glad you got rid of it. Looks are just that. Lotus apparently forgot about making something with impressive substance too.
Sorry for your experience. Seems like you had to deal with really bad mechanics. I consider myself a hobby mechanic, and halfway through your story, it was screaming a wiring harness. Own an Evora 2010 for over 8 years and it’s reliable as any good 14 years old car.
@@dylannippleI never used the Lotus warranty as I got it 5 years old, but I never experienced with other cars I own that the manufacturer declined the dealer diagnosis. Not that I consider dealer mechanics as top notch, but at least they see the car. Things like that are really bad for the brand.

You are not wrong by any means. Something to consider though, even the Italians have become relatively reliable. When a newer Ferrari is Audi reliable in 2024, the stereotypical 'British experience' is not good enough. It's not like an Evora is half the price of a Porsche.

Lol 😂
Mine has been flawless for 4 years. Maintenance and thats it.
same
My 04 Celica (1 owner) has only needed a new axle boot in 21 years.
The Lotus Elise used the same 2ZZ-GE Toyota Celica engines in them. Excellent engines!!
This is why i would get an older used manual. Lots Of Trouble Usually Serious is certainly true for this car.
Great that you have not lost money in depreciation
What a nightmare 😢 sorry you had to go through this
This seems like the kind of reputation I can remember super cars like portion, Ferrari and Lamborghini having in the 80s and even into the 90s and early 2000s, but it seems like they outgrew a lot of their issues on the car seem fairly reliable.
Problems started when you bought an IPS -who gets an auto lotus GT 🤦♂️
Its what was available new at the time and qualified for Lotus rebate.
Woh woh woh, I'm 2 minutes in and this dude hasn't even gotten home yet from driving off the lot and the damn thing has issues already. That's insane, there's lemon laws for that.
Right lol 😂
No one should have to put up with this. I am sorry your dream did not work out. Thanks for posting. I purchased my dream car second-hand read all the issues and repaired/ renewed all parts myself. Trust no-one, especially a dealer. (JLR) Owner.
Thanks man! It was pretty rough.
Yea it can be but it shouldn’t be this bad. Many in the forums and groups were shocked at how many issues my car had.
So did you disclose all of this to the new buyer? Or is it they “should” do their own research?
I sold it to the Lotus Dealer that was servicing the car. Not my problem anymore.
Yes. I started process but dealer purchased car for good price. All worked out better
im amazed you put up with that for 3 years 😂
So happy with my Honda Jazz...
Hopefully that extended warranty is transferable to the new owner?
Haha 🤣 nope it was not! So hopefully they buy one in the finance office!
Just from the quality on the old ones I kinda figured these would be big POs
Clearly some wiring problem wirh this car, should have been redone. Those issues all sound like a bad electrical connection. Its amazing what issues can crop up without good electric foundations.
My ‘22 C8 has had oil changes and tire rotations.
Bullet proof.
Mine has been flawless other than the backup camera. What did you have to do to have such bad karma?
Right!!! It was rough. I did all my research before buying and knew there would be a few things FEW!
@@dylannipple So Sorry. My Lotus cars I have had have been the joy of my life, and I wish you could have experienced the same.
Ah yes, the lotus life. Brings back not so fond memories.
Another ringing endorsement of the UK sports car industry. Colin Chapman would be spinning.
Good video!
Thanks so much for sharing
If I’m going to have Lotus issues whether it be new or old, I’ll just wait for the right Esprit to appear for sale (cue James Bond theme music)
Haha 🤣
Wow … what a lemon 🍋
what a shame, im so sorry. Lotus used to be a dream car for me.
They are called LOTUS for a reason, Lots Of Trouble Usually Serious, the legend lives on, the only good thing in it is the engine which is Toyota, the supercharger is not Toyota
Lol 😂. Well the supercharger is a good brand at least, Edelbrock makes them for Lotus.
Are you the guy that came up with that Acronym?
I’ve never had a single issue with my 2021 Evora Gt. It’s been 27000 kms
Mine was clearly a 🍋 based on others responses.
@ I’m really sorry to hear that. Please give Lotus’s another chance, there really isn’t anything else like them on the market. I’m about to get an Elise s3 in a few days lol. I’ve completely fallen for company 😭
@ O I plan too! I just dont plan to purchase anything on the Evora platform again. Looking older like Elise or an Esprit. At least then when it faults its an old British car and to be expected. A bit annoying when its brand new.
Wow! Here I am thinking about purchasing the EMIRA. I don't know we'll see if I can't afford the C8 Z06..
Probably but too late now
I heard it will work perfectly if you off-road it in Argentina.
Haha 🤣 thats a good Top gear episode!
No lemon law in your state?
You should of lemon it at 4,000 miles. I've seen people lemon cars successfully for stupid shit too like the bluetooth didn't work and they replaced the module twice.
I know a guy that just bought a Lotus and the engine blew up when the dealership was test driving it.
Yikes! 😳
I am a career technician but sadly my professional opinion means nothing to the dealers. They do what they can get approved.
@@dylannippleI never used the Lotus warranty as I got it 5 years old, but I never experienced with other cars I own that the manufacturer declined the dealer diagnosis. Not that I consider dealer mechanics as top notch, but at least they see the car. Things like that are really bad for the brand.
@@nintense1 they kept throwing parts at it. The total service bill on the car when I added all the invoices up were around 35% of the msrp. Lol 😂
Thanks for sharing this
I keep hearing stories that make me glad I dropped out of that ridiculous que for an Emira. Looks like I dodged a bullet!
Yea! I almost traded this in on one but last minute dodge a bullet as well! Seems they are having issues with those too.
@@whatsupwithsteve You and I did the same. I bought a much less expensive GR Supra 45th Anniv. Edition and couldn't be happier.
@@davepaturno4290 Congrats Dave! Enjoy that Supra, it's a great ride!! Yeah I just bought a Shelby Supersnake and am having the widebody done on it. I'm an old guy from the heyday of muscle cars so this tickles that big v8/stick shift itch for me..:) The Emira is a cool car I just hope it isn't let down by the folks @ Lotus/Geely...
I must have missed the part where your conscience lead you to a lawyer and Lotus bought the car back, and it was forever titled as a Lemon Law Buyback.
I WAS interested in the Emira.
Sorry Dylan. When I read Lotus Evora, I first thought you had the base Evora, not the GT. Wiring harness issues I imagine for the cluster.
Harness issues for cluster and engine
@@dylannipple I have a friend with a 2010 Evora and he has similar issues with the gauges. He got a WiiYii HUD-G10 on amazon and bypassed the whole cluster. It cost around $25! I know you don't have the car anymore, but just as info. A Lotis is GREAT when it is working, but when it doesn't, ugh! Best going forward.
@ 100% agree I loved the car when it was running correctly!
Imagine all the people telling Mr.Nipple NOT to buy a Lotus and then all this happened
I will never understand a grown man having a dream car that is at most 15 years old.
Damn I was looking to get back into a Lotus….
People buying hand-made, low volume, British exotic cars expecting a robot-built, mass produced "care-free" experience. That's half the problem here.
I expected some issues but nothing like what I ended up with.
@dylannipple That's why I wrote, "half the problem" 🤣
@ Fair enough!
You are not wrong by any means. Something to consider though, even the Italians have become relatively reliable. When a newer Ferrari is Audi reliable in 2024, the stereotypical 'British experience' is not good enough. It's not like an Evora is half the price of a Porsche.
@ exactly
My c8 motor blew at 35k warranty fix. Trans blew at 61k no warranty 😢
Geez!! Thats rough! At least it made it that far before major issues!
Heard pre 2023 C 8 have Tranny issues. Stay away!
Service tech: The more we try to fix it, the more stuff breaks and doesn’t want to stay together. Our advice. Stop fixing it and just sell it.
Wouldn't trade my RS3 for anything! Another great option.
I forgot about those! That has the inline 5 cylinder correct?
@ Yup. If you want the ability to mod easily go with the 8V. Unreal power capabilities. I stay stock on mine and just traded for a ‘24 8Y in Daytona Gray and it’s amazing.
How did you got the rebate if you needed to trade in a “sports car” and you had a Supra ? 😅
I traded in the 2020 BMW supra. They counted it as a sports car.
A Supra is a sports car lmao wtf
Lotus dealer "So are you interested in a new Emira?"
Lol 😂
I'm content with my mustang GT here in Italy
That's truly sucks. Doubt I'll ever buy a car that expensive and would be heart broken after finally being able to then having experience like this. Sorry. I drive a heavily modded NB Miata daily and she been amazing. One of the bulbs in my headlight I changed when I first got it was original. 20 years for a bulb!?.. Build quality and pride of the companies were way better back in the day.
Wow, that is shocking, I have a 21 Evora GT and 24 Emira, and both are problem free. I also had an Elise for 14 years that was problem free.
Yea seems I just got a bad one! 😢
@@dylannipple That stinks, nothing ruins a brand quicker for a buyer when you are faced with what you had happen. Best of luck on your next purchase.
This is why there are lemon laws. 🍋 I’d have lawyered up and been done with it. Sorry to hear of your troubles. I’d never buy a Lotus, even though they’re beautifully styled. Trade it in at a dealership so you don’t pass that lemon on to someone else. Grab yourself an F Type before they’re gone!
At least they got the caliper colour right.
That yellow is fresh right!!!?!?
I've owned an Evora GT for a year trouble free and adore it. Sorry yours hasn't been good.
It will be missed! I hope to get another Lotus again later, just needed to get out of this one while I could before warranty ended.
My 2020 GT with 12K miles has been very reliable. A cosmetic issue covered under warranty is about it. Sounds like you unfortunately got the short stick. Most owner's I've talked to and met are happy with the reliability. Mark Lotus Ltd.
@@MS-fc2sr very much so!
Lotus - Lots of trouble;e usually serious . Past owner of several Lotus. I know your pain.
Well, I've never ever heard anything good about Lotus build quality.. engine reliability... ever....
had the time, the inclination and the money. did a ton of research (2-3 years) and theres two cars I woudlnt touch, dont give a b-b-q'd f... what anyone says. ^ and Audi. They make some realllyyy cool cars and if you get a good one, awesome.. but if you don't. It's endless.
There’s lemon laws in each state that require auto manufacturers to buy back garbage they sell. You should have contacted one and filed suit!
I started the process in Texas it takes longer and dealer offered a good amount to buy me out
You would think the cars reliable because it has a Toyota v6 but I guess not really😭 sensors and wiring must’ve been really messed up
You have a lot of patience.
Man ! Engineers did a good job ! but the quality of putting the car together - of course not that great. Hop in a gallardo or Porsche.
I have definitely been looking at Porsche!
Rather, save a huge chunk of money and get a new GR Supra. It is still very rare, gets attention wherever I go, and is very reliable.
