It's weirdly funny to me that the youtuber can go between short skits and long book reviews without it being jarring to me
@@ManCarryingThing dance monkey make me laugh, I joke this excites me not enough book reviews on the site
Pls don’t stop making book videos I use these as recommendations after reading butchers crossing and blood meridian which were two of the most spectacular books I’ve ever read. I love and appreciate the book content. Never stop.
I can only second what other ppl have said. Your short skits are VERY funny but please,.please don’t stop making book videos. That was how I discovered you and those videos are always great.
I never read books, but for some reason these videos are still fun to watch
I started reading 2 years ago, best decision i ever made
So many great stories you won't find anything like them in another medium
@@HoneyBeeFlanzman you can have an audiobook on while you read it's so convenient
Wuthering Heights' atmosphere is one of my favorite parts about it. I love how the landscape of the moors and poor weather create a world where these characters would belong.
Could never get into it. Power to you. The characters just didn't grab me enough probably. Or felt relatable to me personally. But I heard good things about it.
These videos were the reason I started to get into reading. Thank you for continuing to post these.
Thank you for your concise recommendations, Jake. I read "The Road" for my high school English class, and once I got accustomed to the lack of punctuation, I was really hooked on the story, and genuinely wanted to know what would happen next. You really get a strong feel for the man and the boy's relationship.
Wuthering Heights was just absolutely astonishing to me, I read it just after I finished Jane Eyre and knew that it would be kinda different from that but it was such a complete switch right in front of me. One of my personal favorite elements is almost how the book makes you feel bad for wanting Heathcliff and Catherine to be dating in the first one. I've found that, in a meta way, it's almost like the writer is characterizing the reader's desire to have a nice and spontaneous romance as a malignant, driving entity that create the horrific and baffling scene that unfolds throughout the book. In a way, it's even criticizing other Gothic romances of the time, questioning their source and their influence in the real world.
See I absolutely loved loved Jane Eyre. But Wuthering Heights fell a little flat for me. I still don't know if I liked it.
So happy to hear you enjoyed Wuthering Heights! It's totally not a love story, which is what makes it so great. Really agree with what you said about the cycle of abuse. It's such a bleak book with the only beacon of hope being Hareton and Cathy II.
I’m so happy that Wuthering Heights was not only one of your favorites but your favorite favorite read of 2022! I re-read in December and fell in love with it all over again. I did a discussion with a couple of folks, wish I had realized you loved it so much (I’m behind on life) otherwise I would have invited you to join!
just want to say that from watching your videos i finally convinced myself to start reading. Its dumb but at 22 years old i have read maybe 2 fregular books start to finish in my life and have been consumed by the internet and other media. But I finally got round to reading a song of ice and fire and im finding it really easy to read. so silly but I was so surprised, i had convinced myself reading books was some daunting terrible task. Your videos are a main reason i started and im very grateful. Anyways, thanks a bunch man. Just wanted to say that.
i absolutely love your book videos, please don’t stop making them!!
Wuthering Heights is so unbelievably fantastic, I read it as a dark tragicomedy and boy oh boy does it work perfectly. 19th Century Always Sunny in Philidelphia
Man I will never get tired of your book-related content. Please keep doing more of it. I Actually picked up a decent amount of the books you've talked about from this year. Definitely gonna try Five Decembers next.
I've read Weathering heights a month ago... My favourite book of the year. Before I read it, I was expecting to be a boring love story, but nooo. I'm still shocked
Love your book videos! I'm looking forward to reading Five Decembers.
Thanks for the reccs! Will definitely check out The Expendable Man - I don't think I've ever been let down by a NYRB Classics publication. Finding an imprint/publisher series that you like (/trust!) is such an awesome way to get introduced to books you never would have picked up otherwise.
Just wanted to say that this (series?) has got me back into reading, and I can't thank you enough for that. In 2022 I read 8 books and started a 9th.
I don't personally see many youtubers making videos like this, and I think more should, because I think you're having a real positive impact on your viewers.
A session of Jake and Daniel Goblin opening packages would be surreal. Make it so guys!
Always nice to see your book videos, has helped me get a bunch of to read books that stare at me while I sleep (I will get to them I swear)
Five Decembers is such a fantastic read with had a lot of emotional impact for me. I read it after your first review and it remain my favorite book of 2022 (although Better Served Cold and The Wisdom of Crowds by Joe Abercrombie are close behind). Thanks for your amazing content and hope you enjoy yourself making it!🎉
I owe the same thanks you bestowed to Bao and leynes, I picked up Wuthering Heights because you talked about it so enthusiastically I finally got around to read the copy we had. Definitely one of the best novels I've ever read, I'm very glad I took the initiative.
I like the longer vids more than your skits even, it's clear you like your books and know a bit about them.
I love what Hard Case Crime does, reprinting old classics and new noir. Five Decembers was a real treat.
Every time I re-read wuthering heights it feels like I'm being repeatedly kicked in my stomach.
10/10, absolutely enthralling read.
you have the best application of sound effects on these videos, kind of a dork thing to point out, but you’re great at it. dig the long vids even though I can’t read.
that's nice of you to say because i do spend lots of time on that, lol. and dont worry about not reading its overrated
I love your book videos and you’re honestly my favourite book tuber. Your recs are always right up my alley
you know i mostly read fantasy but every now and again you recomend a crime book or something very obscure sounding and i think oh for sure im gonna pick that up. Thats how it went with butchers crossing and i think im gonna put five decembers on my tbr as well. As other people have commented before, never stop making these videos.
Been following your channel for about 2 years now, and I always add to my tbr when you put out one of these videos. This year I read a number of books you recommended. Off the top of my head, I read Black Wings has my Angel, a couple Manchette, The Hot Rock, some Elmore Leonard, and Five Decembers which had been sitting on my shelf. Your journey into crime coincided with my own (reading some Chandler and Cain, watching a bunch of film noir). These were among the best books I read this year. In a Lonely Place was also one of my favorites this year, so I’m looking forward to a future video on that.
Man Carrying Thing - and that thing is a book. I love these videos!
I love The Road. It was a very easy read because there aren't really any chapters. You can easily pick up and put down whenever you want. Very emotional and some of the lines have really stuck with me.
Holy shit a man carrrying thing video beyond 40 seconds we eating good tonight
I also read wuthering height for the first time recently. Everything you said was true.
i know i said this on twitter but i really do want to thank you for getting me into Faulkner. I just finished As I Lay Dying and it’s now one of my favorite books of all time, and i’m really enjoying the sound and the fury so far. his writing is so beautiful and complex and it’s like he’s writing a novel and a poem and a song all at once. thanks
I read Wuthering Heights too, partly because of your video. I too loved it, and initially I was shocked it was a bit of a ghost story. I also read Crime and Punishment which has now become one of my favourite books. I’d love to see you talk about it
Read Five Decembers on your recommendation a few months ago and it reignited my love for reading. Masterpiece
I was dnf for wuthering heights after getting about halfway through because I couldn't frame it in a way that made sense. Everything I read online about how to interpret it seemed, like you said, to focus on the romance element. Your review, however, makes me want to pick it back up and read it with the perspective you shared.
Thanks for a great 2022! My top five:
5. The Remains of the Day
4. A Thousand Splendid Suns
3. Piranesi
2. The Cabin at the End of the World
1. Blood Meridian (thank you for the recommendation!)
just finished the expendable man this morning, i added it to my reading list after seeing you mention it another video. great book!! same with hit man, great recommendations thanks man carrying thing
Thank you for recommending Five Decembers. Read it in 2 days, great combination of noir and WWII theme.
Never heard of 'the expendable man' - thanks for that. Love your book reviews
You're making me want to try Wuthering Heights again. I read it when I was 16 as required reading for my Literature A Level and despised it at the time for being utterly miserable and for the majority of the characters being utterly unlikeable, but now that I'm older and not being forced to read it I might find a new appreciation for it.
Yeeessss! Probably THE best booktuber out there. Love your stuff man.
Expendable man is such a fantastic book. Check out in a lonely place too! It’s fantastic
I also read Wuthering Heights for the first time last year! I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. And I agree this isn't a romance, it's gothic horror/dark fiction.
Five Decembers was one of the best book recommendations. Loved every bit of it -- kinda along the lines of Chandler and Ellroy. Thank you.
Looking back, this is the year that Crime Fiction grew on you. I remember in an early video you said that you didn't like crime fiction or mysteries. You seemed primarily into to Fantasy novels. Now, years later, these stories are a major part of each year's book wrap up. I particularly love the representation of Lawrence Block and Richard Stark on this channel.
Awesome! Going to check out Hit Man and The Road. Looking forward to reading them!
And congratulations on graduating college!
In a Lonely Place was a really cool read. You really get into the character's head. They changed a lot in the movie.
so cool that you actually bought books for this skit
Might add Wuthering Heights and Expendable Man to my TBR. You mentioned Butcher's Crossing a couple of times and that piqued my interest.
Also, I know you said you didn't read a lot of fantasy, and I want to thank you for that a little bit. Seeing your lists, I feel I'm going to get something outside what other book UA-camrs talk about (I see lots of pop fantasy and tiktok pop contemporary on channels), so seeing you talk about older books that need some love and genres that haven't hit oversaturation is, honestly, very refreshing.
Is there anyway you could do a reading related Q&A so we could see where you’re at with certain books, genres, series, etc.? I understand your content has shifted away from being mostly book related content but I think that could be a good way to keep engaged with subscribers interested in that content (love the skits and second channel btw). A couple questions I would ask is: where are you at with fantasy? Is this still a genre you’re interested in and if so, do you have any plans to finish The Dark Tower or The Wheel of Time? Thanks for the content and hope you have a wonderful 2023!
Oh, man, the combo between the word, "Hitman," and the name, "Block," really rung this vague, nebulous bell inside my head that I couldn't put my fingers on...until you mentioned that it's an influence for _Barry_ (the protagonist used Block as his stage name there, so that checks out). I was already sold on your recommendation anyway, but that definitely sealed it. Thanks!
I read the Mistborn Trilogy this past year and absolutely loved it.
I fell hard for crime this year too and discovered how good Jean-Patrick Manchette, Jim Thompson and Donald Ray Pollock are at the genre. Hope you make time to check em out.
Always excited for your vidoes. Keep up the good work!
Hey Jake, thanks for recommending "Five Decembers", it ended up being one of my best reads last year. By the way: I love that you have two (or more?) books on your shelf connected to Jean Renoir. I’ve read both of those as Renoir is my favourite film maker of all time. If you haven’t read it I strongly recommend checking out ”Renoir on Renoir”, an absolutely incredible compilation of interviews (conducted by Jacques Rivette!) with, and essays by, Renoir.
glad you enjoyed it! i'll check out that renoir book - im a huge fan of his, especially "the crime of m. lange" which for some reason has never been easy to find
If you haven't checked out McCarthy's All The Pretty Horses, you have to. It's genuinely breathtaking.
Wuthering Heights is at the top of my tbr, want to do a sort of horror/gothic deep dive this year. Always excited when a book video drops!
Best books I read last year were: Period (or just the entire George Miles Cycle) by Dennis Cooper, which, talk about disturbing
The Notebook Trilogy by Agota Kristof
Freedom by Jonathan Franzen
Amygdalatropolis by B.R. Yeager (favorite living writer, also very f***ed up)
I love the book videos. Thanks, man.
Hit Man was one if my favorites!
1) Lords of Discipline - Pat Conroy,
2) Lord of the Flies,
3) Of Mice and Men
I've read the Road, one of my favorites! I have Wuthering Heights and plan to read it this year!
Your videos got me to read Wuthering Heights and I loved it! On to Jane Eyre for the other Brontë :D
Was waiting for this. Keep the Booktube vids coming.
I’m not gonna lie, I subscribed to you because we have the same taste in books and I love your suggestion videos.
Thank you for recomending Wuthering Heights; I read it because of your video and it was such an amazing read.
Good video! Wuthering Heights has always been one of my favorites.
Just want to say I love your book videos. I feel like I have similar tastes to you, so I'm always able to find something new to read by checking out your channel. :)
Forty Lashes Less One, Butcher's Crossing and most recently Five Decembers have all been solid hits for me. Recently I tried The Poison Artist by the same author as Decembers, and liked it, but definitely not on the same level.
Right now I'm reading the Hunchback of Notre Dame after my partner got me a very nice copy, but after that I think I'll try Hitman. Thanks!
edit: And I see a First Law book on your shelf. Would love to see your opinion on the series. I love the middle, stand-alone novels so much.
Love your book videos. I hope you read more Terry Pratchett this year
Came for the funny skits, stayed for the books :)
You inspired me to start reading again, man! I haven't read a novel in over 10 years. But your channel inspired me to reengage. This weekend I bought Children of Time and Three Body Problem. I love science fiction so it's a good jump off point for me. Man, it just feels great to sink into a novel again. I'll be referencing this channel to build out a reading list 🔥
Went to my local library to get out one of the many books you’ve recommended and reviewed. They had absolutely none of them, so perusing the fiction section from A-B, I found Wuthering Heights. Very keen to be sad and depressed at the end of this legendary book!
all of these are going straight to my tbr list
Favorite books of the year: The Crossing by Cormac McCarthy, The Savage Detectives by Roberto Bolaño and Flow my Tears the Policeman Said by Philip K. Dick.
I've spent all of last year reading IT (stephen king) and im still not halfway 😭 Another book i started this year which I adore is Issac and the Egg (bobby palmer) which has so far been a heartbreaking depiction of grief which hits close to home and has a brilliant balance of sadness and humour. I haven't finished it yet but so far its been brilliant! Im a slow reader so I imagine I'm not finishing my reads anytime soon.
Bold move to have a best books of the year list be entirely Colleen Hoover books!!
Just finished The Road so I was happy to see it here. The journey is definitely brutal at times but I also found the ending to be surprisingly hopeful and affirming. I was surprised how caught up I got in the relationship between the father and son by the end given how sparse their interactions can be.
I'm so glad I discovered your book videos recently, I'm trying to read more this year. I'm going to start with The Mad and the Bad since I know it is a quick read. My most recent book that I have been recommending to everyone is John Langan's The Fisherman.
Terrortome was personally my favorite novel of 2022. It’s a hilarious Stephen King parody
Lawrence Block is an INCREDIBLE writer
Got into McCarthy's books this year and I don't think I'm ever going to get out of them. Also read a couple of Elmore Leonard books as per your recommendations, thank you for that! I recommend 2666, an enigmatic beast of a book that burrows itself deep in your unconscious.
Added almost all of these to my wishlist thanks!
I read five decembers after your initial review
Now one of my favourites
Thanks for the recommendation
I love this man. If he says these books are good then they are good, dammit
Congrats on graduating!
you should definitely read the invention of morel, it's your kind of thing and a masterpiece
My favorite book was probably Trust Exercise 😃😃 wholesome book, nothing out of the ordinary, certainly didn't feel sick during a few scenes.
And then after that some stock answers like Looking for Alaska, Tfios, and Zaregoto volumes 1-2
Checked out 5 Decembers after seeing this vid. Haven't slept much but finished it at 530 this morning. Great, great book.
Thanks for the recommendations. I have them on my list.
Last year I read the "Remembrance of Earth's Past" trilogy and the "Old Man's War" series. I haven't seen too many of your book videos as I'm more familiar with your comedy videos, so I'm not sure if you would like them but they are 2 great sci-fi series.
I always like your lit videos. You have good recs.
Everytime you post a book video its like Christmas! and I fucking hate Christmas. Thank for the list though. added some of them to tbr. love you!
I'm currently reading Shogun - James Clavell. It is blowing my mind.
Oh, forgot this channel was about books. Welcome back, man.
Five Decembers by James Kestrel
Hit Man by Lawrence Block
The Road by Cormac McCarthy
The Expendable Man by Dorothy B. Hughes
Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
Have you read any Octavia Butler? I recently got into her Patternist series and am curious if you would ever review her, especially considering we are experiencing a bit of a Butler renaissance with many of her works being adapted into series now
Mr. Man Carrying Thing, you should read The Persian Boy by Mary Renault. It's easily became my favourite novel.
It's usually an exaggeration when people say that they were hooked from the first page etc. but this book's first sentence is all you need to immediately feel drawn in.
The Hot Rock was probably one of the most entertaining books I read in '22. THANKS!
Love wathing your vidoes, really interesting and fun to see what you decide to read, definitely recommend readin Nomadland, a incredible book, where the writer tried the lifestyle herself

Ok man carrying youtube
Is Wuthering Heights better than Pride and Predudice? I'm reading P&P at the mo and really amn't into it. Should I push through?
I just finished Thomas Hardy's Far from the Madding Crowd, and loved it, so I've also a few more of his in the wings.
I'm always reading P. G. Wodehouse. Have got Rhythm of War on the go. The complete Sherlock Holmes. The complete H. P Lovecraft. And, Walden, by Henry David Thoreau, very apposite to me and my subsistence in this modern world. 'As if you could kill time without injuring eternity.'
