  • This is from my last trip to visit the Shanghai Wushu Team in the spring of 2013. On the second day I let one of my cameras record the full training session and rather than cut it up into smaller pieces, I thought this "fly on the wall" look at the training might be a nice look at a mostly-typical wushu practice.
[NOTE: I recently came across a bunch of old wushu footage that I had never put up on Wushu Adventures (formerly WushuZilla) so I'll slowly be uploading some of it here in the coming weeks and months (when I have time ... whenever that is).]

Man these kinds of videos take me back. You can't find videos like this anymore nowadays. Wushu ASMR? 😂 Thanks for sharing!

Thanks! I had this one idea (a long time ago) of just sticking a camera in the corner of the top professional teams during a standard training and creating a library of these for people to use for inspiration, or just as a companion while they are training on their own. It is like those sounds of a coffee shop that people listen to when studying, except the sounds of a wushu guan you can listen to while training. :-) Maybe someday .... Back in 2013 a 45 minute video pretty much maxed out all my recording memory but these days memory for long videos isn't a problem. (Thanks technology!)

Yeah, i love stuff like this that just captures the feeling of a time and location. Sometimes editing is nice to compress the highlights, but I also like to feel like I'm a part of the experience. Glad you like it! :-)

This is some great footage! Excited to finish watching this so I can rewatch and really take in some of the techniques they’re doing.

Hey Mark!! Can I know who the spear guy in the red jacket + black pants, and the changquan guy in the red jacket grey pants are??? Theyre crushing it! Especially love the CQ guy's rhythm --- so sharp and smooth, and he just flieees across the floor. Great video! Thank you so much for posting!!

The red jacket black pants spear guy was new to me at the time so I didn't catch his name. The other guy was actually also in the St. Petersburg Shanghai Team video. His name is Liu XiaoLong. (see here: ua-cam.com/video/LsIolt_thq4/v-deo.html) He was getting over an injury at this time so he wasn't competing. I have some footage of him from December where he's teaching a girl how to use the broadsword correctly. I think I put that in a trailer, but I didn't put up the full footage of that yet. But yeah, he's quite good.

What type of cardio do the athletes do? Or do they get all their cardio from wushu?

I met them back in 2005 when I was living and training with them in Shanghai. So, I was able to visit and train with them when I was back in town in 2012/2013.
